Fourteen
In the sky, the moon was blocked by a few hazy clouds making it look like a blurry glowing circle. The absence of the stars caused the sky to look like a pitch-black canvas. Below that, some leaves in the trees that aligned the street rustled as the wind blew through them. It didn't look like it was going to rain but the air was cold and nice tonight.
Along the same street, a couple stood by each other next a huge motorcycle.
"This was not what I had in mind." Taehyung looked down to the black helmet in his hands.
Next to him, Jeongguk was busy doing a brief examination of his black motorcycle that hadn't been used in a long time. Although the contraption still looked new and barely had a scratch on it.
The raven-head then got up from the squatting position that he was in as he was previously checking on the break pedals of the bike. He briefly dusted his hands on his jeans before approaching his hyung with a knowing smile.
"Why? When you suggested that we could do anything I want, did you think I was gonna make you put on fancy underwear and strip in front of me or something?"
"No!" Taehyung freaked out. "I-I wasn't thinking- no okay!" He tried his best to hide the smile on his face by turning his head to the side but his boyfriend saw right through him.
"Oh my- You were really thinking that, weren't you?" The raven-head shook his head, inching closer to the other until they were face to face. But Taehyung was still facing the side, cheeks now blazing bright red.
Luckily it was dark outside or him blushing would've been very obvious.
"Hey look at me."
With a sigh, he did as he was told.
Jeongguk had a small comforting smile on his face. "You don't have to be embarrassed..." He reached his gloved hand forward to take one of his hyung's hands in his. For a moment, Taehyung thought that the younger man was being understanding and saving him from the humiliation until...
"I don't blame you for having a dirty mind."
What?!
"What?!" Taehyung pulled his hand out of Jeongguk's hold and landed one hard hit on the man's chest.
Although his attack was barely acknowledged because by now the raven-head was laughing like crazy at the reaction he got out of Taehyung.
Dissatisfaction filled the older man as he watched his boyfriend take pleasure in his misconception. It's not his fault that he assumed wrongly.
Who knew that Jeongguk would've wanted to take him on a motorcycle ride instead of doing that other thing.
The brunet pouted at the laughs filling the air. "Stop it. I'm not the one with the dirty mind here."
"Oh really? So it's me then?"
"Yeah!" Taehyung exclaimed. He wanted to spill the dirty kink that the raven-head had adapted over the past week. The one memory, still hot on his mind was the other night when Jeongguk didn't allow him to uh- 'release himself' until told otherwise.
Apparently there was a name for it too. People called it 'edging' (yeah, he googled it).
So confidently...
"Remember the other night when you-" He abruptly stopped realizing what he was about to say. Gosh, this was so embarrassing...
And Taehyung knew it was a huge mistake bringing that night up because Jeongguk now had serious look on. His laughter had died down too.
"When I what, Sweetheart?"
A ticklish feeling exploded inside Taehyung's stomach.
"Nothing... I-"
The raven-head shook his head again. "No tell me." He nibbled on his bottom lip, raking his eyes over the brunet entirely.
"What did I do that was so dirty?"
Okay! Game over. He lost. The atmosphere between them was doing things to Taehyung and his eyes were slowly drifting to his boyfriend's lips again. Not again. If he gave in to his every crave to kiss the life out of Jeongguk tonight, they probably wouldn't make it to Jin's party at this rate.
Therefore, he quickly cleared his throat and walked away from Jeongguk's heated gaze to the side of the motorcycle there.
"So we're riding your bike to Jin's place huh?" He asked, obviously changing the subject.
A chuckle sounded behind him and he knew Jeongguk was smiling at his flustered state. The brunet watched the younger man move closer to the bike and a second later the loud roar of an engine coming alive sounded with a single headlight shooting out into the dark night.
Jeongguk turned towards Taehyung, taking the helmet the other was holding before lifting it over his hyung's head. He connected the buckles at the ends of the helmet straps with a 'click'.
His eyes then trailed up to see that Taehyung was looking at him. With a smile, he let his thumb graze the other's cheek. "I actually want to take you somewhere first."
"Okay." The brunet replied in no time.
In the next two minutes, they were both properly seated on the bike. In front, Jeongguk adjusted the side mirrors after having put on his own helmet. He smiled to himself upon seeing Taehyung behind him closing his eyes as it looked like he was giving himself a pep-talk to be brave.
That was exactly what the older man was doing. But we can't possibly blame him. It's been so long since he last got on this motorcycle. He was a little scared but his fearful thoughts vanished the second he felt his hands being grabbed and soon his arms being placed around the waist in front of him.
As his fingers interlocked together in front of the raven-head's stomach, Taehyung found a pair of dark eyes looking at him. "Don't worry, I won't let you get hurt."
Those words were sweet and assuring. It distracted the brown-haired male and as the bike had started moving already, there wasn't a single trace of fear left inside him. He hugged the raven-head tighter as they zoomed down the street under the streetlights.
It felt like they were running away together; from everyone else, from their jobs, from all the negativity and pain in their lives. With him hugging Jeongguk like that, added with the wonderful night breeze pushing against them, a tremendous amount of emotions bubbled inside Taehyung.
He just loved this feeling. The secureness... the safety... the feeling of being taken cared of by another person.
There weren't that many cars out tonight. And as Jeongguk rode the bike down a route he seemed to be familiar with, the number of vehicles drastically filtered down to just about zero. Soon, the two of them were the only ones riding down that road.
Taehyung only opened his eyes when he noticed the bike had stopped moving. He glanced around to their foreign surroundings, detaching his hands from around the man in front of him. Instinctively he removed his helmet and now he could clearly see where they were.
They were at the top of a cliff that gave a full view to the empty night sky.
"Come on." Jeongguk's voice brought his attention away from the sky and he saw that the other had dismounted the bike.
So he got off too with help from the raven-head who took his hand right away, leading him to the edge of the cliff. There were some poorly-constructed railings there and one part of it was completely broken which led Taehyung to believe that someone had actually rode their car or bike off this cliff before.
He didn't quite get why Jeongguk had brought him here and didn't bother to ask yet. With his hand still warmly wrapped by another, he was led to one side of the cliff. They stood at a safe distance from the edge of course but it was just enough for their eyes to take in the breathtaking view down there.
A subtle gasp left Taehyung as his honey-brown eyes scanned over the beautiful city lights that adorned the irregular buildings down there. From the height they were standing at, the lights were projected as tiny circular spots that came in white, purple, red and green.
This brought Taehyung back to when he was a little boy and every time he rode in the car with his parents at night, he'd squint his eyes so much until the traffic and street lights looked like blurry spots of light.
It was hard to take his eyes off the scenery there. Although there weren't any stars out tonight, right now there were a thousand 'stars' in his eyes. It felt like there was a whole different world down there. And with the refreshing night breeze blowing their way, Taehyung was waiting for the wind to sweep him and Jeongguk off their feet and bring them to this magical new world.
Taehyung was too entranced with what was down there to realize that Jeongguk had let go of his hand and now stood behind him. He snapped out of his thoughts when a warm chest pressed up against his back. Two arms came over his upper body keeping his hands glued to his sides.
A smile took over his face as he turned to the side to see the raven-head looking out into the view with his chin resting atop his hyung's shoulder.
"Where are we?" He asked.
Jeongguk's eyes moved to him. "Neverland."
"I'm serious."
"And I'm being serious too."
Taehyung turned back to the view before them. He liked it actually. Standing there, cheating his mind into believing that Neverland was right down there. He couldn't keep track of the number of times he'd wish to walk into the TV whenever Peter Pan was playing on it when he was a child.
Fairies, lost boys, pirates, mermaids; that movie is a masterpiece.
"Do you see that single road down there, leading out of the city?" The younger man pointed out to the said road.
The brunet hummed in response as he saw it.
"Someday I want to take you down that road where it's just the two of us alone. Away from everything else." Jeongguk said the last part softly.
Taehyung was smiling so much now. "Is that why you brought me here?"
Instead of getting an answer right away, about fifteen seconds passed before-
"Remember a year ago when you told me about the future you wanted?" Jeongguk spoke out, causing Taehyung's brows to knit together. "Working in a huge publishing firm, small apartment, pet dog and all that?"
He still remembers?
The distant memory of the two of them in that ice-cream parlor in Itaewon entered Taehyung's mind and he turned around to face the raven-head. There was a little space between them. "I remember." He said, studying the now conflicted look consuming his boyfriend's face.
"Do you still wish for that?"
The raven-head refused to meet his hyung's gaze.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm asking if you still see yourself living that life in the future."
What- "Of course not." Taehyung took a step closer. He watched Jeongguk's head lift up with a slightly surprised expression on his face.
"Really? Because I think about it all the time. The life you could be heading towards right now... if you weren't here with me." There was a pinch of fear and sadness that laced these words.
Taehyung was shocked by what the other was saying. "How could you even think that?" He didn't know where to begin; to explain that he was happy with the way their lives were right now.
"Jeongguk I-" He sighed and took the raven-head's hand in his. "That future that I wanted before this... it's completely gone, it's been gone for the longest time now." He pulled his lips into a smile. "I don't know how to express this even more but I'm so happy with my life right now. Ever since we got back here, I realized one thing. And it's that I don't care about my job, or about getting that dream apartment that I wanted or anything else..."
He moved closer to Jeongguk. "I only want to be with you."
Wide eyes that were filled with emotion stared back at Taehyung. "You- really?"
"Of course. You've given me so much more than I could've asked for. I can't imagine my future without you. There's only you Jeongguk. Only you in my life."
There was something bothering the younger man. His eyes glistened as his hyung said those words. This troubled Taehyung. What Jeongguk just said about his future... did this have any relation to how he'd been acting different over these past few weeks. Was he scared that Taehyung was going to leave him or something?
"I love you for saying all this..." He pulled his hand out from Taehyung's grip and placed it over the man's hand instead. "...but I don't want this to be your life even if you say you're happy. I want to give you the best possible life-"
"Jeongguk-"
"No hyung. I'll get us out of here."
A serious atmosphere overcame their surroundings and Taehyung couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Why do you want to leave here so badly?" The words slipped out before he could stop it. Concern filled him when he noticed how Jeongguk seemed to be deep in thought as he lately replied the question.
"I can't-" His voice cracked a little. "Will you just wait for me?" He moved his hands to either sides of Taehyung's waist pulling the other closer. The tips of their noses almost touched.
"Promise me that you'll wait for the day I get us out of here."
Honestly speaking, at that moment, the brunet was feeling apprehensive. He didn't like the way Jeongguk was talking. It seemed like Jeongguk was scared and that made Taehyung feel scared too. Over the past year, he'd gotten so used to seeing the younger man always firm like a rock while he was the emotional mess in their relationship.
But now thinking about it, there were those times during their college days when it was Jeongguk who cried; where it was him who was the vulnerable mess. Taehyung hated himself for forgetting that Jeongguk was also human. He had emotions too.
And so the brunet decided right then, whatever it was that Jeongguk seemed to be going through right now, that was causing him to act this way... Taehyung would stand by his side.
He wrapped his arms around the raven-head's neck and with a smile, "I promise."
When Jeongguk smiled back, something invaded Taehyung's thoughts; something that told him the argument they had the other day was just the start.
He felt it before and he was feeling it now again.
Something was going to happen.
This frightened him so much but right now, he needed to be strong for the both of them.
Right now, all he could do was be ready.
