Chapter 24
It wasn't enough that she hardly got any sleep last night but to see Ajay standing in front of her now truly dampened her mood.
"So how's it going with the dress Gauri? Need any help?"
"It's fine. Aren't you busy trying to find the right model for my dress?"
She could sense Ajay following behind her closely as she walks towards the coffee counter.
"That is the very reason I waited for you here. I wanted to talk about the dress to see who would be perfect for it."
This time around Gauri didn't feel that Ajay was trying to find a reason to get close to her but in fact he seem to be very serious. "It must have been the Boss's words the other day that had made an impact." Gauri thought to herself. But then again she had to remind herself that he could have waited till the office hours where they would be in a working environment instead of waiting here in this very coffee shop.
"I think it's best for me to finish the dress so that you can see it in person. I think only then will you be able to picture the perfect model for it. I mean it's pointless to describe it when you also have a copy of the design."
Grabbing her cup of hot coffee Gauri heads towards a table next to the window like always but every time her peace and quiet was interrupted by Ajay she couldn't help but frown as she sips on her cup.
"Don't forget about tomorrow Gauri. How about I pick you up. We are going to dinner first at an italian restaurant. How does 5 sound?"
Ajay really didn't care about finding a model for this commercial since he had so many beautiful models on his contact list. All he really wanted was to make sure that Gauri still remembered about the get together tomorrow.
"Thanks but I have a ride. Just let me know which restaurant and I will be there with my friend at 5."
"Oh...I forgot you were bringing a friend. Do you mind telling me who?" asked a curious Ajay.
"Does it matter?" Gauri coldly replied.
Scratching the back of his head in embarrassment Ajay did not want to seem like such a busy body. "Of course not. The more the merrier." The last thing he wanted was to be on Gauri's bad side just a day before tomorrow. This was going to be his chance to get closer to her and maybe with a couple of drinks Gauri would be able to relax around him. Just the thought of her in his arms on the dance floor was enough to make his mind run wild.
"Well it's time. I'll see you at work."
Gauri saw Ajay snap out of his trance as he almost tumbled out of his chair but what was odd was instead of following her towards the door he just waved goodbye.
"I'll catch up with you later." said a nervous Ajay.
He waited till she left the coffee shop to shift to the corner so that no one could see his excited "little brother." "Shit..I really need to stop fantasizing in broad day light." Ajay laughed at himself inwardly.
Gauri on the other hand felt relieved that she at least will have a peaceful walk to the company until she heard Ishana call out to her.
"Gauri! Gauri wait up." yelled Ishana.
When Gauri turned around she was a bit surprise to see what Ishana was wearing to work. Of course they work for a fashion company but it didn't take much to shift from classy to trashy and here Ishana had shifted. With her sleeveless light pink chiffon shirt and a low cut neckline that showcased her pushed up breasts and a tight white skirt that was too short for comfort. Not to mention the 4 inch pink heels that looked very painful to wear.
"Morning Ms. Patel." greeted Gauri.
"Come on. We are co-workers now. Just call me Ishana. I'll feel weird if I'd have to call you Ms. Sharma." Joked Ishana.
Gauri didn't want to argue on such a small matter so she just smiled and nodded as she turned around to head towards work with Ishana walking side by side.
"Are you excited for tomorrow? Because I am! I can't wait to pick out what to wear. Maybe we should go shopping after work today Gauri."
"I have enough clothes. Besides I will be working late today."
"Oh yes. I forgot to congratulate you. I heard your design got picked to be the face of the Old and Classy campaign. I can't believe your dress will be featured in a commercial. Do you need any help? I can stay and make the dress with you."
When Ishana first caught wind of Gauri's big opportunity she was filled with jealousy. She couldn't understand how Gauri could get such recognition when she herself entered the company at the same time. Even worse was that she had an actual degree whereas Gauri was just a small town girl. The worst was during lunch time when everyone was talking about it in the canteen where Gauri was always absent from. Though she hated listening to it she had to admit she was glad to bump into Riddhima who had the same feelings regarding Gauri.
Flashback in the canteen
Ishana who was sitting alone after a boring day being Svetlana's assistant saw Riddhima suddenly sit in front of her.
Riddhima: So how's your day going? Getting use to it?
Ishana: It's okay but Ms. Kapoor seems to not trust me. She hardly lets me do anything without supervision. She practically rejects all of my designs. Gauri is so lucky. I wish I was working for Ms. Jhanvi instead.
Riddhima had a smirk on her face as she hears Ishana's complaints. "She's your friend right? Why don't you offer her help to work on the dress together. Then you both can gain credit for it."
Riddhima could see the big smile on Ishana's face.
"You think so? I am pretty free. I will ask her tomorrow."
So when Ishana saw Gauri walking this morning she hurriedly tried to catch up.
"No. It's my design so I want to work on it myself." Gauri coldly replied.
"But...you are on a time crunch. The more people to help the faster you can get it done. If you fail at this task you will probably not get another big project again Gauri."
The more Ishana pressed on the matter the more Gauri was annoyed. She didn't like to be forced when she had clearly stated that she needed no help.
"With more people working on a design that I created would only result in mistakes that would take more time to correct. I thank you for your concerns but if I have any problems Ms. Jhanvi has told me to come to her."
There was only a few more steps till they would reach the entrance doors so Gauri made an effort to sprint in order to shake Ishana off her tail but because of her lack of experience of wearing heels Gauri's footing lost balance. As she was about to brace herself for the hard impact of the company's clean floor Gauri felt someone grab hold of her waist.
"Be careful Ms. Sharma. You are still considered early for work."
His voice was hard not to recognize so Gauri immediately stood up firmly as she took a step back.
"Morning Boss. And thank you."
Today he was wearing a black blazer with a navy blue button shirt but what stood out today was his silver cuff links and earrings that caught her eyes today.
"Morning."
Ishana: Morning Boss!
"Morning Ms. Patel."
Ishana was delighted to see her Boss stop and talk to them but when she wanted to say more he had already turned around to enter into his private elevator.
Khanna who at first was on edge seeing his Boss enter the car to change out of his get up this morning was lucky to see a big smile in his rear view mirror.
"Boss you seem to be in a better mood this morning."
Omkara could not help it when the woman he has set his sights on asked him to pick her from work every night. On top of that he would be getting her personally made lunchbox to boot.
"You are lucky that I am in a good mood Khanna. Don't think I have forgotten about yesterday's incident."
"Sorry Boss. Never again. Just tell me how you want to woo Ms. Sharma and I will give it 100%."
When he saw his Boss's expression turn sour Khanna was confused as to why.
"Did I say something wrong Boss?"
"The only person needed to put in effort is me. There is no such thing as you and Ms. Sharma."
After that line Khanna knew that his days ahead would be like walking on glass. His Boss was so possessive to the point of being unreasonable. Not only does he have to keep Ms. Sharma safe but he also has to make sure not to say his name and link it with hers in one sentence.
Even now as they stood inside the elevator he was afraid to breathe loud and disrupt his Boss's good mood. Suddenly Omkara felt his phone vibrate as the doors to the elevator opened.
"Khanna order lunch for the entire designing department today." instructed Omkara.
"Anything in particular?"
"She prefers to eat something light for lunch. Run with that."
Although his Boss's words seems indifferent but Khanna knew that if he messed this up his life would surely end. This task was harder than any task given because if he picked something Gauri didn't eat his Boss's evil eye would emerge to suck the life out of him.
"Yes Boss."
Sitting down at his desk to check his message from Rudra Omkara couldn't wait to brag.
Text
Rudra: You better remember what we talked about last night Om! You do not want me to compete with you when it comes to women! No more taking Gauri home!
Omkara: Sorry. Gauri asked me to take her home every night.
Rudra: What?! You are lying. There is no way.
Omkara: On top of that I will be getting a lunchbox made out of love everyday.
Rudra: Okay now I know you are lying. This is just sad Om. I will help you court Gauri. No need to makeup stories buddy.
Omkara: Why don't you wait at the house tonight and you will see.
Rudra: Psh. You think I won't? Just watch! I will make sure you won't be taking her home.
After reading all of Omkara's text Rudra quickly text Bhavya whom he was supposedly still mad at.
Rudra: Bhavya. Text Gauri and say I will take her home tonight.
Bhavya: Oh. No need. Gauri texted me earlier and said she has a ride home. Stop texting me when I'm at work!
Rudra: What?!
There was no way the Gauri that he knew for a few days would allow a big business tycoon like Omkara Oberoi to take her home every night. Rudra was sure something was up and he was going to make sure to stand by Bhavya's window tonight to see for himself.
"Omkara is not that good to be able to get a woman like Gauri." Rudra assured himself.
"Even I am not that good! Wait...maybe I should take Bhavya out for a late snack so she wont bump into him!" Grabbing both sides of his head Rudra twisted and turned in his bed as he struggled with what he really wanted to do tonight.
As for Omkara he made sure that his schedule was free of meetings for today. Opening his laptop to double click on the room filled with fabric he could see her diligently working on her dress.
"Even though you had a hard time yesterday I am sure it will make you stronger." Omkara thought to himself.
Omkara wasn't oblivious to the things going on in the work place but he believed that a place without competition or a ladder to climb would result in subpar results. For Gauri to want to work in his company she had to learn to survive without him having to intervene. Zooming in to see Gauri's happy expression Omkara knew his decision was right.
"I can't wait for tomorrow."
