"I know it's hard to believe, Detective Song, but I swear...I swear to you that I am telling you the truth. In fact, I would like to show you something. I hope that once you see this your opinion on what I'm saying will change." Jimin sighed tiredly, lifting himself off from his seat a little so he could carefully pull out the envelope resting in his back pocket. He turned to Detective Song, trying to give him a small smile that eventually just went flat. He politely offered the envelope for the detective to take, who immediately snatched the thing from Jimin's hands. Detective Song eyed Jimin with a bit of a glare before pulling out the folded letter in the envelope and reading the contents out loud.
To my dear son,
Hello, Jimin-ah, it's eomma. If you are reading this letter then that means that something terribly bad has happened to me or I am being dramatic. Please forgive this old fool but I didn't want to worry you. You see...I've been getting frequent visits from a demon since mid-December. Not just any demon, but the one attached to Chaeyoung. I don't know what it is after but I know it can't be any good.
It all started with dead rats in the morning, unattached breathing tubes, and mixed dosages in my IV. The hospital believes my designated nurse was being careless but I know that's not the case. She has never done anything wrong.
I could sense the room getting heavy and it was harder for me to breathe, which only meant a certain something was visiting. It only appears in the shadows and never attempts to communicate with me. I can just feel it staring at me from the corner of the room, hearing how heavy it breathes and a chuckle every once in a while.
Jimin-ah, I won't lie and say I'm not afraid but I don't have enough time on earth left anyway.
I feel like there are still so many things that I have left to tell you. I don't know if I'm being dramatic or not but just in case, I wanted to tell you I love you one last time. I love you so very much and I'm happy I was able to raise such a loving, caring, brave, and handsome young man. I really hope it's just a bit of games and the demon goes away but if not then just know that I'm sorry I didn't say anything sooner and that I love you. In any case, it's not up to us to prevent things that are meant to happen anyway. I knew I would die the moment I made that deal with the demon a long time ago and your father was the first to go.
I just want you to live a life full of joy and laughter. There will be hardships and you will or are crying while reading this but it's not the end of the world, Jimin-ah. You have a beautiful young girl out there that needs your help. Her fate isn't sealed yet and only you hold the key of saving her. As I mentioned before, I told you that you can astral project, correct? Use that to your advantage. There will come a time when you will need to access the spirit world to bring her back.
Now, I'm running out of space, yet there is still so much to be said but this is just a 'what if' letter anyways. In the case that I'm alright then you'll never see this letter and I'll tell you everything in person. If not, then once again please forgive me and I love you very much, my sweet boy. Eomma loves you with all her heart and I hope that when your ability is awakened and you feel like you are suffocating, you can remember that you are not alone. Speak with your friends and they will help you get through it. I wish I could have been the one to teach you but now I'm rambling and running out of time. Goodbye, Jimin-ah~
With much love,
Eomma
After finishing the letter, Detective Song let out a long sigh, gripping onto the edges of the paper tightly. He wasn't sure what to think at the moment. All he knew was that his body was acting out to old memories his mind was bringing up. He began to breathe heavily, images of his wife telling him about something staring at her from the corners of the room. Something large and dark that would follow her everywhere she went. He recalled the way he pushed her away, telling her he didn't have time for games because he had a job to do. His wife would suffer from horrible nightmares and she became increasingly more paranoid, even to the point of not wanting to sleep at night. She would beg for him to stay with her but he never listened to her and would go to work instead. Little by little, he was losing his wife to something but by the time he realized what was happening, it was too late.
He shook his head, body trembling as the CCTV footage of his wife bashing her head against the wall with a haunting smile plagued his mind. No, not again. He looked up to find Jimin staring at him with a saddened expression on his face. "I-I'm not sure what you are thinking but I just want you to know that I'm not taking any of this as a game. Eomma was being assaulted and I had no way of helping her. She knew what was coming and I couldn't do anything to stop it...." Jimin began to silently cry as he stared at the man's stoic expression. "P-please, if you don't believe my words then at least trust eomma...I-I need your support...no...we all need your support. So much has happened and we are losing hope fast. We need help. We need to find Chaeyoung and help stop everything. If we don't do anything then she will die and so will many other people in the process..." Jimin bit his bottom lip and lowered his head to gaze down at the table's surface.
"Get out of my sight this instant." Jimin flinched at the roughness in the older man's voice. He instantly raised his head, body trembling and eyes wide as he stared at the male. "S-sir, please. W-we need your help. Chaeyoung is still missing so if anything...at least help find her. That's your job isn't it? Find her and we'll do the rest, but all we need is y-" "I SAID GET OUT OF MY SIGHT! LEAVE, DAMMIT!" Jimin kept his eyes glued on the detective who was currently rubbing his temples in frustration.
He didn't mutter another word before he got up from his seat and turned around to leave the room. He placed his shaky hand on the doorknob, turning around to glance at Detective Song who was holding his face in his hands while leaning against the table. "Just know that we still have faith in you. If you have any faith in us at all then please...please pull through and help us. Please help bring back Park Chaeyoung so we can save her. S-she might be running out of time." With his final words said, Jimin left the room, running into the arms of a worried Jin who was sat in the waiting room along with Seulgi and Jungkook.
Detective Song was left speechless, he gnawed the inside of his cheek, ripping at the skin to calm himself down. So many thoughts were swimming through is head until a clear image of Chaeyoung replaced everything else. He gulped down the knot that had formed in his throat, rubbing his sweaty palms on his pants repeatedly. An image of his deceased wife appeared in his mind along with a distant memory.
(A/N: This is what Detective Song looks like. The actor's name is actually Song Seungheon.)
"Areum!" Song Seungheon turned to look at his wife in horror. "W-what happened?! Where did you go?! W-what did you...what did you do?..." His voice was barely above a whisper as if he didn't have the energy to speak despite all the blood rushing through his body and the rapid beating of his heart. Areum looked at both males standing before her, one completely speechless while the other had just questioned her. She tilted her head in a child-like manner, making a cute pout with her blood-stained lips.
She swang the butcher knife in her hand while humming a happy tune. "Areum didn't do anything wrong, honey. Areum is a good girl who followed instructions. They were bad people...they were bad people so they had to go. Areum did it for you. Areum is making your job easier by getting rid of bad people. The woman said so. She said you would be proud...you are proud of me aren't you, honey?" She looked at her husband, stretching her arms out as if waiting for the older man to hug her. She frowned when both males looked at her in disbelief, feeling even more disconcerted by the fact that she was referring to herself in the third person.
Areum turned to look at the man next to her husband and pouted at him too. "Oppa...you are proud of me....aren't you?" she tilted her head as she spoke voice becoming distorted as if she were glitching. After a moment of silence, she huffed in annoyance and pulled the bag she was wearing on her body to the front. She stuck her hand in, rummaging for a while before she smiled brightly when she finally found what she was looking for. "I know! I brought oppa and honey a present for being so good to Areum! You'll love this.!" Seungheon's eyes immediately widened and he could feel his stomach churn in disgust.
He turned to his side seeing his brother-in-law as well as work partner with the same disgusted expression. "D-Dongwook-ah...t-those are...those are eyes." he whispered weakly, glancing back to look at the contents of the clear jar his dear wife was proudly holding up. "H-hyung..." Dongwook tried to speak but was interrupted by the sound of glass shattering by their feet. Both males looked down, the feeling of nausea taking over them as they saw eyes of various sizes splattered around their feet. Seungheon moved back but his foot came in contact with something squishy and he couldn't help but throw up.
Areum was watching them with an angered expression, visibly upset that both males hadn't appreciated their gift like the woman had told her they would. "YOU LIED TO ME!" she suddenly yelled, looking around as if trying to locate the person her anger was directed towards. Seungheon and Dongwook looked up at her after they stopped vomiting. "A-Areum come here. Y-you need to get cleaned up and we need to go somewhere far away." Dongwook said, earning a look of surprise from Seungheon. "H-hyung...she's not aware of what she did. We...we need to help her." Seungheon nodded at Dongwook's words, carefully walking around the eyes on the ground to get to his distressed wife.
"NO! AREUM IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE!" she screeched, swinging her knife around carelessly. "SHE PROMISED AREUM YOU WOULD BE HAPPY! SHE SAID YOU WOULD BE PROUD! SHE SAID IF I LET HER CONTROL MY BODY AND LISTENED WELL THEN YOU WOULD BE HAPPY!" Areum threw herself to the ground, crying her eyes out before breaking into a shrieking fit. Seungheon was careful when he approached his wife, making sure the knife was far away. He could feel himself crying as he clutched the smaller figure close to his body. He could feel all the blood that covered his wife's beautiful baby blue nightgown transfer a bit onto his own clothes as he calmed her down. How had things ended this way? What happened that made her turn like this? He should have paid more attention. He should have listened to his wife instead of ignoring her. What was he supposed to do now?
He was a detective who had a wife that had committed murder and now he wanted to help her get away with it. His thoughts were cut short when he heard the panicked shouts of Lee Dongwook. He came back into the real world, heart practically beating out of his chest when he saw police lights approaching their once peaceful neighborhood. He could hear the deafening sirens and he could see the blinding lights. His mind was rushing a million miles per second but his body was still.
He wasn't aware of when it happened, but his wife had been ripped out of his arms and he had been tackled to the ground. Dongwook had been held back by some police officers and his wife was being dragged away. All he could see was his wife suddenly lean back in a way that looked as if her back had snapped in half. She smiled at him wickedly, licking her chapped lips and flashing her blood-stained teeth. "You'll protect me, won't you? I'm innocent, honey. She made me do it. Areum is a good girl. It wasn't me. It was her...it was the demon..."
Detective Song snapped out of his thoughts, goosebumps appearing on his skin as he recalled the last haunting words his wife spoke to him before getting locked and taking her own life. He looked down at his paled hands resting on the wooden table. His whole body was tense and he could feel the strong trembling every once in a while. He gripped the table tightly, trying to stop his body from shaking. "It wasn't me. It was her...it was the demon..." The demon... He was never the kind of person that had ever believed in that sort of stuff. He didn't care about any proof people thought they had in order to prove the existence of the paranormal and demonic entities. He always believed that was a load of crap. He only believed that people used that as an excuse to land themselves in an insane asylum rather than serve time in prison.
There was no way someone would go from being innocent to a murderer without showing some sort of signals beforehand. However, his wife had become that person. He knew his wife. His wife wasn't a murderer. His wife would cry if he even attempted to kill a fly. After what had happened with his wife, he had done some research and had seen a multiple of cases of the same thing. How a person suddenly changed until they murdered someone or killed themselves. There was no way on earth that his wife was a murderer...yet she did kill. Even though it was something he had never believed no matter how many times he had heard it, he had no other choice than to believe that the reason his wife did what she did was in fact because of a demon. Nothing else could explain why she killed a whole family and stored their eyes in a little jar to gift to him and to her brother, Lee Dongwook.
Lee Dongwook. Ever since they viewed the CCTV footage of Areum bashing her head together, he hadn't seen or heard from that man again. Lee Dongwook resigned that day and left the agency never to be seen or heard from again. Detective Song tried to get in contact with him but it was as if Dongwook had disappeared. The man didn't even attend Areum's memorial service after the investigation was over. The detective sighed, lowering his head to rest it on the table's surface. It had been a long time since he had last seen Dongwook so seeing him so suddenly was a surprise. Why did he show up so suddenly? What has been doing until now? What is his connection to Park Chaeyoung and why was he with her? he asked himself, his head gaining a dull headache from overthinking. He let out a frustrated groan and lightly banged his head against the table before sitting up straight.
"Just know that we still have faith in you. If you have any faith in us at all then please...please pull through and help us. Please help bring back Park Chaeyoung so we can save her. S-she might be running out of time." He recalled Jimin's words and let out another sigh. He shook his head, standing up and grabbing the letter on the desk before exiting out of the room. As soon as he made his way out, he was met with three young pairs of eyes; four pairs to be exact. Jimin, Jin, Seulgi, and Jungkook all looked his way when they heard the door. Jimin had calmed down significantly and although he wanted to be hopeful, he lowered his head instead when the older man looked away.
Jin and Seulgi attempted to cheer Jimin up by giving him small smiles but it was hard for them to do considering they felt just as upset. All of them were so preoccupied that they all flinched when Detective Song's deep voice filled the quiet atmosphere. "Officer Choi, I want you to look into Lee Dongwook. Find out what he's been up to, where he's staying at, and what he has to do with Park Chaeyoung. Send a team to go look for him, I want him here in my office by tomorrow afternoon." He began to spit out some more order before he approached the group located in the waiting room.
All eyes looked up at him, keeping silent as they were afraid of him yelling at them if they spoke. Detective Song set his eyes on Park Jimin, making the poor boy gulp in fear. He just shook his head and chuckled, stretching out a hand for Jimin to take. Jimin looked down at the hand for a minute before warily taking it. "I never give up on a case no matter how hard it is, Park Jimin. I promise I will do everything in my power to find Park Chaeyoung and to bring her back. Something is telling me we will find her soon. Just be patient and keep your faith in me as you have been doing so far."
Jimin's eyes widened and a smile slowly appeared on his lips. He still wasn't sure if the detective had believed him at all but he was just glad that he hadn't given up on looking for Chaeyoung. They could only do so much so they needed all the help they could get. The detective shook his hand and Jimin gladly returned the gesture. "Thank you, Detective Song. Really, thank you from all of us. We'll keep our faith in you." The man shook the others' hands before giving Jimin his letter back and then returning to his office after dismissing them.
Jin patted Jimin on the back and then sent a wink towards Jungkook's direction. It was a bit of a challenge but they were slowly taking some steps towards locating Chaeyoung and bringing her back. They were relieved that things would be going a lot smoother now, but a part of them was still afraid. What was happening to Chaeyoung now? Jimin had described Chaeyoung's appearance and they were worried. They just hoped Park Chaeyoung would wait for them. They were slow but they were moving. All they needed was a little more time. They had to be hopeful. They would bring Chaeyoung back no matter what.
