chapter seven
As I smile at Max, I hear a commotion from behind me. I turn around. It's Lily's ex-boyfriend, Brad, and Audrey. Audrey is pulling Brad behind her. When she finally reaches me and Max on the dance floor, she gets all up in my face. "What do you think you're doing dancing in my spot?" she asks very loudly.
"That was the last song of the night. You could have been here literally 2 hours ago," Max says a little frustrated.
"Whatever, you're just a loser hanging out with the mute girl," she says pathetically.
This is enough to fuel Max. He starts taking deep breaths. Luckily for us, my sister, along with Zach, is just in earshot of this and start coming in our defense.
"Audrey, leave my sister alone." Lily says to her, accenting every word in the sentence.
"THIS is your sister? I guess the apple just gets more and more rotten as it goes down the tree" she replies rudely then steps back a second to observe Lily and me. "Hmm I guess I do see a resemblance now that I actually look at the two of you."
"And since you're the ugly little thing Brad dumped for me," Audrey continues, "you know why I'm here. Or have you forgotten that Brad always takes his girlfriend to dance right in the middle of the dance floor?"
Lily just smirks at her. "I broke up with Brad. And I would suggest NOT to believe any other lies Brad tells you." Lily says.
"Whatever. You're just as defective as your sister. Now tell her to get out of the way."
"No I don't think so. I'm not going to allow you to make my sister move. She was here first fair and square," she states.
Audrey lunged at Lily and starts a sissy fight. Max and I look at each other and take a step back.
"Hey what on earth is going on here? Stop fighting like kindergartners," A voice from behind me says.
The two girls separate and begin talking at once.
"This is a dance and you're suppose to have fun at these, not fight over whatever you were fighting about," Zach starts, "Now one of you explain to me what happened."
"Why does this matter to you, camera geek?" Audrey asks meanly.
"She! Was being a sassy pants to Rose and Max. More so Rose than Max, but still Max, too" Lily shouts on the verge of tears.
"Woah," Audrey starts mid-laugh, "not only does she look like a kindergartner, but she acts like one too. Do we need to send you back to Kindergarten?" she asks Lily like she would a young child.
"Stop talking to my friends like this," Zach says, then he got a smug look on his face, "or do I need to tell Brad here what happened just yesterday between us?" he asks smugly
Audrey's face immediately becomes horrified. "You wouldn't," she says through gritted teeth.
Brad looks over at Audrey with a confused look on his face.
"Oh, I would. Right here. Right now. This can be our little secret if you just go on and leave me and my friends alone."
Zach and Audrey have a stare off contest until her eyes start to water and so she says, "Come on, Brad, why are we wasting our time here? The dance is over. Lets go get food." The two of them walk away to leave.
What happened yesterday? I wonder.
As the two of them leave, Lily has calmed down and speaks up, "Sorry guys I hope she wasn't too much of a jerk. She's one of the most popular girls in my class," she says apologetically.
Its fine. It's nothing I am new to anyways.
"Anyone up for some IHOP? We didn't eat before the dance," Lily asks after reading my text.
Everyone agrees and we start heading towards the doors to leave.
"Wait, before we leave, I'm going to are if the girls I came with want to join us," Lily says.
Did she leave her group to hang out with Zach? This is getting really weird, really fast, I think to myself.
A few minutes later, Lily tells us that she and her friends are going to meet us at IHOP.
Zach, Max, and I head out towards Zach's car. Max's fingers are entwined with mine all the way to the car.
When we get to the car, he opens the door for me, and when I'm seated he closes it and walks to the other side.
"Wow that went better than I thought it would, the dance I mean," Max says, trying to get everyone's attention off of what just happened a few minutes ago, "I thought you said you didn't know how to dance," he went on, his fingers now entwined with mine.
I'm pretty sure I haven't said anything since I was eight.
"Hey, hey, hey!! No need to be getting sassy with me," he replies his hands flying up in defence.
I'm sorry. I didn't think that was much of a smart reply. Just a fact. Oh and for the record you said YOU didn't know how to dance.
"Okay, okay I admit I didn't know how to dance, but you didn't either," he says.
That's true. Hey Max, can I tell you something?
His eyes open wide when he read this. "Sure Rose, you can tell me anything. I'm here for you whenever you need me," he says.
I had fun tonight, and I'm glad you asked me to the dance. I text with a smile on my face.
"I'm glad you had fun. It was my pleasure to ask you to this dance," he says with a smile on his face.
"Hey look we're here," Max says pointing toward the sign reading IHOP.
"Let's go in and get a table. Rose, do you know how many people your sister is going to show up with?" Zach asks.
I stop and think for a minute. Five people plus her. So six people total. And then there are three of us, so we need a total of nine spots. I text Zach.
"OK, let's go," he says getting out of the car.
Max gets out of the car and opens the door for me. As he opens the he puts his hand out for me to hold as we walk in to the restaurant.
"Hello, just three?" Someone asks us.
"No, we have six others on there way," Max explains. As he finishes explaining this, I hear a bell ring and 6 other girls enter, one being my sister.
The person walks us all over to a section where they have a really long table with nine chairs at it.
Were they expecting us? I didn't think they ever had it set up like this, I think to myself.
"I'll be right back with the menus," the lady says politely heading back where we came in.
"You and Max should order from the kids menu since you're both still young," Lily says to Max and I jokingly.
Max and I both laugh in return.
"Lily, am I dreaming, or did your sister just laugh?" One of Lily's friends asks.
"Hush don't ruin it. I missed her laugh for seven years, and never thought I would hear it again, and its all thanks to Max" she replies smiling at Max when talking about him.
"So you're responsible for bringing back her old self?" She asks Max.
"Its a work in progress, but its coming along, with the help of Lily," Max says to my sister's friend. "Wanna hear my plan?"
