chapter nine

I wake up remembering everything that happened just last night. Frustration runs through my mind.  Lily promised me that I would have fun. I slide out of my bed and walk down the hall to the bathroom with a change of clothes.

I open the bathroom door and start warming the water to take a shower.

After I shower I dry off my body and put on the clothes I brought in.

When I go downstairs I'm greeted by Lily. "I saw you slam the door on Max last night. What happened?" she asks me gently.

I look away not wanting to talk about it. "Rose, please tell me. Is this about his plan?" she asks.

I nod knowing she won't leave me be until I answer.

"Rose, I know you don't like the idea of someone trying to get you to talk, but Max doesn't know that. I think you owe him an apology. He's simply trying to be your friend," she replies.

I simply shake my head. If I felt a need to apologize I would.

I walk over to the fridge and get a plain bagel out, and put it in the toaster. While waiting for the bagel to pop up I hear a few stairs creak. Lily must have gone upstairs. While I wait for the bagel to pop up I get a butter knife out of the utensil drawer.

Pop! I take my bagel out and quickly put it on a plate. I get some strawberry cream cheese out, and spread it on the bagel.

I sit at the table and eat my bagel. When I am finished eating I hear the door bell ring. At the sound of the bell the dog starts barking like crazy.

I wonder who is here at such an early hour in the day. No one ever comes to our house this early. Not even the door-to-door sales people.

Lily comes downstairs and opens the door. Curious to see who it is I look and see that it is Zach.

"Oh! you got here quick!" exclaims Lily.

"Yea, my house is only like 15 minutes driving distance from here," he replies.

"Where's Max?" Lily asks simply.

"He's out in the car. He wasn't sure if Rose would want to talk to him or not," he explains.

Why am I being brought into this conversation? I think to myself.

"Me being the sister, would make them apologize any ways. Go get Max and come on in," she tells Max as she shuts the front door.

Great now I have to apologize I think to myself.

"It's for your own good. You don't have that many friends, and Max really cares about you. I don't want you to lose that one person that could make a huge difference in your life," Lily says to me sitting next to me on the couch.

Before I have a chance to reply to Lily I hear the door open. "We're in the living room. It's the first right," Lily calls out.

Zach and Max walk into the room, and sit down.

We all sit in awkward silence. Then Lily stands up, whispering something to Zach, and the two of them leave the room. As Lily leaves she  glares at me and gives me a 'what are you waiting for' look.

I roll my eyes and pull out my phone.

Reluctantly I type: I was wrong to act the way I did last night. I'm sorry. Knowing that nothing will happen until I send this I hit 'send'.

Moments later I hear Max's phone go off. He pulls it out, and lights the screen.

"It's okay. I really didn't mean to hurt you yesterday. I'll make it up to you. I promise," he says.

I smile at him. Suddenly,I feel some fur brush up against my arm.

"Did you ever name her?" he asks me.

I never even asked for this dog. Lily is just trying to make me more social, I text him.

"That doesn't answer my question. Do you wanna give her a name?" he asks.

I just shrug.

"She needs a name, Rose. Even if you don't want her," he says to me.

I don't know any names for dogs though.

"Well, there's lots of names on the internet. Just look up girl names for dogs," he explains.

Max pulls out his phone and looks up some girl dog names. I look over his shoulder as the results show up.

"These are nice," he says pointing at the first website that shows up on Google.

I read the first couple of names on the website.

Bella, Lucy, Maggie, Daisy, Molly.

Daisy. That's what I should name her. It's similar to my mom's name.

I think I know what I want to name her.

"What did you decide?" He asks excitedly.

Daisy.

"I like it," he says happily, "I know of a pet store around here that we can go to get her a dog tag with her name on it. Wanna go?"

I nod, and run upstairs to get my shoes. After I put them on I go back downstairs. I hear Max's voice in the other room, talking to Zach probably.

"Are you ready to go?" he asks tossing the keys up and catching them in his hand.

I nod, but before we go to his car he hooks Daisy to her leash.

Hey Lily I'm going out for a while with Max. I'll be back in an hour

I make a confused look on my face.

"At most pet stores you're allowed to bring your pet with as long as it's on a leash," he explains.

-----

Max parks the car, and Daisy begins barking. We both get out and I put her on the ground.

When we enter the store we walk the aisles until we find the section with collars and dog tags.

I scan the names for the name Daisy. I find a yellow one with a pink rim.

"We should get her some treats," Max says.

I nod and we go find the treats.

"My dog likes these ones," max says holding up a package of mini bones.

That should work. Come on let's go check out.

We go up to the front of the store and wait in line to check out. When we get to the worker, she asks us if we found everything alright. I nod and she scans the two things.

"Your total is seventeen dollars and nine cents," she informs us.

I start to pull a twenty dollar bill out of my purse, but Max's stops me. "Let's split it," he says.

I put the twenty dollar bill away and pull a 10 out. He does the same.
