In 2004, fifteen-year-old mean girl Alyson Bauer formed a pop group named UTurn. The members included Bailey Richardson, her bestie; Justin Harrison, her British boyfriend; and Andrew Hawthorne, the school's bully.

Bailey dated the slacker, Ethan Jackson, but she dumped him. Andrew revealed he was a rising Broadway star to his bandmates and to his girlfriend, Amanda Hillel. Due to her religious family, Alyson snuck out of her house to meet with her bandmates to attend the regional TV auditions, New England's Teen Superstar.

UTurn started to hold gigs across Boston to circulate their name. Alyson broke up with Justin right before a gig; while Andrew ended things with Amanda at a basketball game. Andrew came out to Alyson as a bisexual. Alyson was supportive of him, and they become a power couple known as Andyson.

UTurn made the live shows, but not without Andrew exposing Libby Middleton, an ex-girlfriend, as a homophobe. She demanded a battle of the bands with her band 4Gurlz, UTurn, and Amanda's band, The Pushers. The band's founder, Derrick Armstrong, initially made the gig a paid event; but Andrew forced him to turn it into a free show.

Alyson, fearing the end of Connect8, decided to turn UTurn into an American version of her favorite British pop group. They all agreed to take this risk.

Due to not being saved immediately at the start of the live shows, UTurn decided to ditch their pop-rock sound and image in favor of a Euro-disco pop sound with a glammed-up emo look.

The Pushers felt their future seem bleak after finding out UTurn was getting special treatment. Amanda revealed to UTurn that Marcel O'Brien, the executive producer of the TV competition, might be adding more people behind UTurn's back. Marcel admitted the truth to Alyson., and said that none of the record labels want UTurn. They find out for themselves if Marcel was correct.

Feeling desperate, Libby started to expose UTurn on a blog she hacked into. She revealed that UTurn's special treatment; and exposed Andrew and Alyson as school bullies. She did the unthinkable by getting Andrew to publicly come out as a bisexual against his will. Alyson stood by Andrew as she gave Libby a punch in the face.

Libby's increasingly erratic behavior drove UTurn to New York City, giving them a chance to redeem themselves. Justin came clean of his neglected childhood, and his acts of vandalism to his bandmates. Alyson and Andrew revealed how they became childhood friends over destroyed toys.

Alyson demanded Marcel to allow UTurn to have a final say in everything; Marcel rejected the offer. UTurn released a song of theirs behind Marcel's back through a radio station. Marcel caved in to allow UTurn to have their say.

Libby attempted to get the votes rigged on the day of the live finale. UTurn, which became a five-piece with 4Gurlz member Stacie Morales, won fair and square. While celebrating their win, Connect8 was being revived.
