Chapter 5
Upon their return to base, Baekhyun was greeted at the entrance by a solider who had identified himself as the allocated cadet that was taken with showing the civilian his way around the military base, though most of this given tour would focus mainly on Baekhyun's private quarters that would accommodate him for the duration of his involvement in their care.
With Baekhyun preoccupied with arranging his new bedroom. Chanyeol and his team rushed back to their base of operations. Sehun and Jongin instantly got to work scanning through their countless bookshelves, eyes glancing through the book spines to try and locate a book that could shed some light on the appreciation that had manifested itself beside Baekhyun.
Chanyeol's primary concern was rooted in the strange being's power, especially since her capabilities were completely foreign and not something that he had happened across before. Having tasked Minseok and Suho to write detailed reports on their own views, Chanyeol got to work researching their victim cases in the hope of finding a match.
Instead, he was surprised to find a record that had been loosely added to one of the victim's files, which possessed a different handwritten script to the officer who had compiled the report. Chanyeol felt his blood turn to ice in his veins. According to the police report, Officer Lee frequently the old industrial estate due to it being a known place for substance abuse. Usually his patrol would lead him to find a few scattered injection needles or cans of breathable gas which were usually accompanied by various graffiti symbols painted along the unused buildings. However, this particular night while he was patrolling after having received a call from dispatch requesting him to check out a certain area along his route, Officer Lee was met with a big surprise. the glass windows of an abandoned industrial building had been completely obliterated, with shards of tiny glass fragments littering the ground. In the report, Officer Lee was strongly reassuring his interviewer that it was suspicious activity as he had never found himself stumbling upon a similar situation within that particular area.
The victim Officer Lee had found was clear of any toxins that could have been injected or ingested before his death, with no noticeable needle markings or signs of struggle. What the cornoner had noted in his report was that the man was healthy and the damage inflicted onto the man's body were small lacerations caused by the glass and the spiral carving located on the back of his left hand. The carving was what connected the victim with the other similar cases happening around the country.
Chanyeol turned his gaze to the handwritten statement. A witness! They had a witness to one of the crimes and hadn't even noticed! She had been with the victim prior to their death and had also been the one to contact dispatch, though she explains that the reasonings behind her disappearance was that she did not want to be linked with the case. According to her own words, she claimed that the situation had been extremely tense. They had agreed to meet up at the abandoned industrial unit to engage in breathable gas and fool around, but then the atmosphere changed and she took notice of the spiral carving on the back of his hand. It all happened so suddenly, they had been talking and then the windows around them had blown into thousands of shards and the victim never got back up.
"We have another case with glass involved?" Minseok wonders, peering over Chanyeol's shoulder at the laptop screen. "Isn't it a mere coincidence that there were broken pieces of glass on both occasions?"
"The broken glass happened as he died." Chanyeol announced. "We have a witness who was there when he died-"
"A witness? No one mentioned anything about there being a witness for any of the victims!" Minseok was verbally announcing what Chanyeol had already concluded. "Any contact details that we can use?"
"When they realised that this relates to the other supernatural cases, they had her blinked." Chanyeol huffed, crossing his arms against his chest as he leaned against the back of his seat. "Any chance we had to speak with her are gone."
"I bet it was that idiot McCall!" Minseok hissed, hanging his head between his shoulders. "You know how adamant he is to do things and ask questions later! He should have known that no one gets blinked until we have all the facts!"
"Could she be a woman in white?" Jongin's voice slips through Minseok's growing frustration, his question is rhetorical but he still directs it at Sehun who is currently nose deep in a Native American mythology book. "She wore a white dress but her hair was silver, rather than the supposed dark colour that the reports describe her possessing."
"They are known for their interest in cars, wasn't one of the victims found in her car?" Suho humors him with his own input on Jongin's theory.
Minseok seemed to deem it necessary since he uncapped one of the whiteboard markers and wrote the option down on the freshly cleared board. His preferred use of the colour green made their mixed thoughts and scribbles a little easier to comprehend.
"Maybe it's a Kuntilanak," Sehun suggested, though he continues to look into the Native American book. "Any recently deceased pregnant women?"
"Not according to the coroner's records!" Minseok announces, somehow managing to get back to his own computer without Chanyeol realising, but Suho still writes the option down in blue.
"None of that accounts for the jaw disfigurement or the piercing wail." Chanyeol sighs, gently guiding his fingers against the worry lines in his forehead. "The witness never claimed to see anything when one of victim's died, just taking into account that the atmosphere was tense before the windows surrounding them were completely obliterated."
"She doesn't make any mention of a sound either, does she?" Minseok wonders, Chanyeol is only capable of seeing his eyes over the edge of his computer monitor.
"Nope, her statement states that the conversation went quiet because of the sudden but apparent tension in the air, then - with no visual or auditory prompting, the windows practically exploded." Chanyeol can't help but recite the statement, his eyes coursing through the handwriting to try and see if there might have been anything that he missed. When there really wasn't anything else, he turned his gaze back up to his team.
Sehun slaps closed his Native American book and gathers it from is desk before walking towards one of the bookshelves closest to his desk. He slides the spine so that it is flush against the others, he hums quietly to himself as he scans the other books in their possession.
"So what are our characteristics?" he wonders aloud, turning to the semi-empty whiteboard at the top of the room.
"We've got two options so far - a woman in white, or Kuntilanak. Do any of you want to physically describe her again?" Suho wonders, holding out his uncapped blue marker.
"Short," Chanyeol supplied, having noticed how Baekhyun stood taller than the figure against the bookshelves in the Commander's office. "Extremely pale, long silver hair, skin almost plastered against her facial features-"
"White tattered dress with what I thought was blood stains at the bottom , but it was definitely cut shorter than it should have been, if the irregular lengths of material at the end were anything to go by." Jongin answers from across the room, tossing Sehun's rubber-ball in the air.
"She didn't appear to be wearing any shoes which is how I knew she wasn't a ghost." Sehun continued, pursing his lips.
"And don't forget the jaw she could unhinge and that terrible wail noise that she made..."
Suho pulls away from his information to look Chanyeol square in the eye. "Wail? I never heard a wail."
"Neither did I." Minseok pipes up, looking confused.
"Well I did!" Jongin announces to which his partner in crime also confirmed. Suho wrote down the additional information, though it was fairly obvious that this was getting rather interesting as they compiled their theories.
"Suho can you also make a note about the details regarding our sole witness?" Chanyeol questions, pleased to hear the elder hum in approval. He makes quick work of the email and clicks send, Suho's computer dinging from across the room. "Just say that she's been blinked for now-"
"Blinked?" Baekhyun's sweet voice pulled the men from their mind-map and towards the door to their command centre, where the college student rested against the threshold. "What does that mean?"
Panic ensues with the two youngest men snapping their heads to Chanyeol in the hope that he would have a valid and non-incriminating explanation for their secret process. Instead, to their surprise, it was Minseok who was happy to supply the information, taking it upon himself to address Baekhyun's curiosity.
"Well he was given clearance!" he makes it known to the room, a wide smile on his lips as his gaze momentarily falls to Chanyeol. "Blinking is a top secret process that occurs to the mundane individual who unfortunately ends up in close proximity to supernatural occurrences. It's a government run process that's similar to what happens in the film Men in Black. If we find people who have close encounters with beings from a supernatural race, we tend to make them forget those memories. It's a fairly easy process and it's done in the blink of an eye, which is why we say that someone's been blinked."
Baekhyun looked rightfully surprised, having never had the ability to comprehend that such technology was available to his country. Chanyeol was afraid of what else they may have to reveal to him in the coming weeks, which is why it was probably best that they try and finish up this case as quickly as possible, so everything could potentially return to normal.
"Huh." The college student replied, eyes lingering around their command centre. He pauses as his gaze lands on the giant whiteboard next to Chanyeol's desk, his mind quickly scanning through the compiled information they had gathered. "You guys are certainly handling my theory pretty seriously," he giggles, though it's evident in his voice that he's a little surprised. "You really think that it's a demon doing all of this?"
"No," Sehun explains, smiling politely as Baekhyun's gaze turns to him. "A demon was definitely not what we saw in Commander Song's office this morning."
"So I was right," Baekhyun grins, turning his attention to Chanyeol. He steps into the command centre and sharply closes the door behind him. The team watches him closely as he strolls towards the Chanyeol desk before taking a seat on the edge facing the white-board. "You guys did see something before you rushed over to protect me."
"A woman in a white dress," Chanyeol confirms, gesturing back to the whiteboard. "But we're still trying to guess exactly what she is. Our theories don't account for the-"
"Unhinging jaw and the supposed wail you three heard?" Baekhyun wonders, gathering the end of Chanyeol's sentence from the board ahead of him. Jongin and Sehun nod before Baekhyun turns back to Chanyeol who also confirms their story.
"Three of us heard it, which means that it has something to do with death. Only Chanyeol, Jongin and Sehun possess the ability of seeing ghosts or specters, the rest of us are left to our imaginations."
"Why does it have to be something involved with death?" Baekhyun wonders, leaning back on his wrists as his eyes find Minseok across the room.
"Because they are the only ones out of everyone who have physically seen death, which is why they're far more prone to experience beings associated with death that are otherwise hidden."
It seems to quell Baekhyun's curiosity for a moment, his eyes scanning over the whiteboard again. Chanyeol allows his eyes to take in his concentration, how his eyes narrow ever so slightly as his mind no doubt races with countless questions. His lower lip is slipped beneath his front teeth while his cheeks bloom with air. There is a shine in his eyes as his neck cranes to the side, the remaining sunlight breeches through the window and highlights a path that Chanyeol's lips would love to travel.
"Wearing white... silver hair... blood...unhinged jaw...silenced wail..." Baekhyun pauses for another moment, before slowly turning his gaze back to the Captain of this little team. "Could she be a banshee?"
