I took in a deep breath.
I could feel my body shaking.
Arm and arm the groomsmen and bridesmaids processed into the church. The priest came out and asked everyone to stand.
It was my turn! Was I making the right decision? It dawned on me, I was doing this marriage thing and with Fejiro.
The flower girls in turquoise blue lined the path with white and red rose petals as the music started. One comforting look from my father and I relaxed. He escorted me down the aisle, which seemed unending. I paid no attention to the guests who were gushing and squealing.
My attention was on him.
My husband, the love of my life, my everything. He stood taller, his shoulders back and his eyes on me. If I wasn't mistaken I could have sworn tears filled his eyes.
"I'm proud of you, my princess," my dad whispered, handing me over to my groom. My father placed my hand in Fejiro's and smiled. As a couple, we stood before the priest.
"Dearly beloved," he began, "we are gathered here this morning to witness the joining in holy matrimony of Fejiro Francis Ovie-Onyinwvi and Amarachi Jessica Okpara."
The rest of his speech was blur cos I could only focus on the man standing in front of me. I only understood from the point where Fejiro pulled a paper out of his right suit pocket.
He cleared his throat, his eyes holding mine captive. "From the very first moment I saw you, I knew we were meant to be. You have become my lover, my companion, and my best friend. You have made me the happiest man in the world today by agreeing to share your life with me. I promise to love you for who you are, and for who you are yet to become. I promise to be patient and to remember that all things between us are rooted in love. I promise to nurture your dreams and help you reach them. I promise to share my whole heart with you and to show you how deeply I care for you, no matter the challenges that may come our way. There's no one else I'd want to build a life with. Amarachi Jessica Okpara, you'll be my love and my wife, for eternity."
I felt a tear slip down my face and Fejiro used a handkerchief to dab it off.
Everyone cooed.
I smiled and stretched my hand towards Zara for my own hand written vow but the look on her face told me something was off. I narrowed my eyes when she shook her head from side to side.
She had forgotten the paper at the hotel!
I freaked out but Fejiro's soothing touch on my palm brought my face back to him. He looked even breathtaking in his white tuxedo. I didn't need a write up to tell this man how much I was willing to marry him.
"It's funny how I would forget my written vows on my wedding day." I started and the congregation laughed. "But it made me realize I don't need a piece of paper to tell you how lucky I am to call you mine. Your love and trust makes me a better person, each and every day. You encouraged me to grow. You helped believe in myself and become the person that I am today. Not only do I promise that my love for you will grow with each day, but I promise to be your friend and partner every step of the way. I'll love you in word and deed. I'll laugh with you, cry with you, scream with you, grow with you, and craft with you. To be your companion and your partner in all of life's adventures. Loving what I know of you and trusting what I don't yet know, I give you my hand. I give you my love. I give you myself, the good, the bad, and the yet to come."
Cheers filled the air and Fejiro winked at me. I laughed. We exchanged the rings, Fejiro ending his with a kiss on my fingers.
"If anyone objects to the marriage speak now or...." the priest was saying but Fejiro interrupted.
"It's better you don't speak. Except you want to go down six feet." I hit him playfully and the crowd erupted with laughter, some clapping their hands at his boldness. Even the priest gave off a big smile.
As assumed, no one said a word. "With the power vested in me, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride."
I held back a laughter.
People wey don fornicate.
Fejiro leaned in and kissed me softly like he had never done it before.
The wedding party was strictly by invitation but the one thousand capacity hall was filled to the brim. The decoration and lightning was perfect, even the speakers were not so noisy.
The six step castle cake that was taller than my tall self was the peak of my excitement. Fejiro and his family really outdid themselves on this one.Fejiro begged me to leave the wedding party planning to his family in a bid to surprise me and heck, was I over surprised.
The event went by so quickly after loads of speeches, comedy, music performance and owambe and people trooped to the gift corner to exchange their gifts for souvenirs. Some even congratulated us in person before moving to the gift corner.
"Who is that guy? He's been staring at you for so long." Fejiro whispered and I followed his eye and found the staring gentleman. AV's 'Confession' played in the background not so quietly, making us speak louder than we ought to.
"Uhmm... I'm not sure I know him..." I was saying.
Zara scoffed beside me, "Ah ahhh, Ajay, is that not your french ex-boyfriend?"
I was confused. I never had any french boyfriend.
I shook my head, taking another good look at him, "Nah. I don't know who that nigga is."
Fejiro chuckled, pulling my cheeks, "Wifey, stop trying to be razz. I love my women polished."
Wifey. I blushed
I loved the sound of that!
Zara hissed and Tega, who was Fejiro's best man, sighed.
"God, am I an air freshener? When will I call somebody's daughter wifey?" Tega joked and we laughed.
"Come let me give you wife." Zara offered.
"No no, abeg. I no want your own. You women are too violent. I'd rather have a peaceful woman.... Ouch!"
No you didn't guess right. It was neither me or Zara.
It was Oluwafunmilayo, Zara's younger sister and last born.
For some weird reason, I love saying that name in full.
Tega was about to whine but quickly stood up when he caught sight of her.
"Milayo, fancy seeing you here...." His lips gave off a nervous grin while his hand itched the back of his head.
I and Zara burst into laughter. Fejiro followed seconds later.
"Milayo, fancy seeing you here..." Zara mimicked, glaring at Funmi.
"Sister, he's just my friend." Funmi defended.
Zara scoffed, "I never said anything aunty Funmi."
"Uhmm, we'll kindly be excused." Tega took her hand and ran off before we could say anything.
I was expecting a comment from Zara, but she groaned instead. I gave her a questioning look.
"The twins are fighting again in my tummy." She rubbed her palms over her bulgy abdomen in a bid to stop the 'fight'.
I smiled, simultaneously rubbing her back.
"I just hope they won't stress you on top of the stress you're already stressed."
I helped her relax into her seat and she mumbled a thank you.
"Congratulations Jess, I'm happy for you." Victor stretched out his hand for a handshake and Fejiro took it even before I could decide if I should accept his gesture or not.
"Congratulations," the dark skinned lady beside him smiled.
"Thank you so much for honoring our invitation," Fejiro answered with a smile that didn't look real to me. The duo left to the gift corner and Fejiro shot me a glare.
"So you were planning to take his hand."
I laughed, "seriously babe?"
"My gee," a guy Fejiro introduced to me as Dele appeared and pulled Fejiro into a brief hug. "So for your mind now you don first me marry."
"No be you dey gather chicks from all over the world?"
"Ah ahhhh......"
"I'm a states bwoy..." Fejiro teased and the duo burst into laughter.
"You no well. Congratulations my man....."
"Thank you so much."
"Our wife..." He pulled me into a side hug, "Welcome to the family."
"Dele, abeg I no go share my wife with you." Fejiro pulled me to himself and placed a peck on my forehead.
"Don't mind this boy. I know he will take good care of you but if he misbehaves, abeg find me come." Dele whispered to me after he pulled me away from my husband's embrace. He shot a glare at Fejiro and added, "I go camot ya teeth."
"Dele, come dey go abeg. Before you take style collect my wife." I threw Fejiro a look and we laughed. Dele took his leave but not before whispering something abeg Efosa into Fejiro's ears.
"Happy married life to you both." It was the guy Fejiro said had been monitoring me. "Ajay, I guess you don't remember me. It's Tim."
"Congratulations Ajay." It was obinna and his wife this time around.
This had to be a gathering of exes, because what in the reunion is going on here.
I know I personally invited obinna. Yeah, we settled after sometime. But this Tim guy was just a one night stand. Who the hell gave him an invitation.
Fejiro replied to their greetings curtly while I stood smiling like a zombie. Tim pressed a paper into my hands before anyone could notice and walked off.
I would have been the one seated beside you today if I had not left the way I did. I know deep down you still have feelings for me. We could hook up sometime.
Call me.

My laughter at this guys stupidity was explosive because how could someone be so dumb even after nine years? I passed the letter to Fejiro and his reaction mirrored mine.
"What is making the both of you laugh so much?" Zara asked, stirring from her brief nap. I was also surprised when I noticed she was sleeping. I guess the whole wedding thing had drained her completely.
"It's that my french ex o. He gave me a very stupid note. That guy is not even my ex sef. We never dated." I mumbled the last two sentences, stretching the letter to Zara.
"Ahh kpele o... No be only seated beside you, na seated beside Yusuf...," Zara laughed "I don't even know where you find these animals in human skin."
"I don't......"
"....Last Last, na everybody go chop breakfast, shayo......" Zara sang out her lungs and I couldn't hold in my laughter as she stood up to sing along. Zara had always loved this particular song for no just reason.
"Eyyyy... This DJ no get sense. He would have played it when that Tim was here. Nonsense, oshi!" She pulled her lips in a long his and continued, "My eye ooo.... Don't cry o... I need igbo and sha.... Jesus!"
I and Fejiro turned immediately to see the reason why Zara screamed like that. Her eyes were wide open staring at her legs. I looked down only to notice water trickling down her legs.
"Ajay, I. I hope it's not what I'm thinking?" She asked, her eyes vividly telling me to do something.
Fejiro stood in panic, "I think your water just broke. Let me get your husband."
"Mogbe! I'm finished." Zara screamed and I rush to hold her.
"Where is that Omogei? Kenechukwu!!" She kept screaming on top of her lungs. Everyone close by who noticed the drama rushed to find out what was happening.
Fejiro ran back to us with a panicking Kenechukwu.
"Kenechukwu Arinze, sheybiii I told you to postpone your baby making till the next day but you refused. See what you have..... Ouchhhh!!!"
Kenechukwu ran to her side, "Babe, please calm down. We need to get you to the hospital. I called the driver already."
Zara kept screaming as the contractions hit her even harder. Kenechukwu managed to pick her bridal style and together, we left for the hospital.
My wedding day ended with the birth of two beautiful girls.
Okay, that was not the real end. It ended with a hot baby making session.
