The next morning, Ajay rented a car and decided to take a tour around the city of Dubai. She visited few tourist sites including the Burj khalifa and Mall of the Emirates. She made a lot of videos and took a lot of pictures with the aid of her tripod stand.
When it was 12pm, she went shopping for the gown and accessories she would be wearing for the inauguration which was scheduled for 2pm at the branch location which was just about 4km from the hotel, after which she retired to her hotel room to get ready.
Thirty minutes to the time, Ajay stepped out of the hotel building. She was dressed in a red body con, long-sleeved dress with nude stilettos. Her clutch purse on her hands and big sun shades protected her eyes from the sun. She was supposed to attend the program with Victor but he had to be there earlier as he was part of the organizing committee. Ajay got into the car she hired earlier and drove off the location of the event.
On getting to the location of the event, there was a slight car security check at the entrance after which, a tally is issued to the driver for safety reasons. Ajay collected her tally and slowly drove in. The parking lot was already filled with cars so she drove slowly trying to find a parking spot. Just as she sighted one, a car bumped into hers from behind, making her jerk in her seat.
"Oh Lord Jesus! Who is that bastard?" Ajay huffed in annoyance. For crying out loud, the car was rented! Ajay came down from the car and went straight to the car behind her, knocking angrily on the tinted window. The stranger took his time before whining down his glass, sparing her no glance at all with the large-framed black shades that almost covered his small diamond-shaped face. He looked very much African and Ajay just knew he would be a Nigerian.
Them too dey find trouble!
"You bastard! Are you blind or something?" Ajay shouted at the stranger angrily. The stranger continued looking ahead, totally ignoring her. Ajay paced a little in frustration, "Jesus Christ! Are you deaf or you just want to be stupid?"
"Well, you were driving too slowly. This one's on you." The stranger finally replied still not looking her way. Ajay gave a deadly chuckle and left to check wether his car gave hers any scratch and thankfully, they weren't really obvious.
"Just thank your stars, cause I would have squeezed the money for repair out of your assh*le! Rubbish!" She hissed and went back into her car before parking it properly and heading towards the building. She could see the annoying stranger rushing behind her as she pressed the elevator button. There were three other foreign people in it and she joined them. The stranger rushed and caught on the elevator before the doors could finish closing, his strongly scented perfume was almost chocking her.
"Who the f*ck uses this much perfume?" Ajay mumbled under her breathe.
"Cheap skates who know nothing about expensive perfumes always have mild inferiority complex." He snickered and Ajay gave out a loud hiss in annoyance which got the heads of the foreigners turning towards her.
Ajay chuckled nervously, "Sorry, it's nothing." She apologized with an American accent and the stranger held in a laughter. She rolled her eyes.
The ceremony had already begun when the got to the large hall. Victor and Ajay sat together with two other people on a round table. Ajay wasn't paying attention to what was going on. Her mood was really sour and Victor couldn't help it but ask.
"Jess, what's wrong? You've been frowning since you got here." Victor asked and Ajay shook her head, "Nothing. I'm fine."
"Both of us know you're not fine. You didn't even make any comment when I called you Jess, and that, I say, is very very unusual." Ajay almost laughed. He caught her.
"Okay... Okay, fine. It's just one random dude I met on my way here...." She dutifully narrated everything that happened, ranting where possible. Victor listened carefully and laughed quietly almost all through.
Just before she could conclude the story, her eyes came in contact with the stranger climbing up the podium to give some speech. He was still wearing his shades even in a dimly lit conference hall. She rolled her eyes at his stupidity.
"Speak of the idiot....." Ajay said and Victor turned to look at him. He almost chocked on his saliva when he caught a glimpse of the stranger.
"What's wrong?" Ajay asked, non-chalantly
"Ajay, do you want to loose your job?" Victor whisper yelled, "That's the Executive Director of OPEL. I heard he is the next president-to-be."
Ajay couldn't care less, "That doesn't give him any excuse to be bratty and rude." Victor gave her the 'like seriously' look and she rolled her eyes turning to listen to the speech the rude brat had to give.
Before he started, he pulled off his shades and smiled at the audience, "Good day ladies and gentlemen, it's a great honour to be in your midst today and to be the one to give out the opening speech of our first branch outside the walls of Africa. I want to thank the President, Shareholders and Executives of OPEL for this great opportunity...."
Ajay couldn't help but marvel at his voice. It sounded so much like Fejiro's just that the accent was much more better. She stared at the stranger intensely, trying to figure out where she had seen his face. She tapped Victor, who was beside her on his thighs, "Has that man come to our office before?"
"Yes now, he comes twice every year to do a general inspection."
"I thought you said he was the Executive Director?" Victor nodded in reply, "Why does he come for general inspection then? Is that not meant for the zonal directors?"
"Nobody knows the reason tho. Rumors have it that his secret lover works at our branch."
"Wow! Such loyalty!" Ajay rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with sarcasm. Victor laughed at her reaction.
"You're very funny. But how come you've never met him as the branch manager that you are?" Victor asked.
"I'm wondering so too. But his face looks a tad bit familiar without the ugly shades." Ajay made sure to stress on the ugly, squeezing her face in disgust. Victor only laughed out his heart. She was just so hilarious.
"Stop hating on him johh. The shades don't look that bad."
"Whatever!"
After few minutes, he concluded his opening speech and a round of applause could be heard throughout the large conference hall. Ajay's eye met his for a brief moment and they both frowned at each other, Ajay dutifully rolling her eyes.
Other events followed with loads of side attractions and entertainment from popular foreign and Nigerian artists and dancers. The team that were going to start the branch were called out as well as all branch manager's and senior executives available for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
They all gathered at the entrance of the main office building and the scissors was given to Mr stranger yet again. He gave a brief speech before dutifully cutting the ribbon. Everyone clapped and cheered loudly. The door was open and all attendees were allowed to take a tour around the building. It was a three-storey building painted with mostly white colour and a very light shade of brown on the two tall pillars that stood at the entrance.
Ajay wasn't left behind. She took a lot of pictures and videos as usual with Victor's help before they both retired back to their hotel rooms at 5:30pm. They had a little break until 8 when the company's dinner would hold. It was in the same hotel, so Ajay just returned the rented car. Her flight back to Nigeria was already scheduled for 9am the following morning so she wouldn't be needing the car anymore.
Ajay stretched as she hung the red off shoulder thigh slit gown which she just retrieved from the drycleaner, in the wardrobe. That was her outfit for the evening and she had it in mind to make heads turn that night.
"Especially all those oyibo men..." She mumbled to herself, smiling seductively as she gave the dress one more long look. She already booked a make up artist that morning and she was already in Ajay's hotel room having snacks which Ajay served her. Ajay was determined and very much ready to doll herself up.
She quickly took a shower and sat in front of the vanity table with her white bathrobe and a white towel around her hair. She applied all her skin essentials before the makeup artist got to work.
In an hours time, she was all dressed up and ready for the dinner. She had already agreed to be Victor's date but the company had other plans. They gave out random seat numbers to each attendee, so no one knew who their actual date was. Ajay was not exempted. However, she was okay with anyone as long as the person was neither ugly nor stupid.
A call came in from Victor announcing that he was just outside her hotel room waiting for her. Even though she was not his date, he still offered to accompany her to the venue. Ajay applied her perfume for the umpteenth time and then took a long look at her self in the mirror using her hands to smoothen her dress. She gave a satisfying smile at the reflection she saw in the mirror. Picking up her white clutch purse and her phone which rested on the bed, she made her way out of her hotel room.
The uniformed waiters were already at the door waiting to direct attendees to their appropriate tables when they arrived. A young female waiter quickly directed Ajay to her table which was at the fore front of the hall. Almost all eyes were on Ajay as she took slow and confident steps towards her table. They couldn't help but gush at her hour-glass figure and exceptionally pretty face. She smiled in satisfaction.
Mission accomplished!
Her so-called date was yet to arrive so she made herself comfortable with the small chops that were already placed on the table. The event was almost an hour in and her date was yet to arrive. She was already disgusted at how a man could be so irresponsible when the strong scent of the perfume she perceived that morning at the elevator hit her nose. She turned her head immediately to the direction of the smell when she saw Mr. stranger pulling out the chair opposite her and taking his seat. She sighed in annoyance, mentally face palming.
"Just when I thought I was in for some enjoyable dinner....." She mumbled, looking away. "Luck is not just on my side today. I should have known better when he didn't attempt coming early unlike his mates." She hissed inwardly and concentrated on Victor who was already dancing with his date on the dance floor along with several other couples. His date looked so Indian and she was really cute. Ajay felt a pang of jealousy as she watched them closely.
"Are you just going to keep staring at them?" the stranger's voice brought her out from her thoughts. Her heart suddenly leaped in her chest.
That voice.... It just sounded so much like Fejiro to be false.
She slowly turned her head towards the stranger almost trembling in her seat. She began taking in all his facial features and she could spot just very little differences between the love of her life and the stranger currently sitting opposite her. She shook her head severally in denial.
"No, no..... It just can't be him. No... It's not him. Yes, there are so many people in the world that could look so alike or he could have a lost twin. Who knows?" She assured herself, slowly looking away.
The stranger cocked his brow at her, "This one you are staring at me like this, did you miss me?"
"Excuse me?!" She exclaimed, glaring intently at him.
The stranger laughed, displaying a beautiful set of teeth Ajay was so used to. She just stared at him totally motionless. He stretched his hands towards her, offering her a handshake, "Hi Ajay, I'm Ovie-Onyinvwi Oghenefejiro Francis, the Executive Director at OPEL. Really very pleasant to meet you."
