- Chapter 9 -

My mother and I sat on that couch for the next couple of hours. The bonding experience was comforting and made me feel so much better about everything that was going on. Just knowing that even if my father couldn't be there that my mother would. I had to fix this, I had to fix what I had ruined. I needed to figure out why this wish didn't work out the way I had planned it too, why Ailis even granted the wish in the first place? Once my mother fell asleep I untangled my arms from around her, she drifted further into the couch. Once in my bedroom I finally let out the breath I was holding.

"Ailis wake up--" I whispered rushing over to my computer desk where the leprechaun slept. I placed my hand on his shoulder pinching it between my index and my thumb. He rolled over in the small hand towel I had offered him as a blanket. He stirred rapidly before jumping from his slumber in a fist frenzy.

"Oh bleedin 'ell 'ill ye--" Ailis shouted with his eyes still shut and drool still on the side of his lips. He rolled back over his arms still flailing as he tucked himself back into bed. I rolled my eyes before pinching him again. He repeated his fists of furry before finally rolling onto his side. He sat up quickly looking at me, shaking his hand towards me.

"Ailis I need your help." I whispered trying to wake him up enough that he was coherent. This was harder than I had expected it to be. I shook the tiny man now that he was seated but he still wasn't very responsive. "Ailis." I snarled a little louder.

"Whaat do ye wan'" He mumbled still half asleep.

"I need you to take back the wish you granted last night." His eyes perked open as if what I had said lit a spark inside his stomach.

"You want me ter chucker waaat?" Ailis grumbled through a fit of some yawns. This guy was nearly impossible to wake up.

"I made a mistake by saying anything last night and I really didn't think you would take me seriously. I want things to go back to the way they were before I made that wish. I want my mother happy with Miles, I want the wedding to still be happening, and last but not least I want everything to be normal again." I could feel Ailis losing interest with my desperate pleas.

"I don't tink oi 'av enoof magic. oi nade gauld." I panicked, his words were hard to understand but it sounded like he was asking for gold. If Ailis didn't have enough magic that meant my mother was going to miserable until she got over my father on her own. I couldn't just start introducing her to guys because I didn't know anyone her age she would like.

"What do you mean you don't have enough magic? How do I get you more?!" I fumbled through my many racing thoughts. Where did one get magic in this world?

"brin' me gauld." I shook my head, did he really think that humans just had a million pounds of gold stashed in their pillows that they sleep on?

"Where do you expect me to get that?" He lays down again before rolling over onto his side.

I sat in Nathan's car as he drove me home. I couldn't help but smile as his silly music playing through the speakers of the old chevrolet. I wanted to strangle the little guy. He was here to be helpful and he was being the exact opposite of that.

"Ailis, you are here to fix things for me, stop being so selfish and fix these for me." I wanted to scream and cry. I was so frustrated that he wasn't helping me more than he was. i needed him to pay attention and realize what he did wrong. Why wasn't he so open to fixing it. Why did he need more gold?

"I canny fix anythin' withoyt magic, withoyt gauld oi canny make magic." Ailis was being serious. His voice showed how stern he actually was being. I didn't know what to do and I wasn't sure where I was going to get more gold from. I searched around my room to see if there were any decorations with gold plating, maybe some little trinket or something. Then it hit me, I had jewelry in my bathroom that had to have been gold. I jumped from where I was leaning before grabbing Ailis carrying him over to the bathroom. I sat him on the counter his tiny grumbled going ignored.

"I think I might have gold." I mouthed digging through the drawers until I found the little boxes I used to store all of the earrings I didn't wear. I dug through the messes until I found anything that looked to be slightly the correct color. I quickly handed over the earrings I had dug out of my stash before he held the pile in his hands rubbing them together between his fingers.

"This wil' do." He mumbled before he began to chuckle.

"Okay so fix things." I shouted waiting for him to do something, I wanted him to do anything that would help fix the situation I had caused. All I needed to do was learn to not use those words around Ailis. I shouldn't be making stupid wishes that were going to affect other people.

Before I knew it Ailis stood with a glowing light in the palm of his hands, instead of being green like when he was granting a wish this time it was as gold as the purest ring only fit for a queen. After watching Ailis for a few moments things began to get blurry. My eyes were growing tired and the magic was beginning to fade away. I found my body growing more exhausted with every second that passed by. Before I knew it my vision had blacked out and everything had gone silent.

"So Nathan what made you stay that night?" I questioned tugging at the straps on my bag that lay on the floor. Nathan was driving me back to my dorm after school so we could hang out. I couldn't help but smile as the wind rushed through my hair. Nathan was driving fast down a backroad in the old chevrolet.

"I don't know, I had a feeling like it'd be a good thing to do. It was though, because you came back. Even after your awkward exit. What was that anyways?" He chuckled as he put in the clutch shifting the vehicle into another gear.

"Yeah, I have no clue what that was, I guess I just got so awkward and nervous that I ran away. I'm sorry, I'm not very good at dates." I tried to come up with something but there really wasn't anything I could say to justify what I had done. How do you explain to someone that the reason you ran out on the date was because you were trying to hide a leprechaun from being discovered by over a hundred people.

Nathan pulled into the parking lot by my dorm and I began to grab my things. I grabbed the door before he shouted a quick no in my direction. Pausing in my place I watched as he jumped out of the driver side, rushing around the front of the car before grabbing the door for me. I couldn't help but smile at this small gesture. I didn't remember much from this morning so I wasn't sure if my mother was going to be home or not. I quickly mumbled a thank you before swinging my bag over my shoulder.

"Do you want to come in?" I felt nervous. I hadn't asked a boy before if he wanted to come hang out with me inside my room. I've never had a boy want to drive me home let alone show any amount of interest in me by opening the door.

"Yeah of course." Nathan threw his hand in the air as if he was giving up on whatever he was doing. He paused for a moment before looking over at his car. "Actually I have a better idea, not that your room doesn't sound great but I want to show you something if you will allow me."

"Sure." I mumbled before heading back for his car. I glanced back towards the building wondering where Nathan wanted to take me. I wondered if my mother would try calling to see how my day went. Odds are she would be busy and I wouldn't have to worry about it, I would be home before she even remembered.

I jumped back into the passenger seat. I placed the backpack on the floor and quickly opened it to see if Ailis was alright before Nathan jumped in the driver's side. Nathan started the car as the motor fired to life, he quickly backed out of the parking spot before we were yet again flying down the road. I watched the scenery as the trees flew by outside the leaves beginning to change to their beautiful colors of reds and yellows.

"This place is special to me and it's where I like to go when I need to think. Honestly I just want to spend the night there. I hear there is supposed to be a meteor shower tonight." He paused for a moment as his hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. "I just don't always like going up there by myself if you know what I mean." He seemed just as awkward as I felt. Both of us fumbling over the words we were trying to come up with.

"Sounds like an awesome place I can't wait to see it." I pulled out my phone quickly texting my mother. I couldn't be too sure Nathan wasn't going to do anything to hurt me,

"It really is," I couldn't help but get caught in his eyes as he turned to smile at me. I wasn't sure where things with Nathan were going but with how nervous he made me they had to be going somewhere, whether that wasn't somewhere good.

It was a longer drive than I had expected as thirty minutes later we were still on the road sitting in an awkward but comfortable silence. Nathan pulled into a gravel parking lot before he placed the car in park. I looked out over the edge of a cliff seeing the beautiful view of the entire city below us. Nathan had brought me to one of the cities most famous outlooks.

"This is your special spot?" I questioned smiling at how he allowed me to be a part of this moment. I didn't know why Nathan was showing me his special place but something about this felt like he was opening up to me.

"I know we haven't hung out for very long but I thought our date was amazing and I really want to get to know you better Emerson." He placed his hands in his pockets still staring through the windshield. There weren't any other cars around us as we were the only ones here tonight. The sun was beginning to set casting an orange overshadow on the trees.

"Geez, I didn't realize by bringing you here that your beauty would outdo this."

I couldn't help but blush at his comment. "Thank you." I mouthed before drawing my attention back to the overlook. This place was breathtaking and I hadn't been to an outlook in years. I brought my attention back to the man sitting next to me and I couldn't help but think of one thing that would make this better. If only Nathan would kiss me.

I sat there patiently staring at Nathan just wishing he would do something. Before I could realize it there were green sparks flying through the air and Nathan was leaning closer to me. My heart skipped a beat. What was happening here?
