- Chapter 3 -
Once I made it to school it was easier to keep Ailis concealed, as long as he stayed quiet there wouldn't be much trouble, and we had already made it through the tough classes. Near silent snores had come from my bag the entire day. As I was leaving my math class I let my mind wander with the thoughts of keeping the little man in my backpack hidden throughout the rest of the day; I didn't notice the stranger in front of me.
My paced quickened as I thought about getting to my next class as quickly as possible to drop off my backpack. This only made colliding with the man even worse. I fell to the floor losing all grip on my bag. Damn, you were nearly there. I looked around the hallway as all the students in our general area had stopped, some witnessing my fall.
"Oh mugfuts!" The Irish voice shouted through the thin material of my backpack. He must have ripped the tape off earlier without me noticing. I rushed to find the strap of the bag. I needed to get out of here. Did anyone hear Ailis? Everybody was staring at me and I was just praying to the heavens above that Ailis would keep his trap shut.
"Oh I'm so sorry." A hand reached out to help me up, I gladly accepted it before trying to rush away from the situation. It didn't matter who the stranger was, on a college campus this big it was rare that I would see him again.
"It's okay, It was my fault. Thank you." I mumbled pulling my bag close to my chest. I could feel the tiny Leprechaun moving around inside. I squeezed a little harder before hearing a slight grunt. The boy just staring at me, his short blond hair slightly ruffled. He seemed to be teetering on his feet, also nervous. Why was he nervous though?
"No, hey can I help you to your class. I mean you kind of hit the floor pretty hard." My face flushed the brightest red my skin could muster. How embarrassing.
"I'll be fine." I said pushing passed him. I quickly weaved through the corridors filled with other college students trying to get to whatever class they had signed up for. I had automotive next. I was slightly nervous to walk into the room once I found it. I hated first day situations because you never knew who was going to be in your class and I was unsure of how my teachers were going to treat me. Were they going to be strict or lenient? I was hoping at least one other girl was going to be there but odds are I would be the only one. My nerves were definitely present.
I entered the room taking a seat in the small classroom area, setting the backpack softly on the ground. There were a few muffled noises as the zipper begin to undo itself. I kicked the bag softly.
"Ailis I just need a few more hours." I whispered hoping no one else in the classroom would hear me. The zipper continued to open slightly and I wanted to scream. He was supposed to be smarter than this. Especially because he was the magical creature. Don't they teach those guys how to not get caught? Once the zipper was open far enough his tiny hand reach out, i've never wanted to die so bad in my life. What the hell was he doing?
I lifted my bag quickly trying to hide his tiny appendage from anyone who might be able to see it. He stuck his tiny head out looking around the room. "How much longer ye gon be?" He whispered in his best quiet voice.
"Why?" I snarled, glaring at him; He just rolled his eyes.
"Never answering my Q's just yappin your trap. I need to take a Whaz." He grumbled. How did one take a Leprechaun to the bathroom?
"What do you want me to do about that?" I knew I looked like an idiot talking to my bag, and if anyone heard me I'd certainly be deemed clinically insane. Ailis tucked his head back into the backpack zipping it back up quickly. I must have offended the tiny green man.
The teacher entered the classroom starting his lecture, immediately drawing us in. A lecture I had been through a couple times before. I was only one class away from getting certified in this field. I could have recited his speech before he even finished. I looked around the room to the see the awkward boy from earlier sitting in the back corner of the class. What are the odds he would be here too? His soft green eyes were watching me. My heart jumps into my throat. I shot him a smile before turning around but that smile was quickly replaced with pure terror, had he seen me talking to my backpack?
Before the lecturer took us out into the shop to show us around, he placed a paper down on the table and had all of the students in the class write down their phone numbers in case we needed to get in contact with one another. I wasn't able to take my bag, or Ailis into the shop. Hopefully he could keep himself out of trouble. I followed the rest of the students around the shop half ready to fall asleep while standing there, yet too on edge to function normally. As I wished I didn't have to go through the safety speech again I kept glancing over my shoulder to make sure Ailis was still okay. I couldn't see him.
While the teacher was making us look around the room for all the fire extinguishers. I noticed a little green blur scurrying around on the floor making my heart sky rocket in my chest. I watched the floor like a hawk trying to find the little creature. There were too many project cars lying around the room and too many parts scattered to find the tiny man. From the old pickup truck in the first bay, to the teachers project car in the second, I wasn't sure how it would be possible to find anything here. I prayed that he was still in the backpack in the classroom.
The instructor led us to another part of the room. I glance around at all the students standing in the huddle. They were all too worried about getting all the information written down to mind anything that could possibly be happening on the floor. Except for one. There was the same boy as earlier, the same one that I had ran into, and those same eyes that wouldn't stray from me.
I finally was able to pull myself away from those green eyes questioning gaze. I felt uncomfortable under his stares but I knew I needed to just forget about it. I surveyed the room as discreetly as I could, trying to blend with the other students who had never seen this shop before. That's when I saw it again. Another little blur of green rushing to another portion of the shop, except this time I saw him. He was heading from one car to the next. I needed to look under the car that the class was standing next to. The only thing I had was a pencil and the handbook I held.
I quickly fumbled with my pencil until I was able to drop it, the writing utensil falling from my grasp as it clattered against the cement floor. I winced at the noise as it echoed louder than I had hoped it would. The entire class turned to look at me. "Sorry guys." I whispered before slowly bending down to pick it up. I took what felt like forever as the clock was ticking rapidly. Students were bringing their attention to me while I was bent down to see the tiny little leprechaun had indeed escaped from my backpack.
Ailis stood under the old vehicle with a few cables in his hand. He was running his hands around the cable viciously trying to tear it apart. What the hell was he doing? "That bastard." I accidentally said allowed. The entire class turned towards me again as I felt my face flush with red.
"Everything alright?" The instructor asked, everyone seemed to be either confused or judging me. I nodded my head quickly standing up. I needed to figure out what Ailis was doing.
After the teacher was done lecturing I rushed back to the classroom to find my bag laying the contents scatter around. I let out a sigh brushing my brown hair out of my face before zipping my bag back up. Ailis was going to have to find his own way home. Luckily for me, my trip home wasn't very eventful.
I closed the door to my dorm. Glancing down at my phone I had thought about calling my mother but she was still at work leaving me alone to my thoughts.Dragging a leprechaun around was exhausting, constantly worrying about where he was could drive any sane person mad. I sat down on my bed pulling some headphones off the top of the headboard. I was going to try and listen to some music for a little bit of help relaxing.
Placing the ear buds in my ears I scrolled through my phone trying to select a pandora station. I decided on Dua Lipa. The music played in my ears as I laid back closing my eyes. My mind kept drifting back to the look on Ailis's face as he stood with those cables in hand underneath the car. I couldn't figure out where he had disappeared to after I made a fool out of myself. We were going to have to figure something else out because there was no way I could drag him to school with me everyday. I couldn't help but think about how this was all probably just a dream. I would wake up soon and relive this day in a world without leprechauns.
When I was finally able to clear my head I found myself singing the words softly to myself before something soft brushed across my fingers that were laying by my side. I pulled my hand closer to myself rubbing the tingling feeling off my hand. Something was there, beside me, I could just tell; my eyes stayed firmly shut because I was sure I knew exactly who it was.
"Mornin' Emerson." The words were muffled through the music and they sounded like they were off in the distance. I decided to ignore them as they would go away soon enough and I would wake up from my dream. The words echoed through the air again before something lightly tapped my forehead. I wasn't going to open my eyes. I wanted this to all go away and I didn't want to have to worry about it anymore.
Before I could shift in my bed something had grabbed my eyelid. I froze as the tiny little creature pried my eye apart, his face peered into my pupil. Lifting his hand up he reached forward getting ready to poke me in the eye.
"What the hell are you doing!" I jumped up sending Ailis flying onto his backside.
"Finally, we have work to do." Picking himself up he began to wipe off his green petticoat. "Come on, we need some cereal and then some gold. Do ye got any?" I pulled the remaining headphone out of my ear. What the hell was he talking about with cereal and gold. Shit.
"I'm sorry I forgot to get you cereal." I couldn't help it, I honestly felt bad for locking him in my bag; even if it wasn't that well of a prison. I had promised him cereal and I needed to keep up that end of the bargain.
"Forget the cereal... I need gold!" He shouted in the thick Irish accent I still could barely understand. I couldn't seem to figure out why he needed gold. Didn't all leprechauns just have all the gold in the world.
"Why do you need gold? Where did you go after you broke out of my backpack? Also what were you doing under the car at school?"
"Leprechauns need gold, that is nun' ya business, and I was tryin to find the gold." His hand fiddles in his pocket before he pulls out a few strands of copper wiring. He was trying to find gold in the cars?
"Gold in a car?" Last time I checked, there wasn't any real gold in cars.
"Yeah, so I can make more magic." He nodded.
"Ailis there is no gold in cars." I informed the tiny man, his green eyes watching me carefully. His red hair was rather messy from his adventures today.
"Those Bastards!" Ailis shouted as his tiny foot struck the ground. "Now what will I do?"
