- Chapter 16 -
My brain fumbles over the math equation in front of me. I search around the room as I try to see if anyone else was struggling with this test as much as I was. It seemed like all of the other students were too focused on the problems to really show any fear. My heart was shaking in my chest, vibrating off my rib cage as I look at the next few questions. I cursed myself for not studying harder for this test. I was too focused on my eleven page paper and the trials.
Speaking of the trials, I hadn't seen Ailis all day. He seemed like he was always missing searching for gold. I wondered if I had any necklaces I could give him. Maybe there was something that would provide him with more magic hidden in my room somewhere. I made a mental note to check the next time I was at my mother's house. I needed this magic because I needed to get Miles back. My mother needed to be happy again and I had to figure out how I was going to do that.
I shook my head trying to focus up on the test in front of me. I only had like fifteen more minutes before I needed to hand it in. I was beginning to panic that I wasn't going to be able to finish this test. My first math test of the semester and I was going to fail it.
I struggle to get my pencil to move on the paper as others seemed to just breeze through it. Some students have even finished, handed in their tests and now they were off galavanting with friends or whatever they did in their free time. I envy those students. I wanted to be off wandering the real world instead of in here trying to figure out what was going on. The problems seemed to get harder but I did my best to muddle my way through them. Once I had an answer down on every single one of them I decided it was time to just give up. I walk the test to the front of the class placing it face down on the desk before heading out of the room. I let a breath of relief escape my lips as I entered the hallway. Most students were in their classes so they were pretty empty.
My shoes echo against the tile as I head towards the parking lot. I was going to swing by my mother's house to check for any jewelry. I wondered if she would be home. It didn't take long for me to reach my car once I was in the parking lot. My feet seemed to fumble against the ground as they knew the route by now.
The day had been cool enough that Ailis decided to just hang out in my car instead of coming into class with me. He was tired of listening to my teacher drone on and one about useless stuff while he was trying to do his very own school work. I couldn't blame him. That was like double school and with how strict his teachers were I'm sure it wasn't easy.
Once I was in the driver's seat I quickly start the engine and place the car in reverse. Backing out of the parking spot I head down the road heading towards the busy highway. It wouldn't take me long to get home from here. I just needed to get through the dangerous busy college roads. Too many young kids who weren't the best at driving all rushing around.
Ailis shakes his head as he jumps up onto the seat peeking out the window. He seemed to like watching the world rush by as we drove. I couldn't help but smile every time I glanced over at him. He seemed so content in his life. Not a single worry in the world as he watches the pastures of wild green grass flow past us.
"Are you feeling any better about your assignment?" I question trying to make small talk. I hated the awkward silence of the car ride. I would turn on my radio but it was broken. The darn thing had clunked out on me about a year ago and I was too lazy to fix it as I never drover too far.
"Meh, I guess it's alright, I will get the assignment done," Ailis spoke slowly and careful to make his dialect as easily understood as possible. I mentally thanked him for this. It was helpful. When he got talking to fast I couldn't quite understand him.
I began to slow my car to a stop as we came up on the four way stop. The car lurches forward as I press on the brake pedal. Ailis leans forward slightly before falling back into the seat. I begin to check all directions to make sure it was safe for me to go when something come crashing into the back of the car. A large jolt sends Ailis and I rocketing forward nearly crushing our skulls as we hit our hits on the dash. Well Ailis just hits his on the seat. I look around for a quick moment trying to figure out what it was that had happened.
"What was that?" I shout as the horns echo in the distance. Had I been hit by another car? I quickly undo my seatbelt jumping out of the car to look at the scene behind me. A young girl who looked barely over the age of sixteen stands bawling as she looks at her car. Her entire front bumper was smashed and cracked into a million tiny pieces.
"My dad is going to kill me when he sees this," I check my car carefully to examine the damage she had done. She must have been going farely quickly. Especially to do the damage she had done. My car was nearly ten feet into the intersection when I hadn't even crossed the line in the first place. I shook my head in annoyance. I wanted to scream and shout at her. Yell at her to ask her if she was stupid. She could have killed someone, but for some reason I just couldn't seem to get the words out.
"Calm down," I shout at the girl only making her cower under the tone of my voice. I didn't feel bad though. She needed to pay better attention to the road and maybe this was the thing she needed to learn that lesson. It just sucked that it could have been at the expense of someone else's life. How could people be so careless?
I pull out my phone scrolling through it to find Nathan's name. I didn't have a father to call so I figured he would be the next best thing. Quickly dialing his number the phone began to ring. It continues to ring for a few moments before it goes to voicemail. I curse as the ground as I realize he must be at work. I shook my head in annoyance before walking over to the girl. She had tears rolling down her face like a stream. A river crashing against a dam until it breaks open and the water comes flooding out all at once.
"First off, are you alright?" I question reaching for the girl. She pulls away from me nodding her head as the tears continue to plummet on the ground. "Hon, I need a yes or no answer," I could feel my body tensing as she was unresponsive to me. I decided I might just need to soften my tone. I did so as she answered my question.
"Yes, I'm fine, until my dad gets home and realizes what happened. He is going to kill me," She begins to panic again. I grab her shoulders holding her so she can look in my eyes.
"He is not going to kill you, he is going to be so happy to know that you are okay, he might be annoyed about the car, but you are what is important to him, so stop bawling, wipe your tears ands let's get some cops out here so we both can head on our ways," She wipes her eyes sniffling as she takes a seat in her car. I tell her to call the police and explain to them that there has been an accident.
She takes a moment to catch her breath. Maybe she was taking my words to heart, because within a minute she had her game face on. Her eyes dried and her face less hurt. The streams must have ran out of water.
I head back to my very own car to check on the tiny leprechaun. I needed to warn him that we were going to be here for a little while so to hide until the cops are finished with the scene. When I get back to the car Ailis is sitting on the floor rubbing his head.
"Are you okay?" I whisper jumping into the driver's seat as I watch the girl out of my rear view mirror. I hoped she didn't see me talking to 'myself'.
"Yeah, waaat de 'eck is wrong wi' 'er?" Ailis gripes as he continues to rub the spot on his head. I chuckle to myself lightly glancing at her again. She was so young, and probably rather inexperienced with driving. I didn't want this to have to go on her record.
"She is young, she is new to driving, anything else you need to know?" I mumble thinking through what had just happened. I knew a speeding ticket could get a license taken away, I wonder what an accident like this would do to the poor girls record. I quickly jumped out of the car not waiting for Ailis to respond. Walking back to her window I was thankful she wasn't on the phone anymore.
"Did you learn your lesson? About how dangerous it is to drive?" I question a hot gooey liquid puddles on my forehead. She nods rapidly as if she was scared of me. I shake my head before heading back to the car.
I took my seat in the driver's chair before picking Ailis up off the ground. I could hear the sirens in the background.
"How much magic do you have?" I question the tiny leprechaun.
"You are cuttin it close," He looks up to me, his red hair falling just above him eyes. He blinks a few times before his eyes light up like he realized what I was thinking.
"I wish this didn't happen, but she remembered what it felt like and pays better attention while driving," I thought of my sentence making sure I had everything covered before I allowed him to make the wish. The cops were getting closer and I knew we needed to get out of here before they got here or else we wouldn't be able to get out of it.
"Are you sure," Ailis leaned against the door. I nod my head.
"Yes I'm sure, make the wish," I glance at the girl who had started crying again. My pep talked seemed to have worn off. I felt bad for her but soon things would be better.
Ailis stands on the seat beside me grabbing the green dust from his pockets as she threw it on the seat in front of him. A small puff of dust enters the air as he starts messing with it, wrapping it into a ball of glowing green. Soon enough a green hue begins to take over everything as tiny green fleks land on the dash of my car. I could feel my eyes growing heavy as I thought of the magic taking over my body. I said a silent prayer that this wouldn't backfire on me before I gave in to the haze. Drifting off to a nothingness. My heart warm with the thought that I had helped the girl all while still letting her learn her lesson.
