- Chapter 15 -
I sit at the computer desk scouring over the homework assignments for this week. They all seemed to be due Friday morning. Unfortunately for me it was Thursday night. I had been so busy wedding planning and running around with either Nathan or Ailis that I wasn't able to get any of my assignments done.I let out an annoyed sigh glancing over at the leprechaun sleeping soundly on my pillow. I really shouldn't get too mad at him. Even if he did rip up the note from Nathan. He is probably right, it would have been super awkward to read a note confessing his love when we haven't even gone on a third date. Now I was able to carry on with him without feeling super weird about things.
Ignorance is bliss, and in this case, it was the best thing that could have happened.
I searched through my notes I had taken in class one more time. There was no way I was going to be able to get all of this done by tomorrow. My teacher wanted an eleven page research paper. Here I was staring at a blank computer screen. I didn't even have a title. I smack my forehead. I should have started on this ages ago. Monday would have been nice, the day we had gotten it I should have gotten a huge head start.
Yet here I was, staring mindlessly at the white screen. It wasn't like me to procrastinate things. I was the student that had the summer reading list as quickly as possible so I wouldn't have to deal with it. Ailis had really messed with my life, and that was necessarily a bad thing, but stuff like this couldn't happen. I glance at the snoozing leprechaun once more.
I try my best to put all of my focus into my paper. I needed to at least come up with a topic. The assignment was to write about anything in particular. I glanced at the creature sleeping for the third time. Maybe I could write about him? Maybe I could study how he has acted so far and use it as a hypothesis statement. What it would be like if leprechauns actually existed. I snickered to myself at the thought of that. Writing a what if report on something that I knew actually did exist.
Glancing at the computer once again I began looking up articles about leprechauns. I wanted to get as much history on them as I could for this assignment. I had to have enough information to fill eleven pages. Maybe if I woke Ailis up he would be able to help me. I shook my head not wanting to bother him. I would have to figure this out all by myself. Maybe I would ask him early in the morning if I was still having problems with it.
As I began typing in my word document the world seems to slow around me. My fingers glide across the keyboard as a ridiculous pace but the computer seemed frozen, the second hand on the clock had stopped, and the tv images were frozen on the screen. The world had completely stopped except for myself and Ailis.
"Ailis," I tried to get his attention, turning in my chair. The atmosphere felt weird, the air seeming thick and almost intoxicating. I could almost see stars forming on the ceiling as I lean back in the chair my neck not strong enough to hold my head up anymore. "Ailis, what is going one!" I shout, forceful enough for him to wake up. He rolls over jumping up from where he was sleeping as he looking around the room.
"Oh no, I'm not ready yet!" He gripes as green specs began filling the room until everything went black.
As the haze begins to fade I found myself standing behind a podium. A bright light shining on my face blindingly.
"Please state your name for the records," A loud booming voice echoes, my skin crawling as I try to find anything that shows me where I am. I stutter, my lower lip quivering. I wasn't sure I could get any words out if I had wanted to. I search around me, Ailis stands behind his own podium just the right height for his short legs.
"Answer them," He whispers, leaning over the fence. It seemed like we were floating on clouds. My legs shaking under the weight of my body.
"Emerson..." I whimper, my words weaker than I had hoped they would be. I wanted to come off as strong, no matter what situation I was in but this was just too much for me. I shook my head trying to get rid of the throbbing feeling. I really needed to stop blacking out so much.
"Last name?" The loud voice booms once again. The clouds seemed to part and shiver under the vocal strength of the stranger.
"Delano..." I manage to squeak out the words stuck in my throat. I needed a glass of water or something to get through this. "Ailis what is going on here," I whisper the best I can towards the tiny creature standing at ease next to me. Sure he was used to this magical stuff, but I was freaking out.
"Today we are here for the assessment of Ailis PUTMYNAMEHERE, this is for the assignment with Emerson Delano. You may have a seat," Little creatures scurry behind us as they bring us chairs. The mouse like creatures disappear after dropping of the seat. I shake my feet a little terrified one of them might be lurking around.
I quickly drop into the chair slightly relieved to not stand anymore on the floating pedestal. Soon the lights began to fade away and the voice comes closer. Or at least what I assume is the voice. A row of creatures come forth all dressed in black cloaks. They all held gavel like hammers in front of them. My eyes dance across the creatures. They were all different shapes and sizes, one was tall and really thin, the other short. The one next to him was a medium build but rather round. I tried taking everything, but it felt like I was on trial for something I knew nothing about. Was I getting in trouble for trying to write a paper about leprechauns? I didn't want to go down for that, I will pick a new idea, a new topic, anything to get me out of here alive.
"Hush tiny girl, we aren't going to hurt you," A creature that looks somewhat like a snake bends down in their chair leaning over the edge as they hiss the words towards me. I cower in response to the sudden outburst. I hadn't meant to alarm them.
"How did you know..." I questioned. The creature in the middle slams his gavel down on the table.
"We all can read your mind to make sure you are telling us the truth," He whispers pulling his gavel back towards them. My heart races because even though it was a whisper it was still louder than my loudest scream.
"Let's carry on with this," The tall slender one on the edge interjects, his fingers long and skinny as he brushes out his hair. Or lack of hair. The white fluff laying gently on the side of his head like a fluffy cloud.
"Ailis," I watch the tiny leprechaun perk up in his seat, his back straight as a board.
"Yes sir," He mumbles waiting for whatever they had to say to him. My heart was racing. I had no clue what was going on and if we would make it out of here alive.
"How do you think you are doing on this current assignment?" The snake like creature slithers again, tugging at the glasses hanging just off the bridge of his nose. Ailis shakes his head for a moment and I can see his fingers are trembling. Why was he so nervous? The more nervous he got, the more frightened I was at the situation.
"I think things are going well sir," He mumbles looking around the room for any sign of his friends.
"Can we get rid of the smoke and the black background. It seems to be startling our students too much," The shorter of the three leans forward speaking into his mic as a whisper. Soon the black begins to fade into what looks like your average courtroom. The smoke that surrounds me dissipates showing me the floor beneath me. My muscles so tired from shaking were finally able to relax, if only slightly.
The three creatures all tap the papers in their hands lightly on the desk in front of them as if they were trying to find their spot once again. I notice Ailis relaxes in his seat slightly and I find myself doing the same thing. Was time stopped for everyone back home? Was I on another planet? How did I get here and when would I be able to go home?
"Alright Ailis, so you have stated that you think things are going well with Emerson, would you like to infer why this is so?" The tall slender creature places his hands gently on the desk in front of him. He sits, exposing his full height to the two of us. His head feet above the other two.
"No sir, I just think they are going well. She is very easy to work with," At this point Ailis is out of his chair, his hands folded together as if he was embarrassed. He fiddles with his feet rocking back on forth.
"Emerson, do you think things are going as well as Ailis thinks they are?" The snake like creature looks to me for an answer. My heart freezes once again. Could someone else please ask the question? He terrified me the most.
"Yes..." I stutter, taking a deep breathe I try to regain my voice so I could actually speak. But what was I going to say? "Yes, Ailis has been a big help and we are currently working on everything we've ruined. Well, that isn't much. It's just one thing, but it'll be taken care of. I'd say he is doing well," I turned to look at Ailis as he smacks his forehead. I shrug my shoulders. What did he want me to say, he knew I rambled when I was nervous.
"What has Ailis messed up?" The shortest of the three speaks now, his voice less harsh.
"I didn't do enough research sir, I'm sorry. This is all on me, she wished for her fathers return and well, I didn't know he was passed. I'm saving up my gold to return everything to the way it was," Ailis looks down as he speaks. His voice quivering as well. Was that really that bad? He would be able to fix it right?
"Yet again you fail to read the food document given to you about your assignments. Ailis this is your final warning, do your research and read the knowledge given to you, you've made this more difficult than it needs to be and honestly we are sick of it," The creatures all look between each other as they wait for a response. "You are going to fail this assignment if you don't get your act together,"
My heart stopped at the sound of Ailis failing his assignment. Much like I was going to if I didn't get back to my room here soon. I still had eleven pages to write.
"Don't worry about that silly assignment, your pages will be done when you get home," The snake one slithers once again. I look at him confused at how he knew that and he just points at his head. Have they been listening in to everything I've been thinking about? I get my response when he nods his head giving me a stern look like I needed to be careful.
"Sir no, please don't fail me again," Ailis begs, his hands clutching the edge of his jacket. "I'm nothing without my leprechaun powers,"
"You have a week and a half left, figure it out," With that the creature in the middle slams his gavel on the table.
