- Chapter 10 -
I woke up Monday morning with hunger growing in my stomach. I was back in my dorm room after a weekend well spent with my mother weeping on the couch about my father's death. The tiny creature I had grown accustomed to having around had been gone since Friday night, when I had originally found out about my father's passing. Something felt strange today about waking up and heading to my classes without him. I roll over in my bed, grabbing my phone off the desk next to me before checking it for messages. There was just one.
'Do you want a ride to school today?'
Nathan was so sweet thinking about me. I quickly respond back to him with a yes before pulling the sheet away from my skin. I needed to take a quick shower if I was going to look half decent today. Once I was out of the shower I stood staring at myself in the mirror. My thoughts wondering to where the tiny green creature had gone. There was no sign he had returned here this weekend while I was at my mother's house. There was no sign anything had been fixed with my fathers death. Was Miles still non-existent in my mother's eyes?
I pull the towel closer to my skin as I lean forward looking in the mirror. The blue in my eyes seemed more gray than normal scaring me slightly. I quickly pull out my makeup bags looking for anything to help liven my skin up. Grabbing my concealer I dab it under my eyes and on a few spots on my face. That will have to do for now. I kept trying to make my makeup look as good as the night of Nathan and I's first date, but there was nothing in my bag that could possibly stand next to magic.
"Damn where is that leprechaun when I need him?" I stopped for a moment thinking back to the night when I had first met him. Didn't he mention I only got three wishes? I shook my head trying to remember what the rules were. Had I wasted too many of my wishes already. Did I only have one wish left to make everything right? Here I was complaining about my makeup when I could have possibly ruined my mothers life.
"Ailis, if you can hear me please come," I whisper into the silence pausing for just a moment to see if anything would happen. It didn't. A little disappointed I began working on the rest of my makeup, doing the best I could to highlight my eyes in a way that would make them look more alive.
Grabbing some close out of my closet and placing them on my bed I glanced around the room once again. I realized I had never made a bed for him here in my dorm room. He had one at my house but that wasn't where I would be spending most of my nights. Shuffling through some of my towels I found a few that were large enough for his tiny body but not too big that it would overwhelm him. Placing them on the desk beside my bed I created him a little makeshift home.
"Make a home and they will come," I whispered to myself waiting yet again for anything to happen, but yet again I was met with silence. There had to be a way I could get Ailis back. There must be something that connected the two of us so I would be able to call him to me, no matter where I was. If only there was a rule book or a piece of paper that told me all I needed to know-- I froze. That was it.
I searched through all the papers laying on my desk by the door. There must be something in the scroll I had signed that would help me. Finally my fingers graze over the soft textured paper. Pulling it from under the books it was hidden I held it high in the air so I could read it.
I ... Ailis, hereby understand that my duties and requirements for this assignment is to do all I must to please the daine I am assigned. This means granting any wish they could possibly have, no matter the size. I must teach the daine all they need to know about life.
If I shall fail to succeed on my final attempt of this assignment I will lose all magical abilities forever more.
No spells or wishes may be granted revolving someone's feelings of love.
No spells may kill anyone or bring them back from the dead.
No spells may exceed the magic the leprechaun currently possesses. Leprechauns are responsible to work and earn their gold.
I Emerson, will allow ailis to help me. If he ever were to go missing I will click my tongue three times, whisper his name and close my eyes. This will bring him back to my side.
I read the words carefully. That seems like kind of a strange way to call someone. Dropping my jaw slightly I practice a few clicking noises before deciding to attempt a call. I let out a quick breath as I watched carefully around the room. Was I sure he wasn't here? The weekend had been long without his antics. What if he had changed to words to trick me so I would look like an idiot trying to call.
That sounded like something Ailis would do.
Finally I allowed myself to fall to his game. I was going to try to summon him. I read over the scroll on last time before clicking my tongue. The noise echoes through the dorm room like a firework, startling me slightly. I quickly click twice more.
"Ailis," I whisper closing my eyes immediately after.
Nothing. The room was silent. I let out a huff before trying once again. Maybe I didn't click fast enough, or maybe I whispered his name too softly.
After following the steps one more time I stood in the silence. Why wasn't he coming? I collapse on my bed out of frustration. Where did he go? Why had he been gone for so long? I never would have thought I would have missed him this much.
Closing my eyes, I rub tiny circles on my temples allowing for myself to calm down. I needed to think about how i was going to manage without him. I was already panicked about my makeup and now my mother is forever going to be alone and it was all my fault. I could feel my eyes welling up when a sound finally began to stir in the distance.
A couple of chimes muffled through the silence as the voices got closer.
"Why ya outta do that?" A creature's voice echoes and my eyes snap open. That wasn't Ailis. My head shoots off the bed as I scurry back to get away from the noise. A tiny round table floats in the middle of the room as tiny creatures whirr around. Little fairy like creatures look around the room trying to figure out where they are. Tapping on the shoulders of the members interested in the game they were playing.
Ailis sat on the stool leaning forward. This cards in front of him held closely to his face as he inspects the numbers. His eyes flicking from the cards to the chips in the middle. Was he playing poker?
"Why chucker yer 'av ter play loike such an eejit," Ailis gripes to the creature sitting across from him. A goblin looking creature sits opposing me staring like there was a glass window and I was invisible. Ailis was so hard to understand and I wasn't really paying enough attention to attempt translating his words. The goblin begins to cackle as a low noises bellows from deep in his chest.
"Ailis, dat is de worst tink yer cud ever say ter me," The red headed creature watches carefully as the other creatures peer over their cards. I had no clue what they were mumbling about.
"Oi, Rumpie," Ailis leans forward placing the cards down on the table as If he hadn't noticed he was somewhere completely different.
"Arrgh!!" The other creatures groan as Ailis cards sit delicately spread out on the green felt. A little part of me wanted to cheer for Ailis as it looked like he won, but the other part of me wanted to march over there and pull him right out of his chair. That was the part that I decided to go with.
I quickly fumbled with the sheets of my bed as I made my way towards the creatures hovering in my dorm. The fairies all scattered as they saw me coming. The other creatures didn't even stir. Swooping my hand towards the red headed demon I pick him up with one quick movement. Holding him high in the air so that we were eye level. His tiny fits fumble and stretch through the air as he tries to attack whatever has grabbed him. His feet kicking so fast it was like he was trying to swim through a rough ocean current.
"'ey! let me down, yer canny 'ames wi' me durin' me poker!" Ailis shouts as he continues to fight an imaginary threat. Finally once he spins around in my hand so he hand see me his hands drop to his sides. "Oh..." He sinks his head dangling like a sad child who knew he was in trouble.
"Ailis 'as a babysitter," The other creature that Ailis had called Rumpie earlier whispers to the goblin in the middle. Ailis's face turns a bright red as he tries to turn his body to look at the other two. He was definitely the smallest of the three magical beings in my dorm, but clearly the most feisty.
"Rumplestiltskin!" Ailis growls in a low voice as he brings his fists back up to a fighting positions.
Rumplestiltskin places his hands up in the air as he flicks a piece of straw out of his face. His hair was a matted mess of thin aged hair filled with straw for thickness. He smelled awful as he held his arms in the air.
I quickly set Ailis down on the chair he had been sitting on earlier. He nods his head to me before jumping on top of the poker table. He uses his feet as broom as he sweeps all the pokers chips of the end of the table and onto my floor. They clatter against each other as he finally cleans the table.
"Oi won fair an' square an' nigh oi nade yer ter make dees into gauld," Ailis gripes as he points his finger in Rumple's face. Rumple shakes his head chewing on the straw dangling from his mouth.
"As If!" He spat, folding his arms over his chest. Leaning back in the seat Ailis bent forward just enough to place his hand gently on his shoulder. With little effort Ailis was pushing Rumple's chair, until Rumple was flailing his arms back and forth waiting for him to stop, but Ailis never did.
Finally the chair gave out and both Rumple and the wooden seat toppled over until they fell from their pedestal. Soaring through the sky I winced as they plumet for the ground. I couldn't pull my eyes away though as he fell. Like a car accident I was glued to the scene.
Rumple tumbles through the air for what feels like hours but couldn't have been more than two seconds. The floor opens up below him and he falls into what looks like a warp hole. My body was confused as the creature disappeared. Where had Ailis sent him? Was he going to be okay? My head started to feel light as the magic filled the room.
"Ailis!" I shout as I began to fall backgrounds onto the bed I had been laying on.
