Chapter Five: On My Own

'The forest floor flew beneath my paws. I was aware that branches cut into my pelt, but I felt nothing. All I was aware of was following the trail as fast as I could. The scent trail was leading me to the river. I could hear it roaring viciously as I approached. Adrenaline pumped through my veins. The lynx could have snuck off with a pup during the excitement. At the river, I saw nothing. Then I heard a yelp. With a bounding leap, I threw myself behind the boulders that rested by the river. I saw the fur of a pure white wolf raised on edge. Teeth flashing. The lynx was creeping up on a female wolf who had been backed against the boulder. She had nowhere to turn to. I threw myself in between them before the lynx could even realize I was there. Before he could react, his neck was clenched between my jaws. He had the chance to swipe at me once, tearing open a gash on my shoulder, and then I felt the life leave his body. His pelt fell limp in my jaws. I threw his body to the ground, spitting his sour blood from my teeth. The female wolf was shaking. When she saw me watching her, she forced herself to stand upright. A wolf can not show fear. I recognized her. I had seen her face before, but I had no clue from where. She looked, much to my suprise, angry.

"Don't tell anyone about this," she spat. "You found it hiding in a cave -alone."

I expected appreciation, a thank you at least. All I had recieved for saving her life was a chastising. I say nothing.

With a flick of her moon-colored tail, the female darts out of the cave and dissapears through the underbrush. I'm sure I could chase her down if I wanted, but I let her go. There is a strange feeling making my fur stand on edge. There had to be a reason she was here. She must have been hiding something, but what.

I scoop the lynx into my mouth. He is much smaller than I thought. Even I am small, and he is three times smaller

than me. Dragging his body across the forest floor, I make my way back to the camp. I should be proud; I've saved someone's life. Instead, I am dishearted. I try to focus on the fact that I am back in the game. Taking this kill back to the werewolves will make me a hero too. It will ensure my place as a soldier.

It's then, when I am halfway back to main camp, that I relize where I recongized the female werewolf. Usually I see her in human form, but there is no mistaking her voice, or her eyes.

She is the king's daughter.
