Lemmy & Ozzy

When someone says Heavy Metal, two men pop up into the minds of people: Lemmy Kilmister and Ozzy Osbourne. Both have made a boundless contribution to Heavy Metal. Lemmy Kilmister was the Bassist and Lead Vocalist of Metal band Motörhead from 1975 to his death in 2015 .Ozzy Osbourne was the Lead Vocalist of Black Sabbath as well as a solo artist from 1968 to this day. Both these men are known for living the Rock N Roll lifestyle to the letter and taking things to the extreme. Lemmy and Ozzy are not only the personification of Heavy Metal, but the personification of Rock N Roll itself.

What Lemmy and Ozzy both share in spades was they're hard living, Rock N Roll lifestyle. Both were notorious for their excessive drug and alcohol consumption. In Watchmojo's Top 10 Musicians Who Surprisingly Didn't Die From Drugs, Lemmy was placed at #5, due to his consumption of Speed and Acid and"drinking a bottle of whiskey each day"(Watchmojo, 2013) till the day he died of cancer at the age of 70. In that same list, Ozzy Osbourne was placed at #3 due to his almost legendary high consumption of drugs and alcohol. It's a miracle that Ozzy is still alive from all the drugs he did. In his autobiography, Ozzy himself is amazed by the fact that he's alive by saying "there's no plausible medical reason why I should still alive."(Osbourne, 2011) This basically shows that even Ozzy himself is amazed at the fact that he's still alive despite all the drugs and alcohol he consumed in his lifetime. Nothing can be taken away of both Lemmy and Ozzy's very Rock N Roll lifestyle.

Lemmy and Ozzy's path of Heavy Metal in contrast to each other, but the origin of their respective paths are similar. Lemmy was once the bassist and vocalist for the Space Rock band Hawkwind from 1971 to 1975. The band was known was for their consumption of psychedelic drugs such as Marijuana, Lemmy however was into Speed and Cocaine. Eventually, after being arrested at the Canadian border, Hawkwind fired Lemmy. In Mick Wall's definitive biography of Lemmy, he calls Lemmy "a conglomeration of some wildly out of control personalities"(Wall, 2016), which was what led Lemmy to being fired from Hawkwind. After being fired from Hawkwind, Lemmy would form the now legendary Metal band Motörhead, which he would continue to play with till the day he died. Ozzy Osbourne's path began at the Black Sabbath: the pioneer of Heavy Metal. From 1968 to 1979, Ozzy was part of the peak of Sabbath's success. But tensions with bandmates and Ozzy's substance abuse lead to his firing. In his autobiography, Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi gave Ozzy an ultimatum which was basically said "do something or we have to replace you"(Iommi, 2011). After being fired from Sabbath, Ozzy would go on tohave a successful solo career. What was different with both Lemmy and Ozzy's path was that Ozzy would eventually reunite with Sabbath while Lemmy would never play with Hawkwind. Both men felt hurt by being fired from the bands they were a part of. In his autobiography, Lemmy describes that he got his revenge by stealing his equipment, but was caught by a member of the band. But as he drove off, Lemmy shouted "goand ask your wife" (Lemmy, 2004). Lemmy had a very interesting way of getting revenge. In Ozzy's autobiography, he writes that "I'd be lying if I said that I didn't feel betrayed".(Osbourne, 2011). But everything, worked out for Ozzy in the end.

In conclusion, Lemmy and Ozzy Osbourne were very alike in regards to their drug and alcohol consumption. They path that both of these men led were very different but were started in a similar manner. To say that they're legends is a huge understatement. Lemmy and Ozzy are Titans of Heavy Metal. Without them, Metal would not be the same.Whether it was Motörhead's 40 years of hell raising or Ozzy's outrageous onstage antics, both men have left a lasting impact on Metal music. Lemmy lived by one motto: born to lose, live to win. That could be applied to Ozzy. Lemmy and Ozzy are larger than life figures that won't be forgotten anytime soon.
