The Great Wall Race
"Jiang! You gotta come and see this!" MK yelled from the shop area. "Coming!" Jiang called out as she finished wrapping the bandages around her foot. She had a bit of a bad sprain from something she was doing a couple days ago.
It was starting to get better, but it still hurt to walk. Heading down the stairs, Jiang came into the shop just in time to hear that the prize for this year's Great Wall Race would be immortality. "No way! A peach of immortality?!" She cried along with MK and Mei.
"A peach of what now?" Pigsy asked. He immediately got offended gasps from all three young adults, and both MK and Mei started blabbering. Tang cleared his throat, which made the two shut up and everyone look over at him, where he had his book opened in front of him.
"Legend says there's a sacred field of trees that grow in the heavenly realm, protected by the gods themselves. Every few thousand years, these trees bring forth the the peaches of immortality. Against the wishes of the heavenly host, the Monkey King took them all, making himself immortal" Tang explained. "Hold up, I thought Monkey King was already immortal?" Pigsy said. "Pigy, your missing the point! Whoever wins this race will live forever!" Mei cried.
"Think about it Jiang! How great would that be?!" MK called out, staring at his sister. "Eh, I don't think you want to know my answer" Jiang replied, looking off to the side. Yes, being immortal would be nice, but then you'd also get to see all your friends and family die, and live in, never being able to see or talk to them again.
Yeah, to be honest, Jiang would rather have mortality than not be able to see her family and friends ever again when they did eventually pass on. "Jiang, we're entering the race!" MK cried. "Uh, I'd love to, but, um..." Jiang answered before trailing off, aiming both hands at her injured foot.
"So, then just get a ride that doesn't have gas pedals. Get something like I have" Mei said as she went outside to clean her motorcycle. "I don't even know how to actually ride those things!" Jiang argued as she followed her and her brother outside. "Uh, the second time we went up against DBK?" MK asked.
"Spur of the moment and adrenaline rush" Jiang replied. "The motorcycle that you have parked outside your apartment complex?" Mei told her. "Isn't actually mine. It was given to me by a friend before she left the city" Jiang said as she leaned against the wall outside the shop, crossing her injured leg over her uninjured one and crossing her arms.
Both young adults in front of her groaned. "Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is, the more people we have in that race, the more of a chance we have of winning!" MK said with a bright smile. "Then those other racers won't stand a chance!" He added.
"Right?! I know the alleys like the back of my hand. The back alleys, the front alleys, the sideways alleys, all the alleys! I was made for this!" Mei cried. "Yup, I'm totally going to win this thing" MK said, brushing a hand through his hair. "Wait, what? Your not racing. Me and Jiang are racing" Mei said before she hopped down from her motorcycle.
"You've been watching me train for months, this should not be a surprise" she added, stopping when she was right in front of MK. "Oh, uh, yeah. I just thought you were doing that stuff for me" the boy replied. Jiang pursed her lips.
Bad move MK. Mei gave him the scariest death glare Jiang had ever seen her give. "But, upon reflection, yep, that doesn't make much sense" MK said before falling backwards.
"How do you even, ugh, there is no way you'd beat me" Mei said, which made MK stand up. "Uh, I so too could beat you. I'm a delivery boy! Pretty sure I know how to drive real good" he said. "And only reason Jiang isn't joining is because she knows we could easily leave her in the dust" he added.
"Nuh uh, don't try brining me into your BS" Jiang called out, scrolling through something on her phone. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Mr. Tang come out of the shop, and the two competing young adults pounced on him. "Mr. Tang, who's the better driver? Mei, or me?" MK asked before gasping as he saw the mini flag Tang was holding.
It had Mei's face on it. "This is very uncomfortable" Tang said before he darted off, making Jiang chuckle. "Okay, Jiang, since you said you weren't going to race, who is the-" MK said, turning to his sister, stopping when she held up a hand.
"Like I said, don't bring me into your competition. But if you must know, I think your both equally good. So, I'll be cheering the both of you on from the stands" she said, smiling as she heard MK groan. Slipping her phone into her pocket, Jiang went back inside. "Hey Pigsy? Can I have some of what Tang was having earlier? It looked really good and I can't cheer on my friends on an empty stomach" she said, placing a few bills down on the counter.
Pigsy took the money and went into the kitchen to make the dish. "At least you actually pay for it" he said as he came back a few minutes later with a steaming bowl in his hands, making Jiang smile as she took the dish and pulled out a packet of chopsticks. "Do you always keep those on ya?" Pigsy asked.
"Hmm? Oh these? Yeah, never know when these might break, so I always carry around a few spares" Jiang explained, pointing to the chopsticks that held her hair in place before she began to eat. After that, and after a bit of a wait, she stood among the crowd at the starting line. She had her phone out with the group chat between her, MK and Mei opened up because the two had begged her to send color photos for who passed each check point first.
Mei's color would be green, MK's would be yellow. Jiang looked up as MK came out onto the track and almost facepalmed at the sight of the delivery car. She was too far away to hear what the two were saying, but she could guess from their facial expressions.
"Oh man, not these bozos again" she muttered when she caught sight of Jin and Yin. She still held a pretty sizeable grudge against them for trapping her and her brother in the Calabash. I mean, who wouldn't?
At least she had the staff with her. So if they did start anything while she was around, she could help out an end to it. However, things started changing as Red Son, followed by DBK, pulled up, which made a lot of the other racers leave the track.
Then, she heard Jin and Yin take off as the commentators. "This, is going to be one interesting race" Jiang sighed. And interesting it was when Jin and Yin revealed that they altered the race track.
At that news Jiang could see panic unfold on Mei's face, and when the trickster demons shouted 'go', DBK and Iron Fan immediately overtook everyone who was in the race. Jiang quickly made a spur of the moment decision. She hopped into the track, and before Mei took off, she hopped on, holding to the back of the motorcycle.
"Wha-Jiang?!" Mei cried. "Just go!" Jiang snapped. Mei gave a light shrug and took off.
During the race, DBK literally began to drive through the mountain, putting the edge on everyone else. "Out of my way Noodle Boy!" She heard Red Son insult MK. "Aww. Is someone upset that their stuck at the back up the pack?" Jiang called out with a smile.
"What, Jiang?!" MK cried, thoroughly surprised to see his sister on Mei's motorcycle. "I decided to say screw it when I saw the Demon Bull Family join. See you boys at the finish line!" Jiang cried before Mei hit the gas, zooming ahead. She was the first one to pass the first checkpoint, so, she sent a green colored square out into the group chat with one hand while the other held on the the back of the motorcycle.
However, she soon noticed a strange speck in the sky that seemed to be getting bigger. Then, she realized it was MK. "Mei, look out!" She screamed as she held on to Mei.
The girl didn't speed up fast enough, and MK crashed into the two. That, created a nice sized crash sight, which she heard Jin and Yin comment on. They almost sounded like they were sorry for the group.
"Oh shut up you two!" Jiang called out as she pulled herself out of the wreckage. Then, she put a bit of weight on her injured foot, and almost cried as she dropped down to hold it. She had definitely injured it even more.
Bracing herself on a large piece of metal, she got herself back up on her good foot, holding her injured one up. Right then, Red Son drove by, calling out "Victory is mine peasants!" before letting a burst of maniac laughter as he drove off. Jiang sighed before looking over and sighing as she saw Mei dig herself out.
Jiang braced herself for the yelling she knew would quickly follow. "MK! What do you do?!" Mei snapped before spotting her wrecked bike. "My bike! Ugh! What is wrong with you?! I thought you were my friend!" She shouted, stomping up to MK.
Jiang spotted the staff on the ground and made it extend a bit so that she could use it to support herself. "Okay, I did bad! It's just, I really wanted that peach and, I guess I got carried away. And you guys know how much I love stone fruit" she heard MK say. "I was never going to win though. Your the racer, not me. I'm sorry" MK added.
"Yeah, I know, just, don't be dumb next time, okay?" Mei said, gently punching MK's shoulder. Which essentially meant that she forgave him, which made Jiang sigh with a smile. "All I can do is try!" MK cried before he let out a short sigh.
"I can't believe Red Son is going to win" he said. Mei and Jiang exchanged a look before they glanced over at the wreckage. "Well, MK, me and you do have Monkey King powers" Jiang said.
"Huh? Ohhh, yeah!" MK said as he caught on. Mei came over to support Jiang so she could had off the staff to MK, who then slammed it into the ground, macking all the pieces fly up and combine into a large and very fast car. "You know, Jiang, I think it's time for you to show us how good a driver you are" Mei said before helping the girl over to to driver's seat.
"Alright. But you two had better hang on to something" Jiang replied as she got comfortable. "Oh please, it's not like-" MK said before he broke off with a scream as Jiang floored the gas pedal. MK and Mei both let out small screams while Jiang let out a chuckle that broke into a laugh.
"Woo-hoo!" She cried with a smile. However, that disappeared when she crashed into Red Son's car, but with the Monkey King powers, MK put their vehicle back together, with an addition. Red Son literally growled as flames began to fill the place.
But, with the press of a button, he was ejected from the vehicle, and Jiang slammed on the gas pedal, speeding up and crossing the finish line, which lit up the second she had crossed it. Then she quickly slowed to a stop as realization dawned on the group. They, a couple of young adults, one being injured, had just won The Great Wall Race.
"Oh my gods. We just won!" Jiang cried as everyone started celebrating. Getting out of the vehicle, and being supported on either side by her best friend and brother, Jiang, MK, and Mei all got to the winner's platform, where they were presented with the golden peach of immortality. All three winners had a hand on it as they all raised the fruit over their heads while the crowds cheered on for them.
Until someone ruined the moment for them. "Noodle Boy! Random Girl! Your both insufferable. That peach should be mine!" Red Son cried. "Ha! Your never getting this fruit!" MK responded, holding the peach close to himself.
"MK! Wait!" Jiang cried, too late as her brother took a bite. Well, tried to. He ended up cracking a tooth and held his mouth while Jiang caught the peach, which he had thrown into the air in favor of holding his mouth.
"I thought this felt a little heavier than it should have been" she said, sharing a look with Mei before looking over the fruit, which was actually just a golden sculpture of a peach fruit. "Guys, it's just a trophy, we don't really get a peach of immortality" Mei said, taking the trophy from Jiang. "What?! B-but-" MK said as he and Red Son pulled out the flyers for the race.
"It says right here on the poster" Red Son started to say before the two were cut off by Mei and Jiang's laughter. "If you guys had actually properly read those things, you would have known that the winners get immortality by having their picture projected on the Great Wall" she said. After she spoke, the moment MK tried taking a bite of the trophy showed up with Mei staring at him like he was going crazy and Jiang looking like she was about to burst out in laughter.
"Oh, so the peach, is a metaphor? Oohhhkay" MK said. "I knew that! You think your so-ugghh!" Red Son shouted before disappearing in a ball of flames again. He reappeared on the race street and shouted, "Peasants!" before walking away.
"Wait, but, what about the real peaches? Where are they?" MK asked, looking at Jiang and Mei as they came down. "I don't know" Mei said. But Jiang had a pretty good idea as to where they were.
Though, of course, she would never say her suspicions out loud.
