Game on
"Maybe under here?" MK suggested as he looked under a shelf before groaning when he didn't find what he was looking for. He, Jiang, Mei, and Sandy were all in Monkey King's home on Flower Fruit Mountain, looking around for a something. And as to what it was, no one really knew.
Jiang sighed as she dumped a dirty towel in a laundry basket that was conveniently located in a corner of the room. The living room was a bit of a mess, looking like a bomb had gone off in the place. So, Jiang simply moved a few things around to more suitable places as she searched.
"Ugh, there's gotta be something!" MK cried as Jiang slightly snickered at the sight of Mei putting on a VR headset and looking around. "Remind me what it is we're looking for?" Sandy asked as he dug through a chest. "Is this it?" He asked.
Jiang looked over to see him holding up a toy cube. "No, not even close" she said as MK took the cube and threw it. "I'm trying to find something that will make me and Jiang super super powerful so I can defeat..." He said before trailing off.
Jiang knew who he was talking about. The memories of their time against the LBD still fresh in her mind. "Someone. Anyone. Y'know, to be sure me and Jiang got what it takes to take on the next big bad" MK finished.
"I thought Monkey King was training you with remote lessons?" Sandy asked. "Let's just say we haven't really heard from Monkey King in a while" Jiang said as she sat down on an armrest beside Mei, who now had a controller in hand and was sitting on the couch. Sandy took up the rest of the space on the couch, which startled Mei a bit.
"Yeah, and me and Jiang both already learned all the different lessons the Monkey King of vacations left for us" MK said as he fiddled with the staff, making it change in size before making it tiny. The staff disappeared into his ear as he continued speaking. "I don't know, I just, I feel like me and Jiang are ready for something bigger. More powerful" he said.
Jiang became distracted by the sounding of buttons being pressed, and looked over to see Mei fiddling with the controller. "A wise warrior leads their enemy into their own destruction. What's that mean?" Sandy said then asked, reading off of a scroll. Jiang opened her mouth to answer, but MK spoke before she could.
"It means that I need to be stronger! Be so powerful that it'll be certain to defeat anybody who fights me!" MK cried. "Or maybe it means that you need to beat someone at their own game?" Jiang suggested. "Maybe you need a break little man. Just kick back for a bit" Sandy said.
"Uh, did Monkey King ever take breaks?!" MK cried. "He's literally on vacation right now! Plus, he has logged some serious hours on this game" Mei said, directing everyone to the game logo on the TV screen. "What?" MK asked.
"Uh huh. Like, ten thousand. That's more than you've ever done Jiang" Mei said. "Damn, so he's a serious gamer? Yeah, that's not gonna fly with me" Jiang said, pouting a bit. "No way Monkey King would've wasted time on this" MK said, looking at the TV screen.
Then he gasped. "Unless..." He said. "MK, you can wait your turn. Besides, me and Mei already agreed that I'm up next. Get in line little brother" Jiang said, smirking a bit as MK groaned out of slight frustration.
"But he must've left us this game for a reason!" He pouted. "Or maybe he just forgot to take it with him" Jiang retaliated, taking the headset and controller that Mei handed off to her. "Or maybe it's just a game that Monkey King likes because his face is on the box" Mei said, holding up the box that the game came in.
"Oh, crap, where's the on button?" Jiang asked after she put on the headset. She watched as Mei came up and pressed something on the side of the headset, then the house faded away, giving way to a almost black landscape with a glowing circle that she was standing in. A scan took place, and an automated voice seemed to echo a bit.
Then, the landscape changed again, taking on an older timed village. Jiang was now standing on a stone road. There was a health bar up in the top left hand corner. "Okay, maybe to graphics could use a bit of work" she said, taking a look around.
A chicken came across the road she was standing on, and then it stopped in front of her. It glitched out, died, then disappeared. "Is it true that if Jiang dies in the game, then she dies in real life?!" She heard MK yell, turning her head a bit.
"Absolutely not!" Mei laughed, but Jiang heard her whisper "I, I don't, I don't know!". She was probably talking to Sandy. "You guys do know I can hear over the music, right?" Jiang asked as she looked forward again.
Everyone went silent. "I guess you just, move forward?" MK said after the moment of silence. Jiang fiddled with the buttons, and her character moved forward.
Suddenly her character stopped, and a new character appeared in front of it. Then the screen went black. Coming back into color, Jiang now saw a game version of Wukong.
"Welcome traveller on A Journey to The West" he said. Jiang gave an amused smile as MK fanboyed over the guy. "It's Monkey King! He's in the game!" He cried.
"Though, his character sounds just like him. Did he make this game?" Jiang realized, but, she pressed a button to continue. "As the Great Sage equal to Heaven, you couldn't ask for a better tutor" Wukong's character said. "Yeah, seems like he definitely made this game. Okay game Monkey King, whatcha got for my sister?" MK commented.
"On your journey, you will learn to smite powerful enemies. After you complete the tutorials, you'll learn how to access-" G.Monkey King said before someone pressed the skip button. "Dang it MK! We could have learned some valuable information on how to play this!" Jiang snapped. "Eh, it was taking too long" her brother replied.
Jiang sighed and made her character move on. Then, the tutorials began, which MK again skipped through, much to Jiang's annoyance. "Maybe some of the tutorials from Monkey King would be helpful" Mei said, but MK ignored that, finally getting to the end of the tutorials.
"Congratulations, you now completed the tutorials. This next adventure, is up to you" G.Monkey King said. "Finally. We're done with the tutorials, now we can actually start playing the game" MK said as Jiang came upon the first village. "Oh hey, check it out. An in game store" she said.
Wukong's character appeared again. "Welcome to the Central Temple. Here, wise teachers grant blessings and new abilities" he said. However, Jiang suddenly froze, and her cheeks began to heat up at one of the images.
The in game character was running a finger along the staff. His shirt was torn and was revealing his chest and abdomen. And the smirk and light blush on the character topped everything off.
Just for a second, for some reason, Jiang wished that it had been the actual thing. Her face felt like it was on fire with that thought, and so, she pressed continue. Gods, what was wrong with her?!
"Your alright Jiang? You were staring at that image for a good minute there" she heard Mei say in a teasing voice. "Mei, shut up" she said, entering the temple. She was definitely gonna have some words with Wukong once he got back.
For now, she was distracted from that thought by a new character appearing in front of her. "This is the path to enlightenment young one. Perhaps a blessing for you journey?" The character said. "Whoa, that's a lot of stuff" Jiang said as she scrolled through all of the things.
"Wait, those are all passive abilities! Go into the next area!" MK begged, making Jiang sigh before she did so. "Oo, oo, oo, flaming fists of fury! Get that one!" MK cried. Jiang sighed.
"Alright, but after this, I'm the one making the decisions. Then you can do whatever you like when you have your turn" she said, getting the move. "Deals massive damage while leaving your defenses wide open" she read before moving on. Then, she came upon her first opponents.
"Oh no, Chu Conye has kidnapped the chief's daughter! Someone has to stop him!" G.Monkey King cried. "Yeah, no shit" Jiang commented. "With my legendary nine toothed rake, no one body can stop me!" The pig demon cried.
"Oh, we'll see about that" Jiang said with a light smirk. "Oo, Jiang's getting competitive" Mei said, making Jiang smile. "Just a little bit" she said, holding her thumb and pointer finger close together for a moment.
Then, she performed the flaming fist move, and defeated the demon pig, who looked just a bit like Pigsy. Wukong then appeared. "Nice one! But remember, not every opponent can be beaten with brute strength. Wanna learn a counter attack?" He said.
"Eh, why not?" Jiang said, about to hit the button. Why was she even surprised when MK jumped up and hit a different button. "Bro!" She cried.
"What? That move worked pretty well!" MK defended himself. With a groan of frustration, Jiang moved on to the next opponent. This time, it looked a bit like Sandy. "You shall not pass!" The enemy cried.
"Jeez, Lord of The Rings reference anyone?" Jiang commented, making someone laugh. "The only way to cross Blowing Sand River is by defeating Shou Jing. The spear attacks are deadly, but leave him open to counter attacks" G. Monkey King said. Jiang performed the flaming fist move, and the enemy was defeated.
"Why would there be such a powerful move so early in the game? Kinda makes the rest of it redundant" MK commented. "That was the last of them. Time for the final boss" Jiang commented before her character walked into a cave entrance to a volcano. A cut scene came on, and Jiang watched as the Rhino King was introduced.
"Who dares challenge the Rhino King? I will pulverize you to dust!" The final boss cried. Jiang tried to do the flaming fist move, but it did nothing, and her character was killed. "What?! The flaming fists of fury did nothing! It must be a bug in the game!" MK cried.
Jiang sighed, and hit replay. "Remember, not every opponent can be beaten with brute strength. Wanna learn a counter attack?" G. Monkey King asked again. "Yes. Yes I would" Jiang said, but, again, MK hit skip.
Finally having enough, Jiang jammed the headset on him and shoved the controller in his hands. "...Rude" he said, and Jiang resisted the urge to slap him upside the head, though it took a lot of self control. She watched with pure satisfaction as MK kept dying, slowly getting more and more frustrated with each death.
"This is ridiculous. The Wukong Flaming Fist of Fury is the strongest move in the game. But how am I supposed to use it if that Rhino demon keeps beating the snot out of me before I can execute it?!" He cried, throwing the headset off. "Okay, this looks like a good place to stop. You and Jiang have been playing for thirty two straight hours, with Jiang contributing the most amount of time" Sandy said, shocking Jiang, who checked her phone. Sandy was right.
"Wow, I was so caught up, I didn't even realize how fast time was flying by" she said. "Stop? Now? I just have to try harder. It's just like the Monkey King said. I just need to get stronger!" MK cried. "Except he never said that" Mei told him.
Jiang then remembered what Sandy had read before all this began. "The wise warrior leads their enemy into their own destruction" she recited. "Maybe the strongest move, isn't always the rightest move" Sandy suggested.
"Then what is the rightest move?!" MK cried. "Remember, not every opponent can be beaten with brute strength! Do you want to learn a counter attack?" G. Monkey King said, sounding exasperated. Jiang picked up the headset and controller, and went back to the in game store, scrolling through the passive moves.
"Sometimes, using an enemies strength against them is the strongest move of all. This will leave them open for a counter attack" the monk from the beginning said. "Ready to give it a go?" G.Monkey King asked. "Absolutely" Jiang said as she got the move.
Getting back to the Rhino King, she finally executed the strategy she had been wanting to use. She flipped over the King, which made him hit a wall. Her brother and her friends cheered her on.
Then, Jiang used the flaming fist move with the Rhino King was still dizzy. And she ended up beating the king. A loud explosion made her fling off the headset, and her eyes instantly landed on a large burning hole in the wall.
Then she spotted MK's guilty look. "You know, I wasn't expecting you to actually learn the move buddy" she said. Her gentle and amused time seemed to take MK off the edge.
Later on, everyone worked on patching the home that the boy had made. "So, did you guys learn what you needed to learn?" Sandy asked. "Yeah. That, and then some" Jiang said as she continued to hammer some boards in place.
"You were right Sandy. Sometimes the strongest move isn't always the bestest" MK said, before he tripped backwards onto the couch. "It's the bestest at blowing hole through your stuff though!" Sandy said, making everyone laugh. "Alright. Now it's time for some much needed sleep. After we finish all the repairs and replace the TV" Jiang said.
The time of voice she used made everyone laugh even harder.
