Chapter 5- W

Chief Wheeler watched as Mia expertly evaded the police pursuit, navigating through the city with agility and confidence. He couldn't help but admire her determination and skill behind the wheel, traits he knew well from her father, Duke.

"She's like her dad," Wheeler muttered to himself, a mix of worry and admiration in his voice. He glanced at the officers around him, who were still trying to track Mia's movements.

Just then, Allen's call came through on his radio. "Chief, any news? Have you found her?"

Wheeler hesitated for a moment, then replied, "She's heading towards the old warehouse district. She's a big risk-taker, just like your dad and mom."

Allen sighed with a mixture of concern and pride. "I hope she knows what she's doing."

Meanwhile, Clemmons, who had been anxiously pacing nearby, overheard the conversation. "Where is she?" he blurted out, his voice tinged with worry.

When Wheeler informed him of Mia's whereabouts, Clemmons's anxiety burst out in a loud exclamation, "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Buster, who was reading, looked up from his book and exchanged a glance with Allen. He knew Mia was putting herself at risk to uncover the truth behind their family's ordeal, and he couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with concern for her safety.

Back in the construction site, Mia and Rose remained hidden, watching carefully as the police cars continued their search. Mia's mind raced with thoughts of who could be responsible for the attack on her family and how she could track them down.

"We should move soon," Rose whispered, breaking the tense silence. "They won't give up that easily."

Mia nodded, scanning the area for an opportunity to slip away unnoticed. "Let's give it a few more minutes," she replied quietly, her eyes never leaving the police cars that were still circling the perimeter.

Then, Captain Brennant entered.

" Come out with your appendages raised." He called.

Mia was going to comply, but then something came to her mind that made her smirk.

" But, Captain," She said. " That'll be an 8-560-563. Arresting a police officer. It's in your Volume Three handbook. Page 577, chapter 57, paragraph three."

Captain Brennant paused, clearly taken aback by Mia's unexpected knowledge of police protocols. He glanced at his officers, who were also unsure how to respond to Mia's statement.

"Mia, this is serious," Brennant said, trying to maintain authority. "You're evading arrest and causing a disruption."

Mia remained calm, her smirk fading into a determined expression. "I understand, Captain. But I'm trying to find out who attacked my family. I can't afford to be taken into custody right now."

Brennant hesitated, clearly conflicted. On one hand, Mia was right about the potential violation she cited, but on the other hand, she was evading arrest and complicating their efforts to maintain order.

"Look, Mia," Brennant started, trying to reason with her. "I get that you're upset, but you can't take matters into your own hands like this. Let us handle the investigation."

Mia shook her head firmly. "I appreciate what you're saying, Captain, but I need to do this." Then, she paused.

" Unless you want me to do a 55-465- 576. A-"

Captain Brennant interrupted Mia, a hint of exasperation in his voice. "Yes, I know full well what a 55-465-576 is, Mia, thank you very much."

Mia raised an eyebrow, surprised that Brennant was familiar with such a specific police code he wrote ten years ago. "Oh, you do?" she asked, a mixture of skepticism and curiosity in her tone.

Brennant nodded, his expression serious. "It's the code for unauthorized pursuit of suspects without proper clearance," he explained. "And you quoting police codes doesn't change the fact that you're putting yourself and potentially others at risk by going rogue."

Mia sighed, realizing Brennant wasn't going to back down easily. "Captain, I understand the risks," she said earnestly. "But my family was targeted, and I need to find out who did this. I can't just sit back and wait."

Brennant regarded her for a moment, weighing his options. He knew Mia well enough to understand her determination and how deeply she cared about her family. Despite his reservations, he also respected her passion and commitment to justice.

"Alright," Brennant finally relented, his tone softer. "But I'm coming with you. We do this together, and you follow my lead."

Mia nodded, relieved that Brennant was willing to cooperate. "Thank you, Captain," she said sincerely.

Brennant gestured towards the police car they had emerged from. "Let's get going then," he said, motioning for Mia to precede him.

Mia motioned for Rose, who said, "Captain, do you think you could drive, and not-"

" Too late." Mia said, twirling the keys on her finger.

Rose sighed, and climbed into the car with the Captain.

" You might want to hold on." Rose whispered to the captain.

As Mia took the driver's seat and started the engine, Captain Brennant and Rose exchanged nervous glances. Mia's reputation for bold and unconventional driving was well-known among her friends and family, and they weren't sure what to expect on this impromptu chase.

"Alright, Mia," Captain Brennant said calmly, though his grip on the door handle tightened. "Let's find some clues, but please remember, safety first."

Mia grinned mischievously and winked at Rose. "Buckle up!" she exclaimed, hitting the gas pedal with a burst of acceleration.

The police car shot forward, tires squealing as Mia skillfully maneuvered through the streets. She used alleys, narrow gaps between buildings, and even makeshift ramps formed by debris from the recent incident. Rose clung to her seat, occasionally letting out a nervous laugh as Mia swerved with precision, narrowly avoiding obstacles and oncoming traffic.

At one point, Mia spotted a low-hanging ladder and didn't hesitate. With a confident smirk, she drove the police car straight at it, causing the vehicle to briefly lift off the ground as it ascended the ladder. Captain Brennant gasped in surprise, but Mia's steady hand on the wheel kept them on course.

"Where are we going, Mia?" Rose asked, her voice tinged with a mix of excitement and apprehension.

Mia glanced at her, eyes alight with determination. "We're following the trail of that red car," she replied firmly. "I've got a feeling it's connected to what happened to my family."

The chase continued, taking them through twists and turns that would make even seasoned drivers nervous. Mia's adrenaline fueled her focus, each maneuver calculated to maintain their pursuit without causing harm. They sped through narrow streets, past startled pedestrians, and even up a series of stairs that led to a rooftop parking lot.

"Up there!" Rose exclaimed, pointing to a figure darting across the rooftop ahead.

Without hesitation, Mia accelerated, aiming straight for the edge of the rooftop. The police car soared through the air, landing with a jolt on the adjacent rooftop. Captain Brennant held on tightly, his expression a mix of awe and concern for Mia's daring tactics.

As they closed in on the figure, Mia's mind raced. This was it—the moment to confront whoever was responsible for the attack on her family. She braced herself, ready to leap into action as soon as they reached their target.

"Prepare to take the driver seat, Rose!" Mia called out, her voice firm with resolve.

Rose quickly nodded, already anticipating Mia's command. As Mia brought the police car to a screeching halt, she was already out of the vehicle before Captain Brennant could even utter a question. He watched, a mixture of surprise and admiration on his face, as Mia swiftly retrieved a gun and handcuffs from the car. To his astonishment, she also managed to produce his own ceremonial sword, which he had kept as a memento of his years of service.

"Mia, where did you..." Captain Brennant started, but Mia was already focused on the figure ahead.

Without waiting for an answer, Mia advanced with purpose, her movements fluid and precise. The figure, caught off guard by the sudden arrival and Mia's determined approach, froze momentarily. It was clear they hadn't expected Mia to catch up so quickly, let alone with such a dramatic entrance.

"Stop right there!" Mia commanded, her voice cutting through the tense air.

The figure turned slowly, their face hidden beneath a hood. Mia could sense the tension in the air as the person weighed their options.

"Don't make any sudden moves," Mia continued, her gun held steady. "You're under arrest for the attack on my family."

The figure hesitated for a moment, then slowly raised their hands in surrender. Mia moved forward cautiously, keeping them covered with the gun until she could safely secure the handcuffs.

As Rose caught up, she stood beside Mia, ready to assist if needed. Captain Brennant, still slightly dazed by the rapid turn of events, approached cautiously. His gaze flickered between Mia and the figure, impressed by her quick thinking and courage.

"Mia, how did you..." Captain Brennant began again, but Mia cut him off with a determined look.

"I'll explain later, Captain," she said firmly, her attention focused solely on the suspect. "Right now, we need to get this person back to the station for questioning."

With Rose's help, Mia efficiently handcuffed the suspect and led them back to the police car. Captain Brennant followed closely behind, his mind buzzing with questions and admiration for Mia's bold actions. As they drove back to the station, Mia finally had a moment to catch her breath, her mind racing with the events of the chase and the imminent interrogation ahead.
