Chapter 3

* Lego City Adventure Theme Song Plays*

Mia's eyes snapped open, and she sat up.

" Five in the morning." She mumbled, glancing at her watch. " Not even the mayor is up at this time."

She pushed her blanket off, hit stop on her phone, and ran to the bathroom with her clothes, while trying to maintain quietness.

She padded down the stairs, making sure not to step on the ones that made a creaking noise. She grabbed a granola bar and some coffee.

Which she spit out in a plant.

" Blech!" She whispered. " How does anyone drink this?!"

Mia shook off the bitter taste of the coffee and quickly grabbed a bottle of water instead. She needed to stay sharp for her mission today. After finishing her granola bar, she quietly slipped on her sneakers and grabbed her backpack, which she had packed the night before with essentials: a notebook, pen, flashlight, and a small first aid kit.

She took one last look at her sleeping family. Clemmons was sprawled out with one leg hanging off the bed, Buster was curled up in a ball, and Allen, surprisingly, was sleeping soundly for once. Her parents were snuggled close together, the stress of the previous days momentarily lifted from their faces.

Taking a deep breath, Mia turned and slipped out of the house, determined to find out who was responsible for the accident that had left her family injured.

She looked around the driveway.

The family car was the only car which hadn't been destroyed in the accident.

She sighed, started the engine, and slowly backed out.

When she arrived at the intersection where the crash had occurred, she began to look around carefully. There were still some remnants of the chaos: shattered glass, tire marks, and a few pieces of debris. She took out her notebook and started jotting down observations, hoping something would stand out.

As she inspected the area, a shadowy figure emerged from behind a nearby building. Mia froze, her heart racing. The figure approached slowly, and as they stepped into the light, she recognized them.

"Harl?" she whispered.

Harl Hubbs grinned. "Hey, Mia. Fancy meeting you here."

Mia relaxed slightly. "What are you doing here, Harl?"

"I could ask you the same thing," he replied, still grinning. "But I figured you'd be out here, looking for answers."

Mia looked astonished.

" How did you...." She started, but then stopped.  Harl was practically everywhere, at all times.

" Harl, I just need to ask you a few questions." She said seriously.

" Sure. I'll try to be as helpful as I can!" Harl answered.

Mia smiled softly as she took her notebook and pen out of her bag.

" Were you here during the accident?"

Harl nodded, his expression becoming serious.

" Yup. It happened so fast, you know? One second your family's cruising peacefully, the next a big explosion happens and the ambulances come to take your family."

Mia nodded, but she could feel her heart pounding.

" What time did this happen?"

Harl thought for a few moments.

" Around six in the evening." Then he turned to her. " When did they come home?"

" Eight."

" Two hours in the hospital. I hope it's not serious."

Mia sighed. " Actually, it is. My family can't do their jobs." Mia said, more slower with each word.

Then, she gasped. " The fire department!"

With a " Thanks!" to Harl, she slid into the driver's seat and sped to the firehouse.

Bob was cleaning all the equipment.

Without saying anything, Mia parked the car, rolled out, ran up the stairs, and into Ella's office.

" Ella, is there any fire emergency?!" She practically yelled, throwing on her mother's hat.

Ella sighed.

" There's, like, a cat stuck in a tree, for, like, about five minutes."

Mia nodded.

" Is there anyone on the sight?"

Ella nodded.

Suddenly, the fire alarm went off, and Mia's head snapped to it.

" There's a fire, at, like, the bakery." Ella said.

" I'll go."

" You're not going alone." Bob said, appearing in the doorway.

Mia nodded briskly.

" Prepare the truck." Then, she paused. " And make sure the seat is adjusted to my height."

" You're gonna drive?!" Bob asked, bedwilled.

" Yes."

Bob blinked in surprise but quickly nodded. "Got it, Chief Mia," he said with a hint of a smile.

Mia hurried down to the garage, her mind focused on the task ahead. She couldn't let the bakery burn down, not after everything her family had been through. As she climbed into the driver's seat of the fire truck, she adjusted the mirrors and the seat, making sure she had a clear view of everything.

Bob and a few other firefighters hopped in, securing themselves as Mia fired up the engine. The roar of the truck filled the garage, and Mia felt a surge of adrenaline. She was going to do this right, just like her dad would.

"Ready?" Bob asked, giving her a thumbs-up.

Mia nodded. "Ready."

With a determined look, she hit the siren and the truck roared out of the station, barreling down the street with purpose. She weaved through traffic with the skill and precision she had seen her dad use countless times. The city blurred past as she focused on the road ahead, the siren blaring to clear the way.

Bob and the others held on tightly, impressed by Mia's driving. "She's got the Sinclair touch," one of them murmured, nodding in approval.

As they neared the bakery, they could see smoke billowing into the sky. Mia's heart pounded harder, but she stayed calm. She expertly maneuvered the truck into position, stopping just in front of the burning building.

"Alright, team, let's move!" she shouted, jumping out of the truck. Bob and the other firefighters followed, quickly unrolling hoses and setting up their equipment.

Mia directed them with confidence, her mother's hat perched firmly on her head. "Bob, you take the left side. I'll handle the right. Let's get this fire under control!"

Bob nodded and sprinted to his position. Mia grabbed a hose and aimed it at the flames, the water spraying in a powerful arc. She could feel the heat from the fire, but she didn't flinch. This was her moment to prove herself.

Together, they worked tirelessly, the team following Mia's lead. Slowly but surely, the flames began to die down, the smoke thinning as the water did its job. Mia didn't let up until she was sure the fire was completely out.

Finally, with a sigh of relief, she lowered the hose. The bakery was saved, and the firefighters cheered, patting Mia on the back.

"Great job, Chief Mia!" Bob exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear.

Mia smiled, her heart swelling with pride. "Thanks, everyone. We did it together."

As they packed up their equipment and prepared to head back to the station, Mia took a moment to reflect. She had faced a real emergency and had come through for her team and her city.

Now, she just needed to figure out who injured her family.
