Chapter 2- W
Mia set to work in the kitchen, preparing a simple yet comforting meal. The aroma of homemade soup filled the house as she chopped vegetables and stirred the pot. She wanted to make something that would be easy for her injured family to eat, something that would warm them from the inside out.
Once the soup was ready, she carefully ladled it into bowls, adding a piece of chocolate and a muffin to each tray. She poured glasses of orange juice, hoping the vitamin C would help with their recovery. Balancing the trays, she headed upstairs to deliver the meals.
First, she entered Freya and Duke's room. They were resting, looking exhausted but grateful as Mia approached with the tray.
"Dinner's ready," Mia said softly, setting the tray down on a small table next to the bed. "I made soup. It should be easy on your stomachs."
Freya smiled, her eyes lighting up. "Thank you, Mia. This looks wonderful."
Duke nodded in agreement. "You always know how to take care of us."
Mia's heart swelled with love for her parents. "Just trying to help."
Next, she went to Clemmons' room. He was sitting up in bed, reading a book, and looked up with a smile when she entered.
"Soup's on," Mia announced, placing the tray on his bedside table.
"Thanks, Mia. You're the best," Clemmons said, taking a deep breath and savoring the aroma. "Smells amazing."
"Don't forget the chocolate and muffin," Mia added with a wink.
Clemmons grinned. "You know how to spoil us."
After that, Mia headed to Buster's room. He was lying in bed, playing with a small toy, and looked up as Mia entered. Buster's eyes lit up at the sight of the tray.
"I brought you some dinner," Mia said, setting the tray down. "Soup, chocolate, muffin, and orange juice."
Buster gave her a thumbs-up and mouthed a silent "thank you."
Mia smiled and ruffled his hair gently. "Enjoy, Buster. Let me know if you need anything else."
Taking a deep breath, Mia made her way to Allen's room. Allen was lying in bed, staring at his laptop, lost in his book. He looked up as Mia entered, his eyes widening in surprise.
"I brought you some dinner," Mia said, setting the tray down on his desk. "Soup, chocolate, muffin, and orange juice."
Allen blinked, looking at the tray and then at Mia. "Thanks, Mia," he said, his voice soft. "You didn't have to do this."
"Yes, I did," Mia replied, her voice firm. "You're my brother, and I care about you. Now eat up."
Allen managed a small smile. "You're amazing, you know that?"
Mia shrugged. "Just trying to help. If you need anything else, let me know."
As she made her way back downstairs, Mia felt a sense of accomplishment. She had done her best to take care of her family, and seeing them smile made her feel a little bit better. They were all in this together, and they would get through it together.
Sitting down at the kitchen table, Mia took a moment to eat her own bowl of soup. The warmth of the broth spread through her, easing some of the tension she had been carrying. Despite everything, they were all here, safe and sound. And that was what mattered most.
Then, the anger came back. How dare they do this to her family! Her family of....
Firefighter and police officers! Mia's brain raced with thoughts, but she pulled one to the front- How and who did this?
She looked outside. No daylight.
And her parents wouldn't be glad for her to go around at night.
Leaving her one option- she'd go in the daytime!
Mia's mind was made up. Tomorrow, she would start investigating to find out who had hurt her family. But for now, she needed to make sure everyone was comfortable for the night.
She grabbed the remaining milk bottles from the fridge and headed upstairs to check on her brothers.
First, she entered Clemmons' room. He was still awake, scrolling through his phone.
"Hey, time for bed," Mia said, holding out the bottle of milk.
Clemmons looked at the bottle with a mix of confusion and amusement. "Really, Mia? Baby milk?"
Mia rolled her eyes. "It's warm milk. It'll help you sleep. Now drink up."
Clemmons sighed but took the bottle, giving her a playful glare. "You're really milking this caretaker role, aren't you?"
Mia smirked. "Get some rest, Clemmons."
Next, she went to Buster's room. He was lying on his side, looking at a comic book. Mia approached him with the bottle of milk.
"Time for bed, Buster," she said gently, holding out the bottle.
Buster gave her a look that said, "Really?"
Mia shrugged. "It's warm milk. It'll help you sleep. Besides, you need your rest."
Buster sighed and took the bottle, rolling his eyes but giving her a grateful nod.
Finally, Mia went to Allen's room. He was still at his laptop, typing away furiously. Without saying a word, she walked over, took the laptop out of his hands, and placed the milk bottle in them instead.
"Allen, you need to rest," Mia said firmly.
Allen looked at the bottle and then back at Mia. "Seriously?"
"Seriously," Mia replied. "You've been through a lot. You need to take care of yourself."
Allen sighed but took the bottle without protest. "Fine, but just this once."
Mia smiled. "Get some sleep."
With her brothers settled, Mia prepared some coffee for her parents. She brewed a fresh pot and poured two large mugs, adding a generous amount of sugar and cream to each.
Carrying the mugs carefully, she made her way to her parents' room. Freya and Duke were already in bed, looking exhausted.
"Here, Mom, Dad," Mia said, handing them the mugs of coffee. "I figured you could use this."
Freya took a sip and smiled. "Thanks, sweetheart. You're a lifesaver."
Duke nodded in agreement. "Yeah, thanks, Mia."
Mia sat on the edge of their bed, watching as they drank their coffee. "You two get some rest too, okay?"
Freya reached out and squeezed Mia's hand. "We will, darling. You've done more than enough for tonight. Get some sleep."
Mia nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "I will. Goodnight, Mom. Goodnight, Dad."
"Goodnight, Mia," they replied in unison.
As she made her way back to her room, Mia took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the day settle over her. Tomorrow, she would start her search for answers. But for now, she needed to rest and gather her strength.
She lay in bed, her mind racing with thoughts of how she would uncover the truth. But eventually, exhaustion took over, and she drifted off to sleep, determined to protect her family and bring justice to those who had hurt them.
