Chapter 13
They found Harl Hubbs in the forest, sitting calmly on a fallen log near a small clearing.
"Harl!" Allen exclaimed, jumping out of the fire truck. "What are you doing here?"
Harl grinned warmly, standing up to greet them. "Well, well, if it ain't the gang! I figured Mia might be around these parts, so I thought I'd keep her company until you all showed up."
" So, is she here?" Clemmons looked around, excited.
Hubbs sighed. " She made me promise not to tell."
Allen sighed and turned to the others.
" Follow my lead." He ordered.
Then he called, " Mia, it's us! Allen, Buster, and Clemmons. Your brothers."
When no answer came, he sighed. " Okay, time to bring in the big boy."
" You know, it wasn't us who wrote that letter, you know! We love you. So much. Clemmons and Buster are getting really annoying because you aren't here."
" Hey!" Clemmons protested. Buster crossed his arms.
" What? It's true."
They heard a laugh, and Allen knew it was working.
Clemmons took over. " You know, Allen knows who wrote the letter!"
" What? I do?!" Allen asked, bedwelled.
Clemmons nodded.
" After you left the bathroom, I found your laptop and couldn't resist looking to see what you found."
Buster took over.
" He read the report and remembered that, when you were little, the same thing happened."
" yeah, but that was because of SCHOOL. Mia doesn't need to go. She has us as her teachers."
( It was true. Buster, Clemmons and Allen took turns home schooling Mia on the days they were off/ had to go to work late.)
" Allen, listen to me carefully." Mia hissed. " Who. Was. It."
Allen stuttered before blurting out, " Fendrick!"
They could hear Mia's curses. Then, as a lightning bolt, she zoomed past them and left a note in Buster's hands. He opened it, and on it was written,
Look up.
Confused, he looked up, to find a treehouse. He pointed to his brothers, who nodded.
" Typical Mia." Allen said, peering over Buster's shoulder.
The three brothers exchanged determined glances and started climbing up to the treehouse, using the ladder made of sturdy planks nailed into the tree. As they reached the top, they saw a lot of stuff.
" Well, this is nice." Clemmons commented.
" Yes, it is * Allen agreed.
Harl popped up.
" If you want, I can help and take all of Mia's stuff to your house. Go make sure she doesn't cause any trouble."
" Thanks, Harl." Clemmons said.
" Yeah, thanks." Then, he turned and called, "Mia, wait!" Allen pushed open the trapdoor and hopped out of the treehouse. Buster and Clemmons followed closely behind.
They ran through the streets, ignoring the crowd watching two firefighters and a police officer run though the city, one wearing weird clothes, one that looked like they came out of a meeting, and one that looked normal.
Finally, they ran to the Fendrick/Sinclair arch.
" Now, up we go." Allen shuttered as he looked up.
" How about we take the elevator?" Clemmons suggested.
" Yeah, good idea." Allen nodded enthusiastically, and ran inside. His brothers followed behind. Allen pressed a floor, and Buster repeatedly pressed it while biting his nails and hopping impatiently.
" Dude. Calm down. We'll get there." Clemmons assured Buster, holding his hand down from his mouth.
After what seemed like an eternity, they arrived at the floor.
" Hurry up!" Allen yelled, running to a door just as the elevator door opened.
Inside, they found Mia facing off against Fendrick, who looked both surprised and irritated by the intrusion.
"Mia, you don't have to do this alone," Allen said, stepping forward. "We're here to help."
Mia shot them a quick glance, her expression softening slightly before she turned her attention back to Fendrick. "You think you can just mess with my family and get away with it?" she demanded, her voice low and fierce.
Fendrick scoffed. "You're just a kid, Mia. You don't know what you're dealing with."
"Oh, I think I do," she retorted, advancing towards him. "And you're about to find out what happens when you mess with me."
Clemmons moved behind Mia, gently touching her shoulders, while Allen moved in front, shielding her from Fendrick.
" She didn't mean what she said!" He exclaimed.
" Yeah, absolutely not!" Clemmons added.
" Yes, I did." Mia said though clenched teeth.
The tension in the room was palpable as Mia stood her ground, glaring at Fendrick with unwavering determination. Allen, Clemmons, and Buster exchanged nervous glances, their anxiety mounting as they tried to defuse the situation.
Allen stepped forward, his voice trembling slightly. "Listen, Mr. Fendrick, we're just here to take Mia home. She's been through a lot, and she's really upset. Please, let's just calm down."
Clemmons nodded vigorously, stepping up beside Allen. "Yeah, what he said! We're not looking for any trouble. We're just trying to keep our family safe and together."
Buster, unable to speak, gestured wildly, trying to convey his agreement with his brothers. His frantic movements only seemed to heighten the tension in the room.
Fendrick's eyes narrowed as he looked at the trio. "You think you can just come in here and dictate terms to me? Do you have any idea who you're dealing with?"
Mia, undeterred, took a step closer to Fendrick. "I know exactly who you are, Fendrick. And I know what you've done. You're not getting away with it this time."
Allen's heart raced as he tried to think of a way to de-escalate the situation. "Mr. Fendrick, we don't want any trouble. Mia's just really passionate about protecting our family. Please, let's just talk this out."
Clemmons chimed in, his voice wavering. "Yeah, we're not here to fight. We're just trying to understand what's going on and find a solution."
Fendrick crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips. "A solution, huh? How about you all leave and never come back? That sounds like a solution to me."
Mia clenched her fists, her frustration boiling over. "That's not happening, Fendrick. You owe us answers. You owe me answers."
Allen, sensing the situation spiraling out of control, desperately tried to think of a way to calm Mia down. "Mia, please, let's just take a step back and think this through. We don't have to do this now."
Clemmons nodded in agreement, his voice soothing. "Yeah, Mia. We can come back later when everyone has had a chance to cool down."
Mia's eyes flicked to her brothers, her resolve wavering for a moment before she turned back to Fendrick. "Fine. But this isn't over, Fendrick. We'll be back."
With that, she turned and marched out of the room, her brothers following closely behind. As they exited the building and made their way back to the fire truck, Allen let out a sigh of relief.
"That was intense," he muttered, running a hand through his hair.
Clemmons nodded, his face pale. "Yeah, I thought we were going to have to fight our way out of there."
Buster, still mute, nodded emphatically, his eyes wide with concern.
Mia, her anger still simmering, looked at her brothers. "Thank you for coming after me. I just couldn't let him get away with what he's done."
Allen smiled, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure this out, Mia. Together."
Clemmons grinned, patting Buster on the back. "Yeah, we're a team. And no one messes with our family."
