Thirty-Two
Summer 1991,
Was That Your First?
Her Thirteen birthday had arrived. Rhea Black was now a teenager; an age Sirius was both excited and terrified. Excited for all the mischief she'd get up, and terrified of all the mischief she'd get up.
Rhea chose to wear a dress for her birthday, she opened her drawers, reaching for a pair of shorts. She hesitated, 'Pheebs and Laura never wore shorts under their dresses,' she thought, closing the drawers. She heard the arrival of their family friends.
'Okay, you're still you, you just look a little different,' she told herself as she took a deep breath before exiting her bedroom. As soon as she walked downstairs, her brothers stopped dead in their tracks, their mouths fell open.
"What?" she questioned
"You look like a girl,"
"Carden!" her mother exclaimed, "that's awfully rude," she smiled at Rhea as she hurried her brothers away.
She smiled as her eyes found a group of people, her friends the best little group of friends she could have asked for. Angelina and Alicia, looked different, having dressed up for the occasion. Lee was chatting with her father they appeared to be in deep conversation.
George and Fred did come she smiled brightly at them, some were different, they cleaned up nicely. She'd even go as far as to say they looked very handsome tonight. As she made her way over to them, Angelina and Alicia immediately wrapped her in a tight hug.
"I never thought, I'd see the day, Rhea Black," Alicia commented
"Underneath isn't ladylike," she lifted her dress revealing a pair of doc martens combat boots. "They're more comfortable,"
"Look at them," Angelina pointed to Sirius and Lee
"What are they talking about?" she asked
"Your dad's giving him pointers on commentating," Fred told her,
"Yeah apparently he likes his styles, but he could offer a few tips, from someone with quick wit," George added
"Quick wit? My dad, you must be joking, does anyone have the time by any chance?"
"It's almost six, why?" Alicia asked
"Jack should be coming soon,"
"Does that mean we get to meet him?" Angelina wiggled her brows at her,
"No it doesn't because he can't come into my home, it's too wizardly,"
"You mean normal?" Fred pointed out,
"Don't start," she picked up her dress running to the door, "I won't be long!"
Angelina and Alicia hurried to the window to get a look at the muggle that had captured Rhea's heart. They smiled as the watched him with her, the biggest smile on his face, he was cute. She hadn't told them he was cute, George and Fred also glanced out of the window, not seeing what was so special about him.
"Happy birthday Rhea," he handed her a gift bag, "There's a card in there for Phoebe too, I couldn't forget about her,"
"I'll be sure to give it to her," she smiled, he looked down at the bag
"Aren't you going to open it,"
"Oh yeah," she opened the bag, smiling at the game, "Mario Kart,"
"I know you don't have it, I thought, I get it for you,"
"Thank you," she hugged him,
"You look beautiful tonight," he said, smiling at her, "I kind of have another birthday present for you,"
"Wow, I get two and Phoebe doesn't get one,"
"I wouldn't give Phoebe this one," she chuckled, he leaned in pressing his lips against hers, she froze as he pulled away, "was that your first kiss?"
"Is it that obvious," she said, her cheeks turning red, "I didn't think it was bad," he laughed,
"It wasn't," he looked back towards his house, "I should get home," she nodded her head, he walked away, pivoting on his heel, hurrying back to her plant a kiss on her cheek, "Happy birthday Ri,"
She squealed actually squealed. Taking a brief moment to herself before walking back into her home. Where were wide smiles, Angelina and Alicia stood, squealing with her, questions pouring out of them. 'What did he give you?' 'How was the kiss?' 'Are you dating?'
Fred had excused himself to talk with her cousin Ethan about Oliver's opinions on the Quidditch team. George believed he was genuinely curious. Only he needed to walk away from the window, he couldn't bear to see her act differently with him, claiming her house was too 'wizardly' when in fact this is everyday life for her.
He acted busy most of the night, George had his suspicions but for Rhea's sake, he didn't mention anything to either of them. It was her birthday, and the last thing they needed was an argument. As the night came to an end, Aimee Black offer them a quick trip home, with the help of their house-elf Kreacher.
The elf extended a hand to both boys, apparating them just outside of their home the Burrow. Almost certain that everyone was asleep their quietly entered their home, sneaking a few cookies up with them. As soon as they reached their room George spoke.
"Why did you go to her birthday if you were just going to avoid her the whole night?"
"Can we not talk about this, I'm tired,"
"Was Jack?" George couldn't deny that ninety per cent of their arguments had occurred by the mention of Jack.
"What? No, I already told you I don't care about him enough for it to bother me," he said, quickly changing out of his clothes. "You saw her tonight didn't you," his brother nodded.
"You were right, she is different with him,"
"Yeah, it would be like us, acting differently around the local muggle girls,"
"Especially the pretty one from the paper shop," George added,
"To some extent, I wish Rhea could see what we're like with the girls in the village,"
"It's not the same though," George pointed out, sighing before he continued, "Rhea has a crush on Jack and from the looks of it, they're dating, we're not crushing on the locals and we aren't dating them unless you aren't telling me something,"
"No, I not dating anyone, or even interested,"
"Just let this play out, Rhea will realise that a relationship with Jack won't last not if she can't be herself,"
