Part 21: Contact
Jake's P.O.V.
I lay on my bed, looking up at the blank ceiling as I waited impatiently. It's been an hour since Mark had said that he would call me. Finally, my PokeNav hummed lightly in my pocket, calling out a happy tune to me. I leaped from my bed, pulled the device from my pocket and answered the waiting call.
"Mark! Are you okay? Where are you?" I eagerly asked through the device. Through the other end, I could hear Mark sighing.
"I'm fine, although I would've liked some more help operating this ship." Mark chuckled softly before continuing. "Anyway, according to the directions that The Council had given us, I'm about an hour away from the Guardian's Island. How about you? How's your head doing?"
"It's only been sixty minutes since we've last seen each other. You should know that my head's still in bandages." I said, allowing a half-sarcastic, half-annoyed tone to linger in my voice.
I could hear Mark give me a heavy sigh from the other side. "You know what I mean. Oh well, never mind that. How's everybody else doing?"
"We're all fine," I replied. There was a moment of awkward silence, then I ventured, "So... You left pretty quickly. I guess that Professor Birch didn't really care when you left?"
"Oh, he cared all right. He asked me what I was doing and told me that I wasn't allowed to use the boat until I informed him what I was doing." He exhaled once more, hesitating before he continued. "...And I told him."
"Oh, okay... But our secret is still safe, right?" I asked in a worried tone. There was a moment of silence, allowing me to hear the engine of the boat purr as it pushed the ship towards its destination.
Finally, Mark spoke. "Yes, I only told him that Arceus sent me on a mission. He didn't question it, either. He just walked back into his lab."
I was going to reply when a small ringing noise came from the PokeNav. This ringtone was different, indicating that somebody else was trying to get a hold of me. I quickly checked who it was, then spoke to Mark once more, "Hey, Mark, my mom's trying to call me. I'll talk to you later!"
"Okay, see you," Mark replied. After a second or two, he shouted out excitedly, "Oh! I can see Guardian's Island from here!" He then hung up.
I quickly answered mom's call, eager to talk to her. But what I heard coming from the other end filled me with terror and concern. "Hello? Jacob, are you there?" It was my mom's voice, but it wasn't spoken in English. If it weren't for the fact that I was able to understand the Pokémon language, I would have only heard a Pikachu talking.
The other voice, which I assumed was my dad, that my mom was talking to didn't reply. Instead, he kept muttering something over and over again, obviously in shock from whatever happened.
"Honey, everything will be fine." I heard my mom say, trying to calm down my dad.
"Mom! Dad! Where are you?" I said, starting to panic.
"Jake, you can hear me!" My mom exclaimed. "We're-" I cut her off. I couldn't stand it anymore. I wanted to find out what happened myself.
"You know what, Mom, I'll just look for you. Don't worry!" I hung up on my PokeNav. I paced in my room, thinking of a way to get to her. I could ask Mew, but he probably has better things to worry about, like Mark. I could call mom again and ask for directions, but what if she doesn't know her precise location. Oh, I wish there was some way...
A wish. That one word brought hope to me, but then I remembered that I can't wish my own wishes. Once again, the feeling of panic flooded inside of me until I found a loophole.
Right then, Bailey came into my room. "Hey Jake, are you okay? You look worried."
I stopped pacing and looked up at her, thinking about how I should start. "Uh, yeah. You see, It's been a while since I've seen my parents and I would like to meet with them again, but... I don't know where they are."
She gave me a concerned look and placed her hand on my shoulder. "I know what you mean. Your parents are good people. I wish I could give them a proper greeting, but-" I quickly interrupted her.
"Well then, wish granted!" I exclaimed. A look of confusion and shock appeared on Bailey's face for a moment as the setting around us shifted from my room to what looked like a dense forest. A longer look around us told me that we were at the entrance of a small Pokémon village. It consisted of little houses that consisted of woven grass and sticks. A few of the Pokémon living there looked up at us and gasped and turned to flee.
"You should be ashamed of yourself!" Bailey turned to me, snatched my wrist with an iron grip, and led me away into the shrubbery that surrounded the village. "First off, you have some explaining to do. Secondly, you can't just scare those poor things like that! Now, tell me, why did you just do that?"
"...My mom called me. She, uh... Something happened to her, so I wanted to make sure that she was okay." I replied honestly. Her death grip on me loosened for a second before she completely let go of me.
Bailey sighed. "Look, those are wild Pokémon. They're not familiar with seeing humans running around all the time. Use your PokéCore next time, okay?" She was right, and I was stupid and didn't use common sense.
We both grabbed our Pokécores and transformed into Pokémon. With the capability of fitting in now, we first re-bandaged my head, then strode back into the village, where Pokémon were giving us confused looks. Others were staring at Bailey in awe.
I rubbed the back of my head and gave the gawking Pokémon a cheeky smile. "Hehe... Yeah, I'm sorry about that." I continued walking towards the center of the town, where a large (in the eyes of a Pikachu) fire pit was. Inside of it, there were warm coals that gave off a dim glow of orange.
As I continued searching for my parents, I kept muttering to myself, "Come on, where are they?" This continued until I saw a female Pikachu peer out of a hollowed-out tree. She looked over in my direction and went back inside of the tree. I scampered over to the tree and gestured for Bailey to follow.
When we reached the tree, I looked through the doorway to see two Pikachu and an elderly Raichu, who turned out to be sleeping. The female Pikachu I saw before looked up at me again, the other following suit. "Jacob, is that you?"
