Chapter Two

Sara knew of a path she could ride on at least for some of the way before she would need to ditch the bike. Sara put her bag into the metal wire frame basket on her bike.  Once she finally decided that she was far enough away from the town she lit the lantern and tied it to one of the handlebars. It had been about 4 months since Sara had been on this path but she still knew it well enough to know that there was an abandoned cave a little over halfway down it. The forest surrounding the town is home to the μύθους but closer to the town there is less danger as the military is sent to deal with large threats near towns and cities.

Sara heard a noise come from somewhere in the bushes, it sounded like  whatever it was, was in pain. Even knowing the dangers of the unknown Sara couldn’t help but want to help the poor creature. She stopped her bike and started looking around the shrubbery around the path when she saw something amazing. A beautiful air hatchling, it couldn’t have been more than a year old. “Where is your mother?” Sara asked the little hatchling. In this world, dragons raise their babies for at least three years. Finding a hatchling this young without a mother meant something must have happened.

Sara knelt down and offered a hand to the dragon. “It’s okay, I won't hurt you little one….” She whispered. The dragon smelled her hand before nuzzling into it. Sara put the handle of the lantern into her mouth so she could pick up the hatchling. The average weight of a one-year-old dragon is about 55 to 75 pounds, this hatchling seems to be lighter than that. Sara moved her bag out of the basket on her bike and set the hatchling inside. She put her bag over her shoulder and situated it to where it wouldn't be in the way while riding. Sara got onto the bike and re-tied the lantern to the handlebar.  “So what should I call you? Maybe Pastel?” Sara asked the little hatchling, getting a happy “Grah!” in return.

Sara heard a noise come from behind her, she didn’t have to turn around to know what it was. From the way, the earth shook and the large stature she felt coming towards her, she knew it was a dragon. Sara thought it must have been Pastel’s mother until she looked at the hatchling and saw it looked as scared as she felt. Sara didn’t care if it was Pastel’s mother. She just rode as fast as possible down the path. She knew it was faster but she had to try.

Sara saw out of the corner of her eye another dragon, it was flying directly toward them.  This one was an air dragon, which meant the one behind her was definitely not Pastel’s mother because that one had to be. Sara looked behind her finally still moving as fast as she could when she saw a large earth dragon ruining after them. “Oh, for fucks sake!” Air dragons and Earth dragons are natural enemies. The Air dragon swopped down behind Sara and Pastel as if she was protecting them, Pastel let out a pitiful roar, sounding like the hatchling was crying. Sara rode faster ignoring the sound of the dragons fighting behind her.

Sara had managed to get to that abandoned cave that was on this path and basically slid into the opening of it. Pastel was still crying out for her mother so Sara picked her up and held onto her. “I’m sorry pastel, but please you have to be quiet” Sara whispered. Sara continued to hold Pastel till the little hatchling fell asleep. Sara wrapped Pastel up in the jacket she was wearing then set her back in the basket of the bike to start working on setting up camp.

Sara dug a small hole before grabbing some sticks and twigs to start a small fire for them to keep warm, Sara grabbed the flint and steel from her bag and started the fire. She could no longer hear the dragons fighting whether that’s because they stopped or she was far enough away she had no idea. The Air dragon trusted Sara enough to take care of Pastel and that was a good enough reason to keep running in the morning.

Air dragons are considered the weakest type, they’re smaller in size and tend to be the more docile of the dragons. They still aren’t friendly though, just less destructive. Sara knew that the mama air dragon probably lost but she hoped that it also managed to take down the earth dragon. Earth dragons are natural enemies of the air dragons, Fire dragons are natural enemies of the water dragons. Sara found it fascinating that such creatures were scared of one another but then again it's obvious why. Fire and earth dragons are weak against air and water dragons. The light dragons are the ones Sara finds most interesting though from what humans know the light dragons have not natural enemies.

Sara dug around in her bag for a moment before pulling out her journal, this was a perfect opportunity to write down everything that happened today and to sketch Pastel. Sara started to write down the events of today before slowly falling asleep next to the fire. She had a very long day and her body just simply couldn’t handle the exhaustion.

The next morning Sara awoke to the sounds of Pastel’s playful growls and roars. She looked over at the hatchling sitting up right. “Good morning Pastel, how did you get out of the basket?” Sara knew she wasn’t going to get an answer but whatever. Pastel ran over to Sara and jumped on her, flapping her little wings happily. Pastel was a small off white dragon with a light purple under armor, spikes and horns. Sara laughed at the hatchling and grabbed some of the jerky from her bag giving it to Pastel. She grabbed another piece for herself before packing up camp and getting ready to leave.
