AC/DC's "Back in Black" played in the bar from the juke box in a secluded corner. Phoenix had removed herself from her spot on the stool at the bar, going to watch the current fight.
Tony Stark was still thinking about the girl, not in a romantic way, not at all. He just got a certain feeling regarding the girl he couldn't describe. He let the subject fall to the back of his mind, however, as he wanted to spend this fun night with his team without distractions.
The Avengers brushed Tony's behavior off of their shoulder's for now, as they too wanted to enjoy the night. They were all grouped by the caged fighting ring currently.
Sam, Bucky, Tony, Steve, even Vision and others were flinging money around, betting who they assumed to win the current fight.
The fight ended eventually, the man who lost laying upon the ground and groaning as he held his aching head. The two fighters finally wobbled out of the fighting cage, and money was exchanged between the group of Avengers.
"All right," the referee in the middle of the ring shouted. "Any women wanna give it a go?"
Clint looked playfully over to his partner, shoving her. "Nat?" He urged.
The group looked at her, some encouraging her and others dismissing the idea.
Natasha put her hands up in defense. "That's all right, fellas. I only came to watch."
"I'll go!" Was heard in the mass of people surrounding the cage. Tony knew that voice.
All heads turned towards Phoenix. "Mr. Stark? Is that her?" Peter asked Tony from beside him, as Phoenix made herself more distinct. She stepped up on the couple stairs to access the cage opening. Her eyes were her most distinctive feature.
Tony's gaze stuck on her. "That's her."
The group of Avengers watched the young girl as the cage was shut behind her upon her entrance.
"Christ, how old is she?" Bruce asked in a concern tone. Everyone could tell Phoenix was young, and although she had an athletic build they weren't sure if she could take on any man that was here.
"Looks about my age," Peter stated, looking at his team members and shrugging.
All eyes were on Phoenix as the referee picked up one of her arms raising it. "We have one contestant, any challengers?"
A man, towering over everyone, even Steve, Bucky, and maybe meeting a bit over Thor's height walked up the stairs and opened the cage. "I'll challenge," he said gruffly.
Steve was about to protest the idea of such a big man fighting a girl barely half the size, until Tony grabbed his forearm. Steve looked at Tony confused. "Just wait," Tony said. "There's something off about this. I don't think this girl would've taken the challenge if she didn't know what she was doing."
Steve sighed and reluctantly listened to Stark. The crowd was silent as they watched the two fighters prepare themselves. Men whistled as Phoenix shrugged off her signature leather jacket she got as a present from her father. She had promised him once she would never engage in the fights, only watch. He wasn't there anymore, however, so she had no reason to uphold the promise—this was her first time breaking it, though. Whistles turned into shouts as Phoenix slipped off her shirt, revealing her sports bra and toned upper body.
She treated her body well, maintaining her training even after her father disappeared from her life. Lafayette watched from the bar as his friend started jumping around to get herself warmed up. "Nixie, baby, what are you doing?" He whispered to himself. If Logan was here, Lafayette knew he would be six feet under for even letting Phoenix enter the damn fighting cage. So, Lafayette exited from behind the counter and raced to the cage.
"Wait!" He screamed as he opened the cage door. All eyes were on him now. "Phoenix," he started sternly as he reached her. "Don't do this, you know what could happen." He was whispering harshly to her, trying to keep what he was alluding to a secret. "You could risk losing control."
Phoenix wanted to consider Lafayette's words, she knew they were only expressed out of care and she kept quiet, thinking it over. All consideration for stepping down, though, were thrown out the window as the man who was challenging Phoenix said, "Get out of here you sparkly faggot, let the damn girl fight. Let's see what that wimpass father of yours taught you."
Everyone became silent as Phoenix pushed Lafayette out of the cage and out of harms way. She let out a deep, animalistic growl that came from deep within her. She recognized the large man before her now. He was the only bastard that came close to beating her father in the ring—he called himself the Thrasher. Phoenix always thought the name was lame and sounded like some villain's alias from a kid's cartoon.
She approached him as if her were prey, and came up to his chest. She looked up at him, her stare deadly. "What did you say, you big wall of fat you'd like to call muscle?"
The crowd was still, enthralled by the scene before them. The girl smirked as she saw she got a reaction out of him as he dared step closer. "I said—," before Thrasher could continue, Phoenix landed a swift punch to the man's face. The fight had begun, and the referee signaled this by blowing the starting whistle.
As Thrasher regained himself from the harsh blow to his nose, Phoenix circled him, slightly crouching and assessing his body language. He was furious, perfect.
"You little bitch," he called out as he went to grab for the girl. She ducked, and moved behind him kicking his legs from beneath him. The betting was beginning amongst the crowd.
Thrasher got up quickly to be met with an attack from Phoenix. He stopped her attempt, however, as she went to go for the punch he grabbed her arm flipping her on her back quickly and moving to punch the girl. She rolled away from the attack swiftly.
Phoenix stayed on her toes as Thrasher huffed, buffing his chest to make it look larger.
Somewhere in the crowd someone yelled. "Enough with the play fighting, get on with it." Everybody cheered agreeing with the sudden burst from an onlooker.
"Yeah, enough with the little games, bub." Phoenix smiled deviously at Thrasher.
Thrasher had enough as he came barging towards Phoenix. This was exactly what she wanted. She wanted to get him irritated because then his fighting would be less objective and more distracted and one-sided.
When Thrasher got close enough, Phoenix jumped onto the cage surrounding her using it to her advantage. Her legs propelled her so she was almost running along the caging, finally pushing herself off to do a flip in the air before her foot came down and connected with Thrasher's jaw.
He fell to the floor, silent and astonished by the bold move the teen had just made. The Avengers were astonished and the crowd as well. Silence soon turned into cheering as Phoenix stood confidently above Thrasher who was getting up.
He readied himself, now extremely pissed off. "Fine, you wanna play dirty. I can play dirty."
Thrasher charged Phoenix, and she could only get part of herself out of the way, getting knocked off balance. This allowed Thrasher a moment to take advantage of the small vulnerability.
Phoenix didn't let it last long, however, as the two started throwing punch after punch, kick after kick. Phoenix was starting to form cuts and bruises that soon healed thanks to her father's genetics. No one noticed that healing, though as they were too captured by the fight scene.
Phoenix was starting to question herself for taking on the challenge, but she wouldn't show that. She needed to keep going. She wouldn't let this motherfucker get the satisfaction of beating her, humiliating her.
Phoenix's defenses started getting sloppy as she became tired. "C'mon, kid." Tony whispered as he grimaced, watching the girl getting kicked to the cage fencing. Thrasher was landing multiple kicks to her exposed gut. It hurt, but every single blow she could feel herself healing.
Phoenix made an attempt to get up, but she soon felt a muscular bicep wrap around her throat starting to cut off her air supply. She made eye contact with the brunette man from before at the bar. His eyes were fearful, but she could recognize a familiar look in his eyes. It was the same look of pride and hope her father used to give her.
Phoenix's vision started blotching. She saw her father's eyes and heard Thrasher spit in her ear. "He was a sorry excuse for a father and you knew it. He deserved to go, and you'll be next."
That was the last straw as Phoenix's eyes glowed brighter than ever before. She growled so loud it could've been confused with a growl from that of a lion. The whole bar shook.
Thrasher screamed in agony as the girl's claws erected from her knuckles, scraping his arms in the process. The crowd gasped at the sight, Lafayette mumbling a 'Shit.'
Thrasher let go in a state of confusion and fear. Phoenix let all animal instinct take over as she stood tall, starting an attack on Thrasher. She slashed and kicked, until she was pulled off of the man by familiar soft hands. "Phoenix!" Lafayette yelled in her ear. She struggled against him. "Phoenix goddamnit, stop it!"
She stopped her attack suddenly, observing what she had done. Her claws were bloodied and not from her own bloodshed. She looked towards Thrasher who was crouching in a corner of the cage in fear, covering his wounds with his hands.
Phoenix didn't feel any guilt as she looked at the man. She pulled on her shirt and grabbed her jacket, ripping her arm away from the grip of Lafayette's hand. "He deserved it," she said before walking out of the cage and exiting the bar.
Lafayette stood there in disappointment. Disappointment in himself and in the girl.
The Avengers rushed out of the bar, going after the girl. Tony shook his head as he and his team raced after the girl. He knew he was right.
