2. Trespassing
They came for her when she was in the supermarket. They never approached her in public before. It was always when she was alone. So when Makena saw them, she was startled.
What were they doing here? she thought as she moved down the aisle, trying to avoid a conflict.
But they followed her down the aisle and to another. They weren't doing anything bad, but she knew that it wouldn't last long. They would do something sooner or later.
Makena ran when she turned the corner. She heard the others curse, and then they were after her. There was a commotion as they ran, people dodging and jumping out of the way, but not doing anything to stop it. That was the way here; mind your own business, and no one would hurt you.
Makena pushed past the people in front of her and turned into different aisles to confuse her pursuers. She didn't have much luck as they seemed to split up and regroup later on.
All through the chase, Makena worried that she was not looking professional enough for the Silent Warrior. Soon, she realized that it didn't matter because she was not in her disguise, and people wouldn't recognize her.
But the men who were chasing her thought that she was an accomplice to the Silent Warrior. They hated the masked man, and if the girl could get them close to the hero, they'd tried to get their hands on it. But little did they know that she was the Silent Warrior.
She found the exit of the supermarket and headed for it. She was almost there when someone else stepped from seemingly nowhere and blocked her path.
Makena had too much momentum to stop, so she ran straight into her captor's arms. His grip tightened once she was there, and she heard the other men approach
The chases had become so frequent that she knew their names. There was Peter who was holding her, James who was the leader of the group, and Hopper who was just...there. He didn't seem to do anything but stay there.
"Well, well, well," James said, his breathing hard. He tried to breathe normally to show that he wasn't tired, but his breathing gave him away.
Makena, however, was fit, and the workout hadn't affected her much. Her hands grabbed onto Peter's arm and she tightened her grip. Using the machines in her arms to her advantage, she lifted Peter from his spot and threw him into James who was standing there dumbfounded.
It was like a domino effect; Peter crashing into James, who in turn took Hopper down with them.
Makena bolted out the exit and into the cool morning air. She hurried out the way of the supermarket, and glanced behind her to make sure that no one was following her. She was glad that there was no one behind her, but she couldn't relax just yet. She had to be absolutely sure.
She walked around for a while, turning here and there, stopping and going into different shops, looking and buying things to make it seem that she wasn't just hiding from someone.
As she walked around, she couldn’t help but notice the state in which the place was in.
Although some places were very clean and civilized, there were other spots where people were living in the streets and rubble was strewn everywhere. The contrast in the two places was just so enormous that it seemed to be two completely different locations merged together to make one world.
When she was sure that there was no one following her, she started to head home. She opened the door and put the groceries on the table. She packed them away and grabbed her backpack with her Silent Warrior clothing. She then proceeded to go to the weapons room and walk to the place where the bow and arrows were.
She took one off its place, and pulled back the string. It didn't have the same feeling as the other one did. The other in which they took. But she couldn't complain. She took the bag that held the arrows and tested the point of the arrows.
Satisfied that they were sharp enough, she took the bow, her backpack, and the arrows outside. She slipped in the alley way and took out the cape. She put it on, wore the bag of arrows, and tied the mask on. She rummaged around at the bottom of the bag and took out the gun. She slipped it into its holster, grabbed the bow, and jumped up onto the roof.
It was time to get her trusty bow back.
* * *
Makena jumped off the roof and landed on the balcony, making no sound. She walked to the glass door and peered in.
There was no one in there, and the room appeared to be a living room. The couch was in front of the television which was hung on the wall. There was a coffee table in front of the couch, and pictures of a happy family were on the walls.
Makena touched the door with her finger. There was a screech as she drew a circle in the glass, and it fell and landed in the carpet inside, making no noise.
She put her hand through the hole and unlocked the door, pushing down on the handle. She heard a click and the door opened. She went in and shut the door behind her, careful to make sure that every move she made was silent.
The picked up the glass circle that she had made before, and fit it into the hole. She then drew another circle on the edge of it, hearing the heat sizzle as the glass sealed up again.
She turned started to walk to the door, only to be met by a small girl standing at the entrance. She had an old and loved teddy bear tucked in her arms, and was wearing purple butterfly pajamas. Her small feet were bare, and her blonde hair was tied up in pigtails. She stood there with her mouth opened.
Makena froze, unsure what to do. Normally, if this was an older person, she'd knock them out. But the girl was young, around three to five years old. She couldn't harm her.
"You're the Silent Warrior," the young girl exclaimed. She opened her mouth to yell to her mother, but Makena held her finger to her lips. The girl nodded, understanding the gesture.
"What are you doing here?" she whispered as she came closer. She climbed up onto the couch, standing on it to make herself taller. "Are you going to save us?"
Makena cocked her head to the side, showing that she didn't understand. She had always thought that those who lived in the Government buildings were happy with them. They liked the Government, and respected them. Or maybe the girl didn't know what she was saying.
The girl shook her head as if to say never-mind.
Makena pointed to herself, and to the door in which the girl had come out of. The girl nodded, understand, and happy to be a part of the legend’s plans.
Makena slipped out of the room, looking out. The door opened out into a small kitchen. There was no one in there, so she stepped out. She saw another door and went out, that one.
The door lead outside, into the hallway. There were many doors there, leading to other rooms that belonged to other people. None of the residents were outside. The hallway was empty.
She ran to the stairs, wanting to be out of the way of other people. Makena was wagering a guess that none of them wanted to walk.
She didn't meet anyone else along the way, and was glad for it. She ran the whole length of the staircase, glad that she chose a level that wasn't that far from the top.
When she reached the end of the stairs, she stopped and nocked an arrow into her bow. She then opened the door and looked out.
The hallway was empty, the guards elsewhere. This was the perfect time for her. They wouldn't be expecting her for she always came in the night time.
She went out and closed the door silently behind her and approached the double doors that were situated at the end of the corridor.
She stood at the entrance, surveying the door for any signs of security or alarms. When she found none, she knew that something was wrong. Very wrong.
A faint noise caught her attention. It was so small that anyone normal wouldn't be able to hear it, but Makena had been heightening her senses ever since she was young. So she heard it loud and clear.
She whirled around, pulling the string of the bow taut and aimed. A man stood there, a gun pointed at Makena. He was around his middle age, tall and well-built. He had stubble growing around his chin, and his hair was short-cropped. He wore completely black, even down to the gloves he was wearing. His eyes narrowed into small slits when he saw the Silent Warrior standing there.
"What are you doing here?" he hissed.
Makena said nothing, keeping the bow high so that it was pointed at this neck.
"Get out of my way."
Still, she didn't move. She wasn't sure whether this man was an enemy, or another hunter who was up against the Government. She couldn't be too sure.
There was a small click up in the wall, and the both of them turned and pointed their weapons to the source of the sound. There was nothing there, but a small vent in the wall.
The man looked back to Makena, dismissing it as nothing, but Makena focused on the area, and realized that she could see smoke coming from it, escaping into the corridor.
Is it a fire? she thought.
The man looked back at the wall, seeing Makena studying it. As the two started to feel drowsy, they both came to the same conclusion.
Sleeping gas.
