Trivia: The Hierarchy of Intelligent Races
There are seven known intelligent races in Legea, along with an eighth whose existence is disputed, and a ninth whose qualifications as "intelligent" are disputed.
Men is the first of the intelligent races. The first of them to populate the earth of Legea, the world was given into his care to steward and govern.
Beside men, to assist him, are the thindran, the legaeësser, the dragons, and the ugthoda, commonly called werevultures. Though the earth was not given into their specific hands, their status is not the less for that, and indeed they are in many ways greater than men. Yet men were chosen, in their comparative weakness, to govern the earth, and the greater kinds were placed beside them that they might have help.
There is a final race beside men, though its existence is widely disputed among scholars: these are the creature known as griffin, with an eagle's foreparts and lion's hindquarters. Some say the legends are a twisted version of the thindran. Others say that griffins once existed, but they long ago died out. Whatever the truth may be, no man has claimed to see a griffin in Legea for over two thousand years now.
Below men, their servants, if you will, though more intelligent than dumb beasts, are certain races resembling rats and large birds such as crows, ravens and hawks. These are collectively called eraris. The birds generally have the speech of men, but the rat-kind converse in a language of high-pitched squeaks and tones that can, with difficulty, be practiced by a man. However, there is only one person in recorded history who has taken the time to learn it.
The final race, which deserves a mention even if most do not count it, are the raedega -- the shapeshifters. They are certainly bestial in their habits and desires, and they thirst for blood. They can take on a human form, but their skin will appear pale beyond any natural colour and their teeth are sharp. Their preferred shape is that of a panther.
There are arguments that these did not even exist at first in Legea, but that they were some product of the Ruler of Night. Others protest that they were once not so debased, but he took them and corrupted them. However it be, there has never been any account of a properly sentient shapeshifter, or one that does not lust for the blood of men.
I will be posting a separate chapter for each of the races beside men. The eraris will have one chapter.
