Chip On My Shoulder: Part Two
—-DECEMBER: CHRISTMAS—
"Bye Malcolm! Merry Christmas, enjoy London!" Magnus called out to Malcolm, from his dorm room.
"Focus, Magnus." Cat said, as she was sitting on the bed cross legged, with a stack a flashcards. "Now the case of Russell vs. Sullivan."
"Determined that Russell was legally the child's father even though he was just a sperm donor." he answered. Cat jumped up.
"Gold star!"
"Yes!" she hugged him, as they both screamed. Then there was a knock at the door. Magnus opened it, to find Alec standing in the hall with a present.
"Hi, Alec!" he let him in. When he had his back turned Cat gave Magnus a look. A look that said 'who is this boy'?
"Merry Christmas, Magnus." he said handing him a wrapped gift. He smiled, and took it gratefully. He unwrapped it, and laughed. "It's a real time saver you know. Two in one shampoo and conditioner." Cat leaned in behind Magnus and whispered in his ear,
"Hair care?! Marry this boy." Magnus held in a laugh. "Well I should get back to the salon." Cat said, waving at Alec, and winking at Magnus on her way out.
"You are too sweet to have thought of me." Magnus hugged him, and just as he did, Malcolm walked in. Magnus pulled away from Alec at super speed.
"Magnus, hey." he said walking in.
"Malcolm!"
"Have you seen Annabelle?" Man, he looked good. He was wearing a suit, and his hair was gelled back.
"Yeah." he said staring at him. Malcolm motioned for him to continue. "Oh, I mean no."
"Great we're gonna miss our flight." he said frantically before leaving. Magnus watched him leave, and continued to stare at the door once he was gone.
"Um, Magnus?" Magnus turned around, remembering that Alec was there. "I don't know if you've noticed but, every time Malcolm's with you, or even ten feet away, your IQ goes down to forty maybe less." Magnus blinked at him. "It's probably not any of my business but could it be the real thing that's holding you back, is the very guy you're trying to impress?" he let what Alec said sink in. He was right.
"Yes. I've been smiling, and sweet, and blowing my chance. I'm chasing him away. Oh, now I've got a chip on my shoulder! No more whining, and pining. Nope, let's do this. Here." Magnus threw Alec his Law 101 book. "Instead of doodling heart in it, I think I'm going to memorize it. Let's see how he likes me now. What do you think?" He said turning to Alec, who was standing in the middle of the room, clutching the book and looking stunned. He broke out of his daze and smiled.
"This book isn't going to read itself."
—-JANUARY—-
"Mr. Latimer was clearly within his rights to ask for visitation. Without his sperm, the child in question wouldn't exist." Malcolm argued with Professor Morgenstern. Morgenstern smirked.
"Now you're thinking like a lawyer!" he commended. The class cheered for him, and started giving him fist bumps and high fives. Magnus didn't hesitate before raising his hand. Mr. Morgenstern looked surprised to see his hand raised, but called on him anyways. "Yes, Mr. Bane?"
"Mr. Fade makes an excellent point, but did the defendant keep a log of every sperm emission made throughout his life?" The class started to murmur with amusement. Mr Morgenstern shushed them.
"Interesting. Why do you ask."
"Well, unless the defendant attempted to contact every sexual encounter to find out if a child resulted from those unions he has no parental claim over this child whatsoever. Why now? Why this sperm?" Morgenstern nodded.
"I see your point."
"And," Magnus continued. "by Mr. Fade's standards, all masturbatory emissions where the sperm was clearly not seeking an egg would be called reckless abandonment." The class bursted out laughing. Magnus looked over to Alec to see his reaction and was pleased to see that he was smiling.
"Mr. Bane, you just won your case." The class stopped laughing, and Magnus smiled. He just won his first (hypothetical) court case! Morgenstern dismissed the class after that, but stopped Magnus before he could leave.
"Mr Bane, excellent work today. I assume you're applying for my internship? Do you have a resume?" Magnus was surprised. Of course, he had been think of applying, but he didn't know if he would be good enough. He shook himself out of his shock, and dug around in his bag, pulling out a piece of paper.
"I'm one step ahead of you." he handed his professor the resume. "And thank you in advance for your consideration." Morgenstern nodded and turned to Alec.
"Make sure to put this on file." he handed him the resume, and Alec put it in his bag. Then he walked out with Magnus. They stopped in front of the big tree in the middle of the quad.
"You were something to see there." the TA complemented him.
"Well I couldn't have done it without your help." Magnus said looking into his eyes. He's always known they were blue, but he never really took the time to properly look at them. They were mesmerizingly blue. Alec broke eye contact after a few seconds, and blushed.
"No, don't start thanking me, you did that on your own. I'm just happy I could bared witness to the moment. You know I shouldn't really tell you this, but Morgenstern marked the big test you guys did last week, and he gave me the marks to input."
"And...?"
"And you aced it. Ninety-seven percent, to be exact." Magnus threw his arms around the other boy, knocking him off balance, but Alec steadied himself.
"Thank you for helping me study!" he screeched happily. Alec chuckled at his happiness.
"I told you hard work pays off."
