Chapter 17
Ellidy reaches the library and pulls the key from her pocket, unlocking the heavy oak doors and pushing them open. As they step inside, they are hit with a wave of warm golden light, bathing the room in a soft glow. The room is massive and filled with endless shelves of books, each one seemingly more ancient than the next. I look around, my mouth open. "That's a lot of books."
"Yeah, it's kind of overwhelming," she says as her eyes scan the endless rows of books. It seems impossible to find one specific book. Ellidy slowly walks forward and approaches the many bookshelves. She runs her hand across the spines of the countless books as she searches for the one they are looking for. "Let's see, where would they keep the magic portal spell? I swear the person who made this system doesn't understand alphabetical order," she mutters under her breath as she continues searching.
After a few hours of searching, Ellidy finally spots the spell book we were looking for. It is placed on a high shelf, out of reach. "Aha! Found it," she says with excitement. She stands on her tiptoes, trying to reach it but can't get a good grip on the book. My face lights up. "Thank God."
"Yeah, I'm starting to feel like they placed it on the top shelf on purpose so nobody could reach it," she says, looking at the book longingly. "Now we just have to figure out how we're going to get it down." I think for a moment. "I could pick you up," I say, closing my eyes and questioning why I suggested that. "Wait, you want to pick me up so I can get the book?" she says, a bit flustered. I start stuttering. "Yeah... you know, to get the book."
She takes a step away from the bookshelf, making space for me. She has a slight pink tint on her cheeks. "I guess you do have a point. Alright." Ellidy stands in front of me, waiting for me to pick her up. She is a bit startled at first by how strong I am, but quickly regains her composure. She reaches up towards the book, just barely grasping hold of it and pulling it off the shelf. "Got it!" she says with a smile, holding the book up triumphantly.
I look up at her. "Yes." Ellidy is still in my arms. She looks me in the eye, and for a moment, our faces are just inches apart. A slow, sly grin spreads across her lips. "So, are you going to put me down anytime soon?" I turn slightly pink. "Oh, yeah." I set her down gently, but our hands linger on each other for just a moment longer than necessary. There's a charged silence between us. Ellidy lands back on her feet and takes a moment to brush herself off, the spell book still clutched under her arm. She gives me a slight smile. "Thanks."
Ellidy's heart sinks as she hears the heavy doors creak open. She grabs my wrist and pulls me behind one of the rows of bookcases to hide. She glances out from behind the shelf, trying to get a glimpse of whoever just entered the library without being seen. Ellidy can feel her heart racing, her mind racing to think of a plan. The footsteps of the unknown person echo throughout the seemingly endless rows of bookcases, getting closer and closer.
I try to get a glimpse of who it is. "Who is it?" Ellidy can make out a tall, shadowy figure moving through the library, their footsteps heavy and menacing. She can't tell exactly who it is, the stranger being hidden in the dim light. Ellidy's grip on my wrist tightens, fear beginning to well up inside her. She whispers to me in a hushed tone, "Oh, this is bad."
She glances around, searching desperately for a place to hide, somewhere the stranger won't find them. The stranger's footsteps grow louder and louder as they draw nearer, getting closer to where they are tucked away behind the bookshelf. I freeze and whisper, "Is it God?" Ellidy's eyes widen as realization sets in. "Yes, I think it is." She feels the panic surge through her, the weight of the situation hitting her like a punch in the gut.
I nearly scream, "Oh shi-"
Ellidy clamps a hand over my mouth to stop me from making a sound. Her mind races, trying to come up with a plan. She peeks around the bookshelf, watching the figure of God move closer to their hiding spot. He is only a few feet away from them now, the sound of his footsteps echoing throughout the room. It is now or never; they have to act or risk being caught.
I reach for my necklace. "Let's fight him." Ellidy looks at me with a mixture of shock and disbelief. "What do you mean 'let's fight him'? It's God; we can't just fight him! We'd get crushed in seconds!"
"Well, how do we plan to get out of here?" Ellidy is quiet for a moment, thinking fast. She glances over at the spell book she still has clutched in her hands. "Wait a second... I have an idea." She turns to me, her eyes filled with determination. "But you're not gonna like it."
