Chapter 16
"I'm sorry, okay? I was so busy running and sword fighting I didn't think about it," I said, my voice trembling as I fiddled with my hair. Her eyes darted around, unable to meet mine. "It's fine," she said quickly, though her tone betrayed a mix of frustration and concern. "It's not your fault," she added, reaching out and putting a hand on my shoulder, her touch both comforting and desperate.
I stepped back quickly, feeling the weight of the situation crushing down on me. "But it is," I insisted, my voice breaking. "Now we're stuck here with nowhere to go." My breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. "I've put you in danger." I could feel my heart pounding, a sense of helplessness taking over as my back slid down the cold, unforgiving wall. When I hit the floor, the reality of our predicament hit me even harder. "I'm the cause of this war," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "I'm weak, a disgrace, a disappointment to my family."
Ellidy's eyes softened with a mix of empathy and determination as she sat down next to me. "Hey, look at me," she said, her voice gentle but firm. She smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my tear-streaked face. "Look at me. It's not your fault, it's God's. And you know what? You scare Him. He wouldn't send His best angels after you if you were weak, if you had no hope of succeeding."
I looked down, the words sinking in slowly. "Thanks." I glanced at where I had been stabbed, noticing that the bleeding had stopped. A small glimmer of relief pierced through the darkness of my despair.
Ellidy gave me a light punch on the shoulder, her smile warm and reassuring. "Don't be an idiot. We got this. I mean, we will all be fine," she said, trying to infuse her voice with as much confidence as possible. She looked at my shoulder again. "Oh wow, the bleeding stopped! That's a good thing, at least." I wiped my tears, a flicker of hope igniting within me. "Now, how do we open a portal?"
"Uhhhhhh, I have no idea," she said in a sheepish tone, her bravado fading slightly. I started thinking "I never learned the spell. It would be easy; I just need the book." "You don't have a copy of it with you?" she asked in disbelief. I looked at her, confused. "No, there are only two in the world: one owned by my parents in Hell and one in God's library."
"Wait, they keep a copy in God's library?" She gave a mischievous grin. "Guess who has a key." Ellidy took a small key out of her pocket. "I have access to God's library. I've taken a few things," she said with a playful wink.
I gave her a mischievous grin in return. "Wow, now I don't have to blame myself for you falling. You were gonna fall all by yourself." Ellidy blushed as she laughed, the tension in the air easing slightly. "Hey! Rude. I have a good reason for going to the library." "I mean, how else am I supposed to learn all of God's secrets?" she said with a cheeky tone.
I got up slowly, still hurting from being stabbed. Ellidy saw me struggling. "Here, let me help you up," she said, gently lifting me to my feet. She put her arm around my shoulder just in case I stumbled and fell again.
"You sure you're alright? You can lean on me if you need," she said with a hint of concern. I gave her a reassuring smile. "It's fine... Let's go steal a book." "That's the spirit!" she said with a slight laugh before moving towards the library.
