Chapter 10
"You let her go!" Eve shouted, her voice echoing down the hall. I look at my feet, feeling the weight of her disappointment. "I did, okay? Look, she doesn't want to be part of this," I mumble, my voice barely audible. Eve crosses her arms, her gaze piercing. "You let an enemy go. Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?" I look up, meeting her stern gaze. "But she didn't attack," I argue. Eve's eyes are narrow. "It doesn't matter. She's an enemy, and you let her go. That was a reckless decision."
I let out a heavy breath, my hands trembling. "She's just a teenager! What did you want me to do, kill her?" "You need to start thinking like a warrior, not like a kid," Eve replies, her tone icy. "We're up against Heaven, and they won't hesitate to destroy us. You have to learn to make sacrifices and do what's necessary." I feel my anger bubbling up. "She was defenseless! I wasn't going to kill her."
"You're missing the point," Eve says, her voice unyielding. "It doesn't matter if she was defenseless or not. She's an enemy, and she posed a threat to us. You need to stop thinking with your heart and start thinking with your mind." "I will always fight with my heart first," I declare, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.
"That's your weakness," Eve retorts. "You're emotional, and that makes you reckless. You need to learn to control your emotions and fight with your head, not your heart." "What happened to my trainer who told me I would never fail and that I'm meant to be the chosen one?" I challenge, my eyes searching hers for a trace of the mentor I once admired. Eve's expression softens slightly, a hint of regret flickering in her eyes. "I still believe in you, but you need to listen to me. You are the chosen one, yes, but you're also far from perfect. You need to learn to control yourself."
"And what did Michael want to talk to you about anyway?" I ask, suspicion lacing my words. Eve's expression hardens again at the mention of Michael. "It's nothing to worry about. Just something he needed to discuss." "Really, nothing?" I press, not buying her dismissive tone. "Yes, nothing important," Eve responds, her tone growing more defensive. "You don't need to worry about it." "Well, it clearly seemed important to him," I retort, crossing my arms. "What did he want to talk about?"
"It's nothing you need to concern yourself with," Eve says firmly. "Just go to your room" I almost start laughing at the absurdity of it all. "What am I, five?" "I don't care how old you are," Eve snaps, her patience wearing thin. "You need to learn to obey orders and stop asking questions. Just go to your room, now." I storm off to my room, feeling a mix of anger and confusion. Eve watches me, shaking her head. "She's too stubborn and too emotional," she mutters to herself.
I slam my door, and at that moment, I start thinking out loud to myself. "Wait a minute...how did Michael find out where I am?" My breath is short and shaky as realization dawns on me. There's something more going on here than I originally thought. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. "The only people who know where I am are my mom and dad, and they're in Hell. Angels can't get to Hell."
"The only other person who knows where I am is... Oh no." Suddenly, a realization hits me, and I feel a pit forming in my stomach. "No, it can't be..."
I hear a whisper in my ear, sending chills down my spine. "Took you long enough." A cloth goes over my mouth, the scent of chemicals filling my nostrils. I try to fight it, but my strength fades quickly. Darkness creeps into the edges of my vision until everything goes black.
