Chapter 58: Thank You
"Okay, so we make sure we get your dojos back."
"All of them."
"We can't guarantee that."
Chris Bradford grits his teeth, his hands clenching into fists. Leonardo crosses his arms and stares him down, as if daring him to try anything. Then, Chris relaxes and sighs.
"Can you help me get the dojo in New York back?" he asks, struggling to keep his voice even.
"Yes," Sarina cuts in. "I can pull some strings and get it working."
"Excellent." He smiles a little.
"So, why don't you read over the final agreements?" Raphael suggests.
Donatello clears his throat and readies his list. "As this treaty states-"
"Don't do the formalities. Skip right to the deals," Emery demands smoothly.
Michelangelo nods. "Yeah D, total snooze fest."
The once leopard woman looks to the turtle with surprise, her golden eyes flickering slightly.
Donnie laughs a little and tries again, "Emery and Tiger Claw will be given plane tickets so that they may go home to Asia."
"Good." Tiger Claw nods, adjusting his eye patch.
"We will secure the Bradford dojo and bring it back to its former glory."
Bradford nods curtly. The other humans shift a little.
Donnie sighs, scratching his head. "The other details are still unsure."
"I want help in finding a suitable place to live," Xever points out, fluffing his hair.
"Right. I'll get Taylor and Annalise to help you job hunt."
Raph growls at the thought of his wife walking around with Xever, but he quickly stops and returns to being silent.
"Karai would like plane tickets to Japan," Destiny points out.
Karai nods. "I would like to start my new life there."
Leo glances over Donnie's shoulder at the list. "Zeck and Steranko...you two shouldn't go back to being thieves."
Zeck frowns a little. "Well, I don't know what else to do. Stealing was my only talent, G!"
"Ever thought about the circus?" Destiny comments out of the blue.
He glances at her with confusion. "Circus?"
"You're good on those laser tightropes. What if you did that?" The wolf-raven shrugs. "Just a suggestion."
Zeck seems to ponder this. As he does, Steranko raises his hand.
"And...for me? Whats is our agreements?" he inquires.
"You want your collection back," Sarina reminds him. "Plus you want our aid in returning to your weapons deals and antique collecting."
"Da, cyborg girl's right."
"I will be glad to assist you with that," she furthers with a smile.
Leo straightens up, looking over each and every former Foot Clan mutant. "We only have one large request for all of you in return for what we will help you with. You will no longer harm anyone in our family, our children and every child they have in the years to come. Furthermore, we are allies from here on out. Should anything threaten the earth again, we will call upon you to help us fight." He holds his hand out to Tiger Claw, who stands at the head of the group. "So? Is it a deal?"
Tiger Claw smiles lightly, looking to Emery. "She is the one who should shake your hand."
Emery's surprise becomes noticeable once again, amazed that her brother is no longer overshadowing her. She nods, brushing her dark hair behind her ear as she steps forwards and shakes Leo's hand. A few more shakes are passed around between the other Hamatos and the ex-Foot ninjas, the feeling bittersweet.
"Sarina?" Leo beckons to her.
She steps forwards with a few envelopes. "I have some cheques here. They will allow for you to restart."
"Don't you need it?" Karai asks, her hazel eyes legitimately concerned.
"We've lived on far less, sis," Mikey says casually. "We're glad to help you dudes get your lives on track!"
Sarina hands one envelope to Emery and Tiger Claw and another to Karai.
"Those have information for flight bookings, plus the money," the white-haired woman explains. She looks to the others. "As for you, we will help with setting up bank accounts and getting you jobs."
"You are all far too nice," Tiger Claw comments. "Considering all we did to you."
The Hamatos look at each other briefly. Leo smiles weakly as he looks to the well-built Asian.
"Well, as our Sensei once told us, 'There is not a monster more dangerous than a lack of compassion'," he says. "I'm just trying to do what he would've done."
Karai looks away, her face pained once again. The other humans nod and look at each other, a silence settling over them.
"You know, I kinda like the idea of a circus," Zeck says, breaking the seriousness of the moment.
Steranko chuckles, the turtles, Sarina, and Destiny laughing a little too.
"We will see you soon," Bradford says. "To help with the house hunting and such."
"We will," Raph agrees.
They turn to head away down the tunnel, the others watching them go. Destiny tenses, feeling something bubbling in her chest that she can't contain. A memory from a long time ago, when she was fifteen, comes back to her.
"Your quest helped you, yes?"
"Yes." Destiny's face grows troubled for a moment. "But...I thought that the healing would never make me scared of Shredder again. Not mind-control, not torture, nothing."
Splinter allows a small laugh to escape him. "My child, healing is not about forgetting the hard times, it's about learning to live with them and allowing them to make you stronger. Did your quest not teach you that?"
The wolf-girl looks down, her tail curling around her. "It...it did, but..." She shakes her head. "I guess the fainting kind of freaked me out. The panic that came over me..."
"Those memories will always be there, Destiny, but as you grow older, you will come to realize just how much they shape you as a person. One day, perhaps, you may thank your foes for what they've done, because in a way, they made you who you are."
She scoffs. "I'm going to thank Emery for scarring me? I'm going to thank the Kraang for turning me into a mutant?"
"Your being a mutant is what caused you to meet us in the first place. You have a family because of what the Kraang did, do you not?" Splinter's russet eyes fixate on her, full of wisdom from the years.
"Emery!" she calls, moving forwards.
"Des?" Leo asks, confused.
The wolf-raven keeps going. Emery turns around, her face once again confused. Destiny moves to her, smiling a little.
"Thank you."
Emery's face slackens a little. "You're thanking me? For what?"
Destiny smiles a little as her father's words echo in her memories. "For...making me who I am."
She runs a few fingers over her face scars absentmindedly, the woman's expression growing guilty. Destiny holds her hand out to her, but Emery has a different idea. She hugs her, the movement foreign and unexpected, but rather nice.
"I hate you, dog," the once leopard says lightly.
"I hate you too, cat," the wolf returns with a laugh in her tone.
Emery pulls away, waving once more before she turns and runs after her group. Destiny smiles once more, feeling as though peace has been made at last.
