Chapter 46: Everything According to Plan
The Hamatos instantly split off, trying to gain vantage points around the space. Destiny and Leonardo dash off one way, Leo's breaths coming in short pants as he stares at Shredder.
"Impossible...he fell off the roof. I saw it," he mutters.
"He isn't human anymore. It's like he was fused with..." Destiny trails off, her bùjú still flashing in the dim lighting. "If Emery got to him in time and mutated him-"
"HEADS UP!"
They both duck as a Foot bot goes sailing past their heads. Casey winks and sticks his thumb up as he skates away. Leo and Destiny split off to take on their opponents. Emery meets up with Destiny immediately, knives spinning.
"Well? What do you think of my accomplishments?" she asks. "Do you like how I used that special little bit of white mutagen I found?"
"Like you need my approval," the wolf-raven returns smoothly, clashing their weapons together. She doesn't let on to her confusion about the white mutagen. Zilla was the last person who had the last bit of mutagen, so how Emery found it supposedly doesn't add up.
"Enthral me with your mediocre thoughts," the leopard taunts further, evading Destiny's blade as she skims the tip of her ear.
"I don't get it, honestly," she snaps. "After all, you're in such a position of power now...what happens once Shredder wants his position back? Do you go back to being the loser little sister that could never leave the shadows?"
She growls, but her eyes flash with uncertainty. "Bite your tongue, dog."
"Make me, cat."
They shout and attack one another again.
Not surprisingly, Fishface is duelling with Raphael nearby.
"You have grown old, my friend," the pink creature teases. "How many grey hairs have you plucked?"
"As many as your mother has, you sushi plate!" the red-masked turtle snaps, lunging for the mutant with his sais flashing.
Fishface deflects the blow with his knife, grinning widely. "Ah, it's good to fight you again, Raphael."
"Wish I could say the same," Raph grunts, swinging his leg at him and landing a solid kick to his gut.
Fishface grunts and stumbles backwards, his beady yellow eyes narrowing as he launches back into the fight. Near them, Sarina zips around in the air, desperately trying to avoid Tiger Claw's guns as he follows her on his jet pack. He fires repeatedly, but she manages to dodge every one. She spins around, flying backwards and firing lasers at the striped cat that he also evades.
"You are fast, girl, but I will not miss for much longer," he snarls.
"Ha! I'd like to see you try," she taunts. He raises both his guns, making her laugh nervously. "Okay, not smart of me! Not smart!"
She goes zooming away, his bullets just grazing her skin as she urges her boots to go faster. Below her, Taylor and Casey go back to back, surrounded by Foot bots. They ready their baseball bat and hockey stick, smacking any bot that gets too close for comfort.
"Hey, maybe this won't be so hard!" Casey guesses to her, taking the head off a nearby assailant.
Annalise lets out a shriek as she avoids Rahzar's menacing claws, swiping her tomahawk at him as she leaps around like a squirrel on a sugar high. Right after, April screams for help as Karai chases her, the little swipes from the tessen causing the trained kunoichi no discomfort. Casey, in an attempt to hide the fear he's having for his wife's life, laughs nervously as Taylor shoots him an unimpressed look.
"Okay, I could be wrong," he says. He smashes another bit and looks to Michelangelo. "MIKE! HELP OUT APRIL!"
The orange-masked turtle looks towards the redhead, nodding curtly. He dashes over, defending her against Karai's attacks. From the cages above the floor, the Hamato teenagers' friends watch in terror, a few attempting to cheer them on. Baxter Stockman hovers next to the cages, given the responsibility of watching the prisoners.
Bebop and Rocksteady both attempt to pin Donatello down as the evasive turtle leaps around on the nearby support beams in a mad scramble to escape the duo. They keep chasing, Rocksteady's hammer smashing the ground behind him while lasers fly at him from Bebop's equipment.
Tiger Claw pulls the trigger on his ice gun, catching Sarina's boots. She careens out of control with a scream. She smashes into a wall and collapses, a groan escaping her lips. Donnie hears her cry and spins around, his russet eyes growing fearful.
"Comrade Bebop! Do the plans thing!" Rocksteady shouts.
"I almost forgot that, Big S! WHOO! EEEE!"
He fires at a weak metal beam, the laser causing the heavy pole to plunge to the ground and land directly on Sarina's left arm. She screams, her entire arm blazing with an intense and fiery pain. Donnie forgets all about the battle for a moment, rushing towards his wife desperately.
Rocksteady stamps the ground with his giant, heavy foot. There's a loud rattling from above as a metal cage drops down from the ceiling and traps the purple-masked turtle underneath. He gasps, pushing and shoving against it with all his weight, but it doesn't budge. He moves to the side closest to Sarina, unable to reach her through the bars.
"Donnie?" she whispers, tears trickling down her cheeks.
"Yeah, princess? I'm here, don't worry," he says, panic inching into his tone.
She squeezes her eyes shut. "I can't feel my arm..."
"Just...just hold on."
Bebop and Rocksteady fist bump, letting out mighty roars.
"YO! Miss E! Your plan has totally worked so far!" the warthog mutant oinks joyfully.
Emery smirks deviously as she and Destiny lock blades again.
"Hear that, wolf? You're doomed," she hisses.
Destiny doesn't respond, only flies upwards. With a roar, she launches downwards, blade swinging and slicing through the air with a high-pitched whistling sound. Emery just manages to dodge, the blade slicing her shoulder open. The leopard yowls in pain, but doesn't back down from the fight.
Leo pants heavily, two Foot bot heads impaled on his katanas. As he scans the room, he knows that the battle isn't turning out in their favour. Donnie and Sarina are down, everyone else is busily trying to defend themselves, and there's absolutely no room for actually playing the offensive.
You should've let the kids come, his conscience scolds.
He shakes his head, knowing that it's better if they don't get involved. He'd rather not risk losing them.
The blue-masked turtle rejoins the fight, trying to find Shredder. Unfortunately, the armoured man is nowhere to be found. To Leo's horror, he assumes that the Foot Clan master must be saving his energy until Leo's own team is too weak to defend themselves.
Scanning the room again, he already knows that that time will come soon. Sarina is passed out, her arm crushed and her body bruised. Donnie is caged, his green skin stained with the crimson of blood and dotted with bruises. Destiny is holding her own against Emery rather easily, but Tiger Claw is heading her way and that'll definitely make it harder for her. April, Casey, Taylor, and Mikey are faring pretty well against the bots and Karai, as well as Raph with Fishface, but Annalise's battle with Rahzar certainly isn't.
Before Leo can help any of them, humanoid Karai appears with a hiss, tantō at the ready. She jabs, prompting him to deflect as they begin their duel.
Annalise swings her axe at Rahzar desperately, but he only advances on her with malice glinting in his yellow eyes.
"I could use a snack," he snarls. "You look like a fine morsel."
"Get away from me!" she shouts, her face flushed with heat as she backs up.
Rahzar laughs, his claws glinting as he lunges towards her. She throws herself to the right, but his skeletal fingers fetch her stomach and tear her shirt open, slicing into the soft skin of her waist. She screams, collapsing to the ground and holding the wound as her axe clatters to the floor.
Mikey hears his wife's cry, spinning to face her. He almost freezes in fear at the sight of her, but forces himself forwards with a burst of adrenaline. Rahzar advances on Annalise slowly, as if torturing her with the idea of her own demise.
Just as he goes to slice her, Mikey leaps between them and blocks with his nunchucks, gritting his teeth as he shoves the dog back. He spins his nunchucks, no sounds leaving his lips as his baby blue eyes blaze.
"Keep your filthy paws off my wife," he says, his voice low and dangerous.
A creepy smile falls across Rahzar's face as he backs up. He howls, making Fishface look his way as he kicks Raph from his personal space.
"Part four is go," the skeletal werewolf mutant tells his partner in crime.
Fishface grins. As Raph attempts another jab with his sais, the mutant fish slips away, racing right towards where Casey and Taylor have taken on Bebop and Rocksteady. The red-masked turtle's breath hitches, noticing that his wife's back is turned to the enemy.
"TAYLOR!" he shouts. "LOOK OUT!"
She spins around just in time to see Fishface's wide pink mouth close around her head. His fangs sink into her shoulders, poisoning her instantly. The enemy mutant releases her, the dark-haired woman falling to the ground with a thud.
"NO!" Raph screams, barrelling towards them with his teeth gritted in a fierce growl. "I WILL FILLET YOU!"
Fishface only chortles, feeling proud of himself as he reengages the turtle. Meanwhile, Rocksteady smashes his hammer into Casey, sending the hockey player turned sports announcer into the wall. He slumps, groaning softly, and April wastes not time in rushing to his side.
Emery lets out a chilling cackle as more of her plan goes through perfectly. The other Foot Clan mutants join in as Shredder almost smiles beneath his helmet from his post above the scene.
Destiny zooms into the air, trying to catch her breath as she surveys the battle below her. Sarina and Donnie are no longer battling, both injured and immobilized. Taylor and Annalise are both down, prompting Mikey and Raph to play the defensive card and no longer focus on fighting and instead keep their attention on their wives. Casey and April are also down, April's only focus on reviving her husband from his unconscious state. The only mutant left is Leo, who desperately tries to talk some sense into Karai as she fights him maliciously.
Destiny grits her teeth, knowing that this had to have been the plan Emery was talking about. For a moment, the wolf-raven almost admires her cleverness. She snaps out of it, folding her wings and dropping into a dive towards Emery and Tiger Claw. At the last second, she unfolds herself and smashes her foot into Tiger Claw's jaw, knocking him to the floor. She lands, feeling her feet ache at the hard impact.
Emery growls. "You've lost. Surrender."
"It's not over yet, Emery. Just you wait," she pants, trying to ignore the cuts and bruises lacing her tired body.
In a flash, she morphs into her hulking wolf form. She snarls, her wild green eyes like flames against her black fur. She stomps her paws, the claws ticking on the concrete flooring.
"Let's play," she says.
She lunges forwards, fighting back with a new ferocity. Emery immediately turns and races to the other mutants, wanting the bigger males to fight off the ravenous wolf. They listen to her unvoiced commands immediately, attacking Destiny. The wolf evades most of their attacks and returns them with equal vigour, but she feels her body growing more and more tired.
Leo notices her dilemma, looking back at his older sister once more. He sheathes his katana and holds his hands up.
"Karai, I don't know what Emery did, but you've got to stop," he begs. "Please, you have to remember! It's Leo, your little brother!"
She stops, her face slackening a little. She sheathes her tantō, looking almost as if she's remembering what he's talking about. Her snake-like hands slither towards the turtle, who tenses a little but still doesn't attack.
The softness in her face disappears as her serpentine arms secure around his body. He grunts, struggling against her, but his attempt is futile. She pulls him closer and closer, her forked tongue flicking out at him.
Then, just as Destiny turns around, Karai leans forwards and kisses him. She pulls away after a solid three seconds, spinning the blue-masked turtle from her grip and watching him stumble away. He babbles something incoherent before collapsing to the ground, poisoned.
Something inside Destiny snaps as she lets out a terrifying roar, one that sends even Rahzar, Fishface, Rocksteady, and Bebop cowering a little.
"THAT IS MY HUSBAND, YOU CONNIVING SNAKE!" she howls, launching at the snake woman.
Karai morphs into her serpent form and hisses, waving her venomous hands at the jet black animal. A voice from behind stops her, making her blood run cold.
"Oh Destiny?" Emery calls in a sing-song voice. "Can't you see? You're all alone."
Destiny looks around, realizing that she is indeed alone. Most of her team is knocked down, while a mere three of them are still in fighting condition. Even with that, Raph and Mikey are both kneeling over their wives and trying to help them as best they can, like with April and Casey.
Destiny is truly alone.
"Oh...sewer apples," she cusses under her breath.
