Chapter 2 - Unmasked
Oliver looked at her in shock, giving a few steps back. She smiled at him and pointed to her eyes.
Of course!
X-Ray vision.
She could see him under the hood and suddenly he felt really nervous about it.
- Sorry, but I had to – She said, trying to avoid the fact that he had a really impressive muscled body with a lot of scars and bruises on it. She blushed.
He noticed.
"Two could play that game", he though as he smiled and stared into her eyes
- I know about your powers, great interview by the way, you could as easily give them your home address – He noticed her stare – But... There's anything else you can do that you didn't mention there... Kara?
It was her turn to be shocked. She had her x-ray vision, of course she knew about him but how on Rao's name he knew about her? As far as she knew, about what she had researched, he was a human with no powers.
- I... I don't know what you're talking about.
- Please, the glasses and the different hair are a terrible disguise. But... That's not the only things that made me be sure of it.
- How? – She said, crossing her arms, feeling her heart beating fast. She was really nervous now. – No one in my city figured it out.
- They didn't spend 5 years on an Island doing everything they could to survive, visiting not nice places, dealing with awful people, learning a thing or two here and there...
The island!
Of course, she couldn't even try to imagine the things he had been through, and the fact that he survived and was, for some reason, risking his life to protect his city – not in the greatest way by the way, but still. Of course he had skills.
- So I guess the interview talk was just an excuse to come here?
- No, that was legit – Kara said, staring nervously – Miss Grant wants that profile on you, I just volunteered because I wanted to see you in person.
- Ok... - He said, putting his arms behind his back - I guess we can agree that is for our bests interests we keep our identities a secret – He said, analyzing her body language, noticing she got a bit more relaxed as soon as he said it.
- Yes, it is. – She reached for his hand. – I don't like your methods, but yes.
- Kara, we are not the same. My world, this city... Is way darker than National City. Corruption, violence, all bad things spreading everywhere...
- I see violence all the time, Oliver... I still don't kill.
- Me neither... I mean, not anymore – he added as he saw the look in her face – A very good friend of mine reminded me that there is another way. – He shook her hand back.
Kara gave him a tiny smile and nodded with her head. She turned her head to the side, as if she was trying to pay attention on something Oliver had no idea what it was, cause he couldn't hear it.
- Someone needs me... I have to go – She turned and jumped up, flying away.
Oliver kept staring, noticing she could hear someone from really far away. He heard Diggle calling him on the comms and turned his back on.
- Is everything ok?
- Yes. – He said as he left the rooftop – I think we have a new ally.
Oliver spent the next day deciding to go forward with his plan of opening a club, at least he would have an excuse to stay away every night without people asking him where he was spending his nights. The one - night stands excuses weren't working anymore and he knew it.
He also thought that once he confronted Supergirl, knew more about her, his curiosity would be satisfied, but it made things worse because it wasn't enough. He spent a lot of his day thinking about it, until something crossed his mind and he just hoped it would work. She knew who he was now, he was an idiot to think she wouldn't figure it out, being a powerful and beautiful alien, he added on his mind.
Later that day, Tommy stopped by at the Queen mansion, finding Oliver talking on the phone, looking like he was about to punch someone. As soon as he hung up, Oliver smiled at Tommy, greeting him.
- It's everything ok? – Tommy asked, worried
- Yes, it's just... Annoying bureaucracy to be able to open my club.
- Oh, so you'll actually do it? Great... Where? – He asked excited, already thinking about the possibilities and ideas.
- The old Queen abandoned factory. It's big enough, I think it will work. It worked for the pary. – Oliver said as he sat down on the couch.
- Listen, I have ideas... I think you'll like it. – Tommy sat by his side.
- I'm sure I will – he laughed, knowing his best friend would probably give him crazy ideas that would end up with someone being arrested.
Tommy also had more things on his mind and he spent the entire morning wondering if he should tell his friend. He looked at Oliver, with a bit of uncertainty is his eyes, took a deep breath and just decided to say it.
- I took your advice... About Laurel. – He smiled excitedly – She agreed on going out with me.
- That's great – Oliver looked surprised at his friend – I'm happy for you guys. And surprised you decided to settle down... You did right?
- It means a lot, man. – He said – And yes, I did. I don't want to hurt Laurel and I really like her... I just wanted her to know it somehow, you know? That I've changed... So I was thinking about throwing her a fundraiser to support her law firm, she told me earlier they were struggling...
- That's a great idea, she'll love it. If you need anything, I'm here for you.
Tommy smiled, thanking Oliver, but couldn't help noticing there was something off with him, like his mind were far away from there. Since he came back, he had been like this, and Tommy worried about his time on the Island affecting him more than anyone thought it had.
- Is everything really ok? You seem off...
- Nothing, I'm just curious... About Supergirl being here... - He knew why she was on his city, but he couldn't stop thinking about how little information he had and how much he wanted to know more so he had to lie to his best friend. Again.
- Oh... Well, I know she's hot... - Tommy laughed and his smirk vanished from his face with the stare Oliver gave him – I'm still serious about Laurel, but I'm not blind...- He said but Oliver still had his death stare on - I won't hurt her, I really changed, relax...
Oliver thought about it. Yes, he worried about Laurel; he knew he did her a lot of harm, taking her sister with him on the Gambit. He felt responsible for her death and knew how much Laurel suffered. The slap she gave him the other day told him that.
She was a bit more friendly to him since she had to bust him out of prison for being accused of being the vigilante, and he had a feeling that one day they would be friends again, he just didn't want to push it. So yes, he cared.
Tommy wasn't wrong, tough.
The night came fast and Oliver was already in his hood, with his quiver on his back and his bow on his hand. He told Diggle he would take a look around the city, but Diggle had a feeling that was one of Oliver's BS. He knew him too well by now. He just nodded and watched Oliver leave.
Oliver went back to the rooftop he met Supergirl and took a look at the view around him.
- I want to talk to you – He said, knowing she would hear him.
He stood there, watching over his city and waiting. It didn't take too long for him to feel her presence. He turned around and saw her smiling at him, with curiosity filling her bright blue eyes.
He found out he really liked seeing that smile, but just nodded with his head.
- I wanted to tell you I accept your offer... About the interview.
- Oh... really? – Kara looked surprised
- With one condition... Have dinner with me.
He noticed her cheeks becoming red and smiled mentally.
- Hum... ok – She said
- I see you in at 9, if that's ok to you – He said as he gave her a card with an address – The best restaurant in town.
- Oh, ok...- She wasn't expecting that at all, but she wondered why Oliver Queen wanted to have dinner with her. Her curiosity got the best of her, also, she knew she had just 1 hour and a half to go back to her hotel and get ready, she couldn't show up as Supergirl anyways, but she had super speed so it was fine - I'll... See you there
Oliver stood at the door of the restaurant, wearing a dark and long sleeved social grey shirt, black social pants. It was 9 o'clock already and he saw her coming down the street towards him. Kara had a dark blue and knee length flare dress with a velvet black bow on its waist and black heels. She carried a small black purse with her and had her glasses on, her hair in a side braid ponytail style.
- You look great. – He said, offering his arm to her.
Stunning was the right word, he knew, but he wasn't going to let her know it. She held his arm with one hand and gave him that smile he learned he liked so much.
- Thank you... You don't look so bad – She teased as they got inside.
Oliver told the hostess he had a reservation and she welcomed them and guided them to their table upstairs. It was a quite private area, Kara noticed. Probably only the biggest names of the city got to reserve that table, since it was the only one on the upper floor, in a cozy environment. They sat down and the waiter took their orders.
- I wonder what the occasion is - Kara stared around, not able to contain her curiosity.
- You're new in town, I wanted to show you the best restaurant here as a thanks for your help.
- I appreciate it – Kara said – But I have to warn you... You're about to see something...
- What? – He asked, already feeling comfortable.
- I eat... a lot. I kind of need it.
- I figured it – He smiled – That's ok.
For someone that strong, moving at super speed and all, it made sense she would need to consume a lot of calories. She let a small laugh out.
- I'm curious – He said lowering his voice, knowing for sure only her could hear him – I saw you revealed yourself to the world a few weeks ago, maybe a few days before I came back... How was that? I mean, is not every day you see someone grabbing a plane with their bare hands and saving it from hitting a bridge. That was impressive –
- My cousin used to do it before me...
- If I tell you I've never noticed would you believe me?
Kara looked surprised at him. It was the first time in her entire life that she heard that. Usually people would admire her cousin, compare her to him or even insinuate she was just trying to be like him.
- Never?
Oliver nodded with his head.
- Well... That's new. – She said, still surprised.
- See, before the island I wasn't on my best behavior...
- I know. I've seen the articles – she said as she took the jar of water on their table and poured it to her glass, taking a sip. – Really not your best moment... One of the reasons I was surprised to know... you know.
- Yes. Back then, I was an idiot, I did a lot of things I'm not proud of, I could barely see what was happening inside my own house...
Kara noticed the shift on his eyes but kept listening.
- So I was surprised to learn that Superman was already doing his thing in Metropolis before I went away...
- Well, answering your question, it was... amazing
Oliver noticed her eyes sparkling as she described the experience. He could have a clear image on his head about what she was telling him. He wondered what would that feel like.
- It was a good scared... You know that thrill, when you're about to kiss someone for the first time and you feel that rush through your entire body?
Now Oliver had a vivid clear image of what she was talking about. He noticed her awkwardly shifting on her seat, adjusting her glasses.
- My sister wasn't happy at first... She was scared of anyone finding out about me. At lot happened, but now I work with her at the DEO. I've been training there with her... It has been nice... Hard but nice.
- Hard? Why?
Kara had no idea why she felt like she could trust Oliver. She was curious about him too and wanted to ask him the right questions, so before she decided to tell him about the one thing that could harm her, she decided to be sure first.
- First I want to know something more about you. The media says a lot of things, and I'm not 100% they're all accurate. I mean, you are a bit crazy, but I don't think you're a psychopath as they say... So tell me – She rested her arms on the table – Why you do this?
Oliver knew deep down he wasn't sure if he was ready to tell her everything. He was still processing a lot of what happened, still having nightmares, still learning how to deal with his traumas and be around people, he still had issues to trust a lot of people... But he knew somehow she was someone he could open up even if only for a bit. He remembered the advice Thea gave him, about finding someone who he could talk to and maybe, he could talk to Kara. She knew what it was like to live a double life, just like him, and for what he knew about her, the few things he new anyways, she had her own traumas to deal with too.
She could have the truth. At least one piece of it.
- I told you that you don't now my city...The truth is that I didn't even know it too, at least not until the accident happened. A lot happened there, many things I'm not ready to talk about yet... But what I can tell you is that I've learned that my dad wasn't who I thought he was. He did a lot of bad things and before dying, he asked me to right his wrongs. He told me about what was happening in this city and when I came back and saw it... I knew what I had to do. And I'm trying my best to honor my father's wishes.
- I can't even imagine what you've been through... - She said, noticing on his voice he was telling her the truth. She could tell it was hard for him to talk about the years he spent away and she knew for sure it had done something to him. She knew trauma when she saw one because she was also still dealing with hers. She knew it wasn't easy. – Well... Kryptonite – She almost whispered and Oliver looked at her confused. – My training. DEO uses pieces of my home planet to make it a fair training, but not enough to hurt me.
- Your weakness...
Kara looked at him, startled. How could he know so much about her? She had her suspicions but she wanted him to confirm it.
- Everyone has one – He said – But yours was actually not that hard to find out. Someone posted a clip of Supergirl facing some weird guy and he had green rocks on his hand. I did some digging and found out that when your planet exploded, pieces of it fell on Earth.
- Damn it cell phones... - She teased, making him smile.
- And social media... There's a lot of my wild days out there, not fun – He said, making her laugh
- Oh, I know... - She said teasing him – I've seen some things...
Their meal and drinks finally arrived and Oliver noticed the size of Kara's 3 plates of food. She wasn't joking when she told him she ate a lot. As soon as the waiter left, they kept talking about the double life they lived; Kara told him a few things about her home planet and about how she fell on Earth. Oliver could tell that wasn't easy for her to talk about and understood that was one of her own traumas.
She literally understood him.
- And now Alex trains me, because she told me I can't rely on my powers. If anything happens, I need to be ready to fight back. So that's why I'm doing it.
- Your sister is smart. – He said, finishing his drink
An idea crossed his mind out of sudden.
- How many days are you staying?
- Here? Well... Miss Grant reserved the hotel for me for the entire week. She told me it was probably not going to be easy to convince you and she wanted to make sure I could. I leave next Monday. Why?
- I was wondering... Would you like to train with me?
- With you? I'm not sure if I want to learn how to rip limbs from a person, Oliver – She joked
- You won't – He laughed with her, knowing she wasn't entirely wrong, but of course he wouldn't teach her that – I just think you have a lot of potential... And your sister is right; you need to know everything you can to not depend on your powers.
- Well she did tell me she thought your fight style was really good, even if she thought you were a lunatic – She smiled, noticing Oliver's reaction.
- See? Smart
- Well, I am here 'til next Monday, so... Why not? Can we start today?
Oliver looked surprised at her. He could see in her eyes she was excited for it and he had to admit to himself he was too.
- First we need to adapt my bunker, so it's a fair training – He smiled – Just tell me how and we'll have everything done by tomorrow night... Then, we start.
- Ok – She took a sip of her drink and leaned closer so her face was closer to his.
She told him almost in a whisper what he needed to know and smiled at him.
- Consider it done – He smiled back.
Oliver and Diggle spend good part of the next afternoon adapting the bunker with the things Diggle managed to get.
- Are you sure this is a good idea? – Diggle asked
- Well, she knows about me and I know about her. We agreed on keeping each other secrets... And something tells me she can be trusted. She wouldn't admit she has a weakness like that unless she wasn't. It means she also trusts me, so I think is only fair we do the same.
- I agree. – Diggle said – I'm not talking about it, man...
Oliver stopped to notice the look Diggle gave him.
- No... It's nothing like that.
- I didn't say anything...
- I know that look... - Oliver laughed – I'm not trying to seduce her or anything... I know I have a bad reputation, but have some faith... I'm not the same idiot I was before.
- I know, I can see that – Diggle said
- The thing is... When I confronted Laurel as the Hood, and she told me it must be lonely to live the life I live, having to protect everyone I care about... I thought about that for a while. She was right. It's not easy, I lied every day for the people I love and no one understands what I've been through because they can't know. – Oliver finished installing the stuff Kara told him to get – And even if you know, at least a part of it... Is still hard to understand. I know you do better than the other people in my life; you've been at the war... But the island... That was something else. And I don't know why, maybe because she also has been through heavy things in her past, but is easy to talk to her. To be myself and not lie. To know someone out there knows what this life is like. I've been curious about her since the day I saw her holding that plane on TV, and talking to her made me realize I was right. I hate to admit it, but it's nice to know someone else gets it.
- I see... Well, it's admirable what she does. – He said in the most honest tone he could use – Just be careful, man... And I'm not talking about with your life... I'm talking about your heart.
Diggle left the bunker as soon as they finished setting it up, leaving Oliver alone with a billion different thoughts on his mind.
Oliver went out to finish things to be able to open his club soon, he had so much to deal with, he even agreed to hire Tommy to work with him, and since he knew his friend needed a job because his father had cut him off. He had a long day of meetings and negotiations and was looking forward to start training Kara, for his surprise.
Diggle was at the computer at the bunker, keeping an eye on what was happening in the city, just in case it needed their help. Far at the back of the bunker, in the training area, Oliver sparred with a dummy, lost in his thoughts. He felt a whoosh of air that almost gave Diggle a heart attack and stared at Kara, standing there, in her Supergirl suit, looking excitedly at them as she waved hi. She looked at Diggle, feeling bad about scaring him.
- I'm sorry – She said and Diggle just nodded with his head, smiling.
- Its ok, I'm just not used to this... - He said – It's nice to meet you, Supergirl.
- It's ok, you can call me Kara – She shook her hand – It's nice to finally see the Hood Cave. – She said, taking a look around after noticing Oliver was standing shirtless there only with the pants of his suit on, and she tried to keep her eyes away.
- No, we're not calling it that – Oliver said
- Well, since you guys won't need my help in case anything happens, I'll go home. I promised Carly I would take her and my nephew out to dinner.
Diggle got up and gave Oliver a funny look, leaving them to train alone. Oliver just shook his head and stared back at Kara.
- So... Ready? – Oliver said as he turned the kryptonite devices on, filling the room with just the right amount of it, enough to make Kara more human.
- I was born ready – She said, looking confidently at him.
In just a few minutes, Kara was with her back on the floor for the 4th time already. She looked annoyed at him as he held her neck slightly, just showing her the way a person could take her down as he showed her. He got up, helping her get up by holding her hands and pulling her up.
- Ok did you have some martial arts instructor all this time you've been away?
- You have no idea... - Oliver said as he prepared to block her attacks again.
- Ok... - She said, already knowing she wouldn't get a more detailed answer.
She was sure that was one of the things that made her feel so curious about him. Oliver was a mysterious man, even if she knew his secret and a lot already about him, at the same time she felt like she knew nothing. Kara managed to hit a few times but it didn't take long for her to be once again, with her back on the ground. She got up one more time, starting to feel tired, but she wouldn't rest until she managed to beat him.
Oliver was finding it all amusing, the way Kara kept trying to hit him anyway she could, and failing all the times. He reached for her arm, pulling her in so her back slammed against his chest and he had one of his arms on her neck and the other held her strongly, keeping her from moving her arms.
- You need to stop attacking blindly – He said near her ear while keeping her from moving at all – You are making it easy for me to block any of your moves.
She felt something funny down her stomach and tried to ignore it, focusing on his words. He let her go and she turned around to face him.
- You need to study your opponent – He said, staring at her serious. – This way, you can anticipate their moves and surprise them.
- Ok... Study your opponent – She repeated it, taking a few steps backwards. – Surprise them...
She was determined this time. She kept analyzing every one of Oliver's move while she tried to attack him, and suddenly she stopped. She took a look at him, slowly from head to toe. She noticed he was starting to feel a bit tired by the way he was breathing, his lips parted. She noticed the way he had his feet on the ground, ready for any quick move he would need to block her. She smiled, and remembered something Alex had taught her. In a quick move, she took him by surprise, taking advantage of his tries to block her again with his arms, she moved faster, twisting his arms as she used one foot to make him lose balance. As soon as he was falling down, she jumped fast, holding both his arms above his head, each of her knees around his waist, trapping him on the floor.
- Like this? – She asked, starting to feel her breath becoming more erratic.
He had to admit, she was really strong, even with her powers weakened. In a quick move, he moved his torso up, getting rid of her hold on him, rolling them on the ground as he reached for her arms, locking them behind her back, trapping her against his chest on the floor.
- More like this – He said, close to her ear.
Kara felt his beard near the skin of her neck and shivered, trying her best to keep her cool. Oliver let her arms a bit lose and she turned underneath him, staring at his blues eyes with her back on the floor once again. He impulsively took a few strands of hair from her face while they both tried to catch their breath, in silence, just staring at each other. Kara looked down at his chest, noticing she had one of her hands there and blushed, retrieving it back. Oliver slowly got up and held his hand to help her up.
- Ok... great first day – Oliver said as he grabbed a towel from the chair near the computer, throwing another to Kara.
- Yes... Great – Kara looked awkwardly to her feet as Oliver turned the devices off.
She slowly felt stronger, her powers fully charged now.
- I'll... go now. I see you... tomorrow? I guess.
- Sure, tomorrow – Oliver smiled at her and she nodded with her head, super speeding away.
Oliver let a breath he had no idea he was holding, out. He went back home, grabbed something to eat and went to his room. He was still feeling glad he was sleeping on his own bed now. 5 years away from the comfort of his home made him appreciate it every single day. He took a look at his cell phone and saw a message from Diggle, from hours earlier.
"If I didn't know you any better, I would say you're smitten..." Oliver read it, putting his phone away as he laughed. "Diggle had a good sense of humor, who could tell?" he thought after letting his body down his bed, his back resting on the pillows.
"Maybe Diggle wasn't that funny?" the question popped up and Oliver ran his hand through his face, and hair, taking a deep breath and then letting it out. It has been indeed an interesting first training as he turned the lights out and tried to get some sleep.
The problem was: he couldn't.
Diggle told him to be careful and only now Oliver fully understood it, but truth was he couldn't help feeling some sort of relief. He knew now what drew him to Kara and made him thirsty for more knowledge about her. It was the fact that he finally, after so long, felt a connection to someone, true understanding between them. He took a good look into her eyes, and saw it: understanding. It was refreshing to finally be his true self, not having to lie and hide. Yes, she had that infuriating glare when she disagreed with him and a bit of snarkiness that he noticed it drove him crazy, but that was the fun about her. Because deep down, he had a feeling she cared. She saw the world in a different way than him, he was aware of it, and it was admirable, knowing she also had been through trauma, how she managed to stay infuriating positive about everything. He had to admit he was enjoying getting to know her a bit more and hoped one day he could do the same, and share a bit more about his past. He took his time with that, knowing the last thing he wanted was to scare her, even if she didn't seem to scare that easy.
His eyes started to close, slowly, as he fell into a deep sleep.
It felt like summer. More like burning summer. It was definitely as hot, he knew it, cause he felt like his skin was burning, but a good burn.
It was definitely a good burn.
He was a bit confused about what exactly was happening, but all he knew is that he couldn't stop, not now.
He sat on the bed with her, completely aware they were both almost naked, she sat by his side, almost on his lap and he felt her sweet lips against his, moving in a slow pace and giving him more room to be a bit bolder, adding his tongue to the mix and starting what felt like an epic battle for dominance. She leaned in full of want and they shared a deeply wild kiss as he strongly held her hair in the back of her neck, his other hand on her back, sliding down her waist until he reached one of her legs and held it, bringing it over his hips in a single move. She felt the warmth of her skin against his. He broke the kiss apart, their nose brushing each other's as he tried to catch his breath. He took a quick look around and she took advantage to bring her lips to the base of his neck. He couldn't recognize where they were, all he knew was that it was a bedroom. He kissed her once again, the desperation exhaling from them both as they held each other as close as possible. He slowly covered her body with his as he guided her back to rest on the pillows, pressing his hips against hers as he felt her hands slowly traveling down his chest to his abs.
Oliver practically jumped from his bed, looking around confused. He saw his bedroom, in the dark and he was alone. His hands covered his face, went to his hair as he scratched the back of his neck, taking a deep breath.
- Damn it! – He thought, realizing what he was dreaming about,
He was so screwed.
He got up and went to his bathroom, feeling the desperate need of a cold shower.
He was beyond screwed.
