Chapter 1 - Oliver Queen is alive!
NOTES: I know I said I wasn't going to write a long story anytime soon because I want to focus on my collections: The Emerald-Steel, Elseworlds and Scarlet-Canary (u can find them all on my profile), but I had this idea and it ended way too long to fit 3 separated parts on the Emerald-Steel collection, so I transformed it into a 3 chapter short story.
This is story happens in: Arrow season 1 – SG season 1 / Same Earth
I was going to finish the 3rd chapter and post it all, completed, but is really late in Brazil right now so I'll finish it tomorrow and post it here, so u guys don't need to wait to read it all ^^
Fun fact: Ep 6 from Arrow season 1 is called Legacies (the one I based for the 1st arc of this story). I had the idea of calling it before I remembered that.
Reminder: I'm Brazilian, we learn early to use – to mark dialogue in stories, so that's why I do it. I use " " to mark people reading texts, mails, whatever and thoughts.
Enjoy.

Oliver kept starring at the window of his room as the rain fell outside. He had a good view of the city skyscraper and looking down the window, he could see the garden of the Queen Mansion. He couldn't help feeling weird, like he was a stranger inside his own bedroom.
It has been a few weeks since he finally got home after 5 years away in hell, where he had to learn to survive and went through more trauma than any other human being should go through in life. He missed his friends and family, but he knew things were never going to be the same way as they were before he left on the Queen's Gambit, because now he had a mission.
His father sacrificed himself so he could live, he told him how much he failed his family and city, and how Oliver needed to right his wrongs. Oliver knew that as Oliver Queen he couldn't do much, so he took advantage of the fact that he got kidnapped along with his best friend, Tommy Merlyn, to create a new persona, someone who would terrorize every single criminal and bring them to justice, in a way no one else could do, not even the police. He knew the system was corrupt to its core, he knew there was no other way.
He started all of this alone but just a few days ago, he had to save the life of his driver John Diggle, who now knew his secret. He tried to convince Diggle to join his mission, and after a lot of arguing, he accepted.
Oliver was still recovering from his latest fight, his TV was on, there was something happening on the news but he wasn't paying attention to it. He kept staring outside, lost in his thoughts, when he heard a knocking in the door. He turned around and saw his younger sister walking in and starring at the TV.
- Incredible! – She said
Oliver didn't know what she was talking about and stared at the TV. They talked about a woman that saved a plane in National City and flew away before anyone could ever try to take a look at her and how Cat Grant, the queen of all media at that city, gave her the name of Supergirl. They discussed a recent interview that she gave to Cat Grant, an exclusive, where she revealed she was Superman's cousin. Oliver looked at Thea, still confused.
- I was away for 5 years... All of that happened while I was gone? We have super humans now?
- Actually, Superman was already out there, before you were gone brother. I think you were just too drunk or busy being a playboy with parties and all to notice what happened around the world. But she... She is new.
- That was...harsh.
- I'm sorry – Thea said – I really missed you. And messing with you – She laughed.
- Its ok, I probably deserve it. You're right; I was too busy being an idiot.
He glanced again at the TV. He had a lot to catch up, more than he realized.
- I'm glad you know it – She teased – But also... I hope you thought about what I told you. You really do need to open up to someone, Ollie.
- I know... I'm not there yet, but I promise you I'm working on it.
- Ok. Oh, Tommy asked me to remind you about your welcome back party you told him you wanted to do.
- Oh... There's that. Ok, thank you. I won't see you there by the way, you're underage.
Thea laughed and gave him a brief hug and left his room.
Oliver kept thinking about his plan for the night. He would use the party as an excuse and an alibi so he could go after the next person on this list. Now he had Diggle on his side, things would be a bit easier. He knew for sure he couldn't keep doing what he was doing all by himself, things would go south sooner or later.
Later at the party, the place was crowded with people Oliver was sure he didn't actually know, but since he was kind of famous now, everyone got curious and showed up.
- The man of the moment has arrived! – Tommy said as he hugged his friend – Listen, I've seen the twins came... Remember them? They can't wait to see you, I told them you would talk to them later.
- Maybe that's not the best time – Oliver said, knowing he had to make sure everything went as he planned. He couldn't risk innocent people getting caught in the crossfire.
- C'mon, Ollie. You spent 5 years away, came back and have been doing God knows what for weeks...
- You know my family wants me to take their company, I don't want it... I'm trying to figure it out what I want.
- It doesn't mean you need to be alone while you figure it out, if you know what I mean.
- How couldn't I? – Oliver laughed – You're not that subtle as you think you are.
Oliver smiled and went up the stage, welcoming everyone and thanking them for being there.
- I hope you guys have fun, cause God knows I will – He gave his best smirk towards a few women near the stage – Enjoy!
He kept greeting a few people, ready to get Diggle's message so he could start with his plan. They were right above the place he had chosen to train and be his operations center. He stood by the bar when he noticed a beautiful blonde coming towards him. She had her hair lose, glasses on, a black dress and a light beige coat over it. He was sure he never had seen her before, as he stared into her blue eyes.
- Hi. – She said as she reached for his hand to shake it – Welcome back.
- Thank you... You are? – He said, still trying to think if he had seen her before, but failing miserably.
- I'm Kara Danvers, from CatCo Magazine...
- From National City – He said finding that information a bit curious.
- Yes. I'm actually here to talk to you, we tried contacting you before, but we had no success, so Miss Grant sent me. We want to make a profile on you, for the magazine...
Oliver tried his best to smile in the most polite way he knew. He noticed his phone vibrating and took a quick look. Diggle's message finally came. He stared back at her.
- I don't have a great relationship with the press... I'm sorry I can't help you... I have to go now, there's something I need to take care of, but you're welcome to enjoy the party – He smiled once more, turning around and walking away.
Kara nodded with her head and watched him leave, as she turned her head slightly to the side, staring at the floor.
A tiny smile formed into her lips.
- "Wait 5 minutes and go" – Oliver read Diggle's message and put his phone back to his pocket as soon as he saw Tommy coming to him, with a huge smile on his face.
- So, I guess you finally heard me? I saw you talking to that gorgeous blonde back there...
- No. – Oliver smiled at him – It's not like that. I told you, I'm not ready to pursuit anyone right now, Tommy.
- Not even Laurel?
Oliver stood still, analyzing his friend's facial expression. He noticed apprehension, a bit of worry and remembered when he was hiding as the Hood, and heard Laurel and Tommy talking about the relationship they had while he was gone. He smiled, putting a hand on Tommy's shoulder.
- Not even her – He said and before he left, he added – But you should go for it, my friend.
Tommy stared in shock as Oliver left. He knew.
"How?" He asked himself.
Later that night, Oliver crossed one more name from his father's list and closed the small book, putting it on the table as he stared at Diggle.
- What? – He asked
- Nothing... Good work, man. I was just thinking that maybe we could try to expand the mission... There are a lot of good we can do in this city.
- I am no hero, Diggle. – Oliver said – There's a bunch of people on that list – He pointed at the book – That needs to know they failed this city. I can't get distracted from the mission.
- Oliver I'm not telling you to put that mission aside. I'm telling you we can, sometimes, also help more... Metropolis got a hero for themselves a few years ago, now National City has one... Maybe you could be what Star City needs to become a better place
- I'm not like them... The flying guy
- Superman
- Yes...and...
- Supergirl.
- I'm not like them, Dig! – Oliver said.
- You don't have to. But you can do some good with your skills, your own way. I don't know if you noticed, but there are a bunch of robberies happening in this city. I was trying to find out more, from what the police had and came up with information, if you want to take a look at it.
Diggle gave him the files and Oliver grabbed them, opening them and reading.
This wasn't the time for him to get distracted, the list was important; he needed to honor his father. He kept reading about the group of robbers and stared at Diggle. He took a deep breath, knowing if he said no, Diggle wouldn't stop until he agreed, so he decided to spare him from the annoyance.
- Ok.
Diggle smiled, victoriously.
- One robbery. I'm not saying we'll star fighting every crime happening in this city... But sometimes – He paused – we can try to do some good.
- Fine by me.
Diggle left after a while and Oliver was entirely alone at the bunker. He went to his computer and started to look for anything out in the media about the flying woman from National City. The TV didn't have a clear image of her and as soon as he saw her photo in one article, the one the TV mentioned about her interview with Cat Grant, and smiled to himself.
- There's something about her... - He murmured
He kept reading the articles, learning she was actually an alien from a planet named Krypton. Her planet exploded and she was sent to Earth to protect her cousin, got stranded in a place called Phantom Zone, in Space and then her ship got to Earth. She said in that interview that she wanted to make sure she was ready to help her city, because she knew how serious and important it was and yes, she committed a few mistakes, but she was learning. He saw some online footage of her facing aliens and criminals in her city.
- She's really new... - He commented as he analyzed a few more videos.
The next day, around 7pm, Oliver and Diggle studied their plan to stop the gang robbing banks until they found out were the next attack was going to be. Oliver suited up and left with Diggle, ready to kick some ass.
They reached the front of the bank, just as the gang was leaving and Oliver prepared to put an arrow on their van when shooting started. Gladly the streets were empty, so there wasn't any risk of someone getting shot by accident. Oliver deflected a bullet but one of the members of the gang shot him again and he was sure he was going to get hit when he saw someone materializing out of nowhere and he saw a pair of fingers catching the bullet, centimeters from hitting his face. He was caught by surprise and shook his head, seeing Supergirl right in front of him grabbing one of the guns from the hands of another member of the gun, and squeezing it with her hand as if it was just a piece of paper. A few members of the gang jumped on the van and drove away, but one guy was left behind, and while Oliver was processing what happened as the blonde stared at him, the guy got away.
- Are you ok? – She asked.
- Yes – Oliver said, using his voice modulator
He couldn't say anything else; she was flying after the van really fast. Oliver looked across the street just to see Diggle with his mouth hanging open, in pure and complete shock.
Oliver brought him back to the bunker cause apparently; Diggle forgot how to walk by himself. They got to the bunker and Oliver took his hood off, putting his bow and quiver on the table, still wondering what the hell had happened. He turned the TV and saw live footage of Supergirl reaching for the van, landing in front of it and putting her hands forward to make it stop. She got dragged for a few seconds, putting all of her strength into what she was doing, as the front of the car got ripped in half. She didn't have a single scratch in her, she just walked to the door of the van, ripping it with her hand as if it was nothing and using her super speed, and she knocked the driver and the rest of the gang out.
- Police reports say that Supergirl just dropped them unconscious at SCPD and flew away. – The woman in the news said.
Oliver and Diggle just stared at the TV in silence. Diggle decided to break it, staring at Oliver, still in shock.
- Did you see that?
- Yes.
- She ripped the van in half... just like that...
- She moved really fast... so she has speed, is super strong and can fly... - Oliver commented as he remembered the articles he read about her. He also knew she had heat vision, freeze breath, x-ray vision. But it was something else seeing it in person, for sure.
- She's bulletproof – Diggle said – Wow...
- Diggle, back to Earth – He said – If this is crazy for you, imagine how I feel knowing that her cousin has been around for a while and I've never even noticed.
- I know man... it must be a lot.
- Not...a lot. Just curious – Oliver said as he kept wondering why Supergirl was on his city in the first place. He tried to shake the thoughts from his mind – One guy got away...
- I've did some investigation, found that the gang is actually a family.
Oliver read the file Diggle showed him on the computer.
- Reston? I know this last name... - He said after he typed a few things – Here... Derek Reston, he worked for Queen Consolidated before my dad outsourced 1500 jobs to China. His family lost their home as result... I remember him because one day I went to talk to my dad on his office, and he was there, really angry, wanting my dado to do something because it was his fault they lost everything... And he was not wrong.
Oliver crossed his arms and stared at Diggle, with a serious face.
- I need to do something; it's my dad's fault they had to do anything they could to survive. I know what it feels like...
- What you're going to do? Convince the guy to stop doing it?
- Maybe it works... I feel responsible, Dig. I have to try.
Oliver found Derek at a bar in the Glades the place he went with his dad when he was a kid just to play games at the arcade they had there. Derek played cards with his friends and once the men left, he stepped forward.
- Do you mind if I sit in?
The guy kept starring at Oliver, in disbelief. They talked for a while about Oliver's return and how Robert Queen ruined Derek's life.
- My dad did really bad choices. I think now, if he could, he would have done different choices. But his time went up.
- Poetic – The guy said as he put his cards on his pocket. – But it won't get my house back.
- Listen, everyone can make really bad choices in life when they don't see another way... right Derek?
By the look Oliver gave him, Derek could tell Oliver knew about the robberies.
- I can't do much but offer you an apology and a job. One call from me and you start working right away. We have companies all over the world, you chose where.
- I think I have some pride left. – The guy said – I'm not charity for the son of the guy who screwed me over!
Oliver just nodded with his head, knowing the conversation was over. He got up and took a card from his pocket. He gave Derek the card.
- In case you change your mind... - He said and walked away, stopping near the entrance, with a strange feeling he was being watched. He took a look around, and thought for a second he was just tired.
He left the bar as Derek took a look at the card.
In the corner of the bar, in a table near the wall, Kara sat there, with her eyes full of curiosity.
At the bunker, Oliver and Diggle talked about Derek's situation and Diggle looked worried at Oliver.
- His family is in police custody; don't you think it was weird that he was at a bar, playing cards like nothing happened?
- I don't try to understand the mind of every person we face, Diggle... I have no idea, but he was there... - Oliver sighed, frustrated.
- I don't think he will call Oliver. A desperate man is capable of anything.
- I know... But I had to try. – Oliver said as he looked at the computer's screen – Which banks weren't attacked yet?
- Redwood United Bank, according to the police ... - Diggle said as he read the reports –What happened? – Diggle noticed Oliver staring at the screen with a strange look on his face.
- I'm just checking something... - He said in a mysterious tone.
They prepared for the mission: keep an eye on the bank, to see if Derek was going to attack again and stop him, before the cops did. Diggle stood in position across the street and Oliver was at the rooftop of a building also across the street. He had that familiar feeling someone was watching him and turned around, just to see Supergirl floating 2 or 3 meter from the ground, staring at him with her arms crossed on her chest. She looked him in a curious way.
- I hope you have better ways of approaching him tonight... - She said – Terrorizing people is never the best option.
- You don't know me – He said with his voice modulator on – You don't know the city...
- I have an idea...
- No, you don't. What are you doing here?
- I've been following this case... - She vaguely said, making him look suspicious at her.
- If you don't agree with my approach, you don't have to stay.
- I want to – She said as she turned her attention to the bank, noticing something was happening.
She narrowed her eyes to the building, using her x-ray vision.
- They are here... ready to move – She said and took a last glance at Oliver, flying fast towards the bank's entrance, grabbing Derek and lifting him with her.
- What... - Diggle said as he looked at the scene and back at Oliver at the rooftop.
Oliver barely had any time to think, in seconds she was back, smiling. For the first time in a long time, he had no idea what to say.
- He's in jail, with his family. Yes, I know that gang was a family, like I told you, I've been following this case... - She added, noticing the annoyance in his eyes.
- Why?
- Because I'm Supergirl... That's what I do, I stop bad guys, help people, keep the city safe...
- No... I saw you on the news the other night, saving that plane... - He said, lowering his bow and turning completely to stare at her – I saw you catching the van... Why?
- Because I'm Supergirl, that's what I do...
- Why are you here, in Star City? Helping me?
Kara took at look at him and a few steps closer.
- I heard about you, the mysterious vigilante terrorizing criminals from Star City. I was curious. They said you were a killer... It didn't make sense to me, a killer saving his city from criminals... So I got curious and came here... I help, because is who I am, no matter what.
She took one more step closer to him, putting her hands on her waist.
- I know you felt guilty for what happened to that family and to be honest, I didn't expected a noble gesture from this killer I've heard about, but then you tried to help that family... Oliver.
