One step ahead, One step back.

Space Station Unity Dawn

Max POV

After I woke up from my slumber, I first instinct was to get coffee from the cafeteria. However, my mood turns sour when I open the door and face reality that there was no coffee. I knew some sacrifice must be made so I with my head held high and a single tear down my cheek, I went and double check the solar panels. I wish the metal didn't rust so much, but I'm kind of glad that it's working. After checking all the panels, I look at the clock and Three hours have passed. Time really do fly by. With a million things I need to do and only god know how long we have, I went to the launch bay. This is my first time coming here yet I hope that something was different, there was still rust all over the room and some of the support pillars gave up. The ships we had have seen better days. Some of the wiring is exposed, Parts of the ship have clearly fall off the body, and I don't even want to look at the interior. As I continue my search for a space suit, I saw Mia sleeping in escape pod. She made a makeshift hammock and blanket. I kind of wish that I took more time to make my bed, but I still continue looking of what I need.

As I look around, all I see is junk, junk, and more junk. The junk I keep finding are damage beyond repair and using them might make things worse, so I just brush them to the side and keep walking. After I reach the locker room, some of the lockers are open and have nothing in them. There were a few that were shup and had rusted locks on them, but I refrain from take a look. I finally came across the change room and to my surprise, there was a suit. It was a bit too small, but beggars can't be chooser. I brought the suit to my workstation and began to inspect any damage. There were some small cuts on the suit and the helm needs a bit of welding, but I'm surprise that it still works. I grab my welding tools and some tools that Mia got me, and I began to work on it.

Nova POV

Finally, after some time I completed translating the book that Mia have given me. In the beginning, I was having a bit of complication on deciphering their letters. However, soon they became quite clear to me almost as if I could almost read them on my own. I manage to upload the information to the computer for it to be sent to Max to see if he could create a visor of some sort to automatically translate the letters for us. Luckily for me, the pain on the back of my head have begun to subside from the punch Mia have given me. For someone so small could be able to deal much damage is absolutely astonishing. I do not hold grudges for it is not in my nature, yet I should apologize to them for stepping out of line. I do not want to disturb their sleep, so I grab a seat on a chair and pulled out my data pad and switch the feeds on the surveillance drones I have at the ground level. I have a few scouting around the city, one 'free roaming', and 2 at least following the group the attack Mia during her first trip. The drones are able to bend light around itself to make it invisible and they almost produce no sound. Still, I find it hard to believe that the yellow one in the group could sense the drones. At first, I assume it was just coincident. However, he notices it again. I assume the drones were broken so I had them face each other and to my surprise they did not show up on the feeds. Following that event, I had increased the distance the drones should maintained and continue to take notes of them. Right before I write the information onto my data pad, the entire facility has gone into emergency lock down with red lights going off and an automatic speaker giving us direction.

"Please remain calm, all engineers please report to Airlock 3. Ple- "

The message just kept repeating itself. I assume something went wrong so I rushed over to airlock 3 to see what the problem is.

Max POV

After fixing the suit to be at least manageable to go into space, I put on the suit to see if there any other problem. The suit is a bit tight in the front, but other then that it seems fine. I was about to walk out of my workshop only to find Mia scaring the life out of me with Halloween prop of a bloody body with a knife through its head.

Max: MIA WHAT THE HELL? ARE YOU TRYING TO GET ME HAVE A HEART ATTACK?

Mia: Mwahaha relax, its only plastic Maximax.

Max: Mia that was not funny. Anyway, I need help with installing the solar panels. Help me out, and please put that away.

After the short exchange, Mia just tosses the prop into my work lab and closed the door. I scan the layout of the building and found the best place is to put the panels is on the third sectors. While walking there, Mia just keep making small talk until we got to the airlock. As soon as we got there, Mia set one of the panels on the floor while I was double checking the suit and the panels. For safety reasons, I told Mia to wear magnetic boots and a rope around something sturdy.

Mia: Umm why do I have to tie this around me?

Max: Safety reasons, also just in case happens. A funny story my dad told me once is that someone flew out of the airlock, but we manage to get him back onto the ship.

Mia: Wish I could have seen it.

Max: Because of it, we always have to be extra cautious when working outside. Now make sure the door closes behind me.

There are two doors before it led outside. The first room is to make sure all air is push back into the main room as to not let any air escape. The second door is more of a supply point where engineers can grab tools and head back outside without wasting anytime. I step into the room with my suit on and carrying multiple oxygen tanks and the solar panels. Once everything is inside, the first door closes and waited for the air to be sent back into the main room. The second door open and My body became lighter. It wasn't the first time I experience this, but I could never get used to the weird feelings of it. I strap the panels to second room to make sure it stays in place. I grab an oxygen tank and check the gauge. It said it was full, so I strap the canister to the side of my leg to not float around or worse cut the cord. With everything in place, the main door open and I headed to the side of the ship while carrying a panel like my life depended on it because I know if I let go, there will be no way for the ship to pick me up. About five minutes into the installation of the panels, I hear Mia talking to me over the radio.

Mia: MAXIMAX DID YOU FLOAT AWAY YET?!?!

Max: MIA ARE YOU TRYING TO GET ME KILLED?!?! Also no, I did not float away, but I appreciate it if you did not distract me from working on this so bye.

About midway through on working the second panel, my tank went into the red zone, so I made sure the panel stayed in place and went to the second room and switch out the tank. the stander method on switching the tank while outside is to connect the second tube on the other side of your leg. Once it connected, cut off the empty tank flow and discard the tank in a secure bin inside the supply point so we can reuse the tank in the future.

.............................................................................................

Time skip

I don't know how long I been doing this, but I'm almost done with this torture. After finishing installing the last panel, I slowly make my way towards the supply point. To my surprise, Mia was sitting down on the floor waiting for me.

Mia: It's about time, what took you so long?

Max: Got to make sure everything is secured so I don't go back out there. Now close the outside door for me.

Mia got up from the floor and walk over to the console by the wall. Soon after, the door that leads outside fully closed. I walk to the first room and again the second door closes, and air was beginning to seep in. I removed my helmet and got rid of the suit. I only remove the upper part of the suit because I wasn't wearing anything underneath because I was afraid that it will get too hot.

Mia: My my Maximax, I see you're gaining weight.

She was giggling, but I knew she was just joking around. Also, What weight could I gain? I haven't even eaten anything since the meeting.

Max: I could say the same thing abo-

Mia: Its not nice to talk to a lady like that, Max.

I can tell that she was getting pissed so I kept my mouth shut because I respect her as a friend, also I would like to keep my bones not broken.

Max: Anyway, let's check on Nov-

Almost on que, the room went into chaos and there was warring signal on the console. I rushed over to see what happen and the worst case scenario happened. I look at the door the lead to outside and it somehow started opening again. I told Mia to rush to the hallway and make sure to secure herself to something. I can feel the air from the building is escaping in the vents which just make the situation much worse. After a few seconds I gave up on closing and rush out into the hallway. After when we reach the hallway, I access the console by the door and put the room into lock-down cutting off both oxygen and power to the room. I also made sure to seal the door for added security, I guess I won't be reusing the tanks anytime soon. Thankfully, the room is built to withstand the suction power or else things would have went from bad to worse. Speaking from bad to worse, I see Nova is sprinting towards us and I could see a slight hint of death behind her. She stops in front of us and with her arm cross, I knew I had to choose my words carefully.

Nova: Care to explain what happen?

Max: The airlock malfunction so I had to lock-down the room. Sadly, we lost some oxygen.

When I mention oxygen, Nova begin to tense up and with the sense of authority she has me even more question.

Nova: What were you doing in Airlock 3?

Max: I installed the solar panels as promise. On the bright side, we have more stable power than expected.

Nova: At the cost of losing our precious air. Do you know how much air we lost?

Max: No, I don't know. I was about to go to the bridge to check how much we have left.

Nova: I shale be right behind you. Also, please for the love of god put on a shirt.

To not anger her any further, I put back the upper part of the suit minus the helmet and the three of us walk back to the bridge. On the way over, I can see nova is starting to get worried. I would be lying if I was calm about this situation, its like looking at my report card when I was a kid. When we reach the bridge, both Nova and I were huddling the main computer while Mia is sitting on one of the chairs. I couldn't believe my eyes; the unexpected event could cause this much damage.

Nova: Max...I-Is it p-possible to build an air p-purifier of some sort?

Max: Believe me, if I could I would have built it long before.

Nova: I...see... so...we have four days on this ship. I wonder if miracles could happen?

Mia: Why don't we search for a new place to live, like a cave or something.

Both Nova and I were taken aback by this crazy, yet exceptional idea Mia had.

Nova: Good Idea Mia. Why wait for a miracles when you could make them. I would need time for the drones to scout for a new base. Until then, Max try to attempt to make a purifier. If you could not make it within the next three days, then we are abandoning the base.

I really did not like the idea, but yet again we have no other solution so I'm putting all the luck in the world to build something that could be impossible. Yet somehow, I feel like it might just work.

Max: Luckily for us, I tried to build it before. I will need time to refine the prototype. I guess its time to crack open the books.

Agent HQ

Agent Three POV

Eight, Four, and I are waiting in the living room in cuttlefish shack waiting for any news if the human is going to show up.

Three: Man, why is this taking so long? We should expected to get a signal sooner, it been two days since we encounter the human.

Eight: Maybe they are laying low for a while? We did put a wanted poster on National television.

Eight did have a point, but there is something that concerns me.

Three: Four, what in woomy name are you still doing there? You are already healed.

Four: I was planning on going home, but Somehow this bed is way too comfortable to leave. Cuttlefish did say it was alright for me to sleep here for a few days. Also, why did we put up the human on television saying "very dangerous, stay away" or something like that.

Three: We didn't. We told Sheldon to keep this on a down low, but since the human went and rob the market down the street, police got involve that things escalated very quickly. They found a stolen cake in Sheldon shop so police believe that they need to spread awareness. Pearl and Marine had no choice to do it because their producer told them too. Anyway, I wish we have a way to contact them.

Eight: Just imagine, we could learn so much from them. How they live, what lost technology we could gain, fill in the missing gaps and clear speculation about their history, Music. I could not wait to talk to the human. Did you know that most of the buildings we have today was study and copied from the humans? Just thinking about learning lost knowledge just make me excited.

Three: I wouldn't count on it Eight, they could be violent in nature.

Four: I highly doubt it Three. If violent is in its nature, then it would have caused more damage sooner.

Just then, the phone rang. Eight went over and pick up the phone while I was talking to Four. Soon after Eight hand up and looked at us with a serious face.

Eight: Ready up, the octarians are making a move.

Four: About time, I was getting tired of sleeping on the bed.

I just roll my eyes at four comment.

Three: Where are we going?

Eight: Mt. Skip

.......................................................................................................

Time Skip

Third POV

Three, Four, and Eight after receiving a call, started heading towards Mt. Skip. Legends has it that Mt. Skip was one of the few key points that the octolings have during The Great Turf War. They have built an impenetrable fortress named Fort Stone that became a symbol of hope for the octolings during the time. Seeing that the fortress was constructed in a key location, the octolings were able to have a solid ground against the onslaught attacks that the inklings unleash. In the end, the fort was abandoned. To this day, it is a sight of history to the glory its once had. Legends has it that ghost of the fallen octolings still guards the castle waiting to defend the next attack. Agent Three Four and Eight are in deep in Octavio territory scouting said castle. Both Three and Four are hidden looking through binoculars waiting for an opening while Eight is off in the distance rechecking the inventory they have bring.

Three: I don't see any opening at all.

Four: A mote fill with deadly ink, a drop bridge that ink can't stick to, four octolings on each watchtower, the front of the castle is heavily guarded and reinforced. So... any ideas?

Three: Hmm...we could wait until it gets dark then mayb-

Just then, the three agents were suddenly attack. Luckily for them, the attacker misses their shots.

???: Well well well, look who we got here, two stupid squids. Octavio will be heavily happy if we capture you alive, so why don't you save us the trouble and the ink.

The octarian who was talking appears from the bushes a few meters behind them. She appears to be wearing a stander octarian armor with more paddings around both the body and legs. She doesn't have anything covering her face and, on her head appears to be kelp that defies gravity. Behind her appears 4 more octarians. Agent Four gave a smirk because each of them are wearing armor that are familiar to him and know their weakness (A/N Splatoon 2 octoling armor). Along with that, they appear to be wearing the sunglasses. In the intense standoff, Agent Four step forward with his Hero Shot behind his head.

Four: You know its rude to not introduce your name to new people, also how does that thing on your head works? Is it the wind that's keep it in the air or is it magic?

???: Why should I say my name to a splatted squid?

Four: That's a shame... really, maybe next time.

Just then, a splat bomb was thrown over agent four head and one in the forest.

???: SCATTER!!!

With the leader word echo through the minds of her companions, all but one manages to escape from the blast. Soon a battle has started, Both Three and Four are using the trees for cover and agent Eight is right behind them. With both Cyan and purple color ink shooting from both sides, Agent Three made sign language telling his companions to retreat. When the opportunity soon arrives, the three of them began to sprint to the checkpoint they mark earlier. Sadly, Agent Four could not escape from the leader of the octarians group and was slow down. Both Agent Three and Agent Eight tried to support Four by shooting ink to clear a path, However, the octarian squad isolated Four making sure to not let him escape.

Four: GET OUT OF HERE I'LL BE ALRIGHT!!!

Then the leader disables Agent Four making sure that her pray does not escape. At first Agent Three was hesitant to leave his companion behind, suddenly he realizes that if Agent Eight and herself does not retreat now, then they would be cutoff and capture along with Four. Agent Three made a difficult choice and follow the request of Four and abandon him. When Agent Three and Eight ran out of sight, Four gave a big smile to himself while the leader tried to interrogate him on the spot with a fake smile on her face.

???: Now that your "friends" left you for dead, how about we start with something simple. What is your name?

Four: Ladies first.

The leader mood turns sour. When she was about to punch Four in the face, Four saw an opening opportunity and counterattack the leader. She staggers back a bit from the unexpected pain. Her squad was aiming to take a shot at Four with their octoshot.

???: STAY OUT OF THIS, HE'S MINE!!!

They all began to back down and form a circle around them to make sure Four did not run. As four was getting ready to fight, the leader threw a fake punch on her left side leaving an opportunity to punch Four in the throat. While Four gasping for air, the leader sweep four legs causing him to fall to the ground. In the moment of vulnerability, the leader stomp on four head. In a blink of an eye the fight ended, and the result ended with Four losing consciousness. The leader assume he was faking it and shot Four in the leg. She concluded that he was out cold and concluded the interrogation. She pulled out a hand radio and proceeded to talk to someone on the other side.

???: We have secured an agent, were bringing him in.

The leader set her radio back to the side of her belt and began shouting orders.

???: You two hurry up and carry him. We are going have a long day. Once we enter the base, I want the Fort Lock-down. Do you understand?

Everybody began to salute and without saying a word, they began to move like a hive mind. The two octarians carry Agent Four to Fort Stones where he be tested to not brake under pressure while Agent Three and Eight Tried to find a way to rescue him before its too late. There is another legend about Fort Stones. It is said that capture enemy's entering Fort Stone are never to be seen again. How will this legend tell?

(A/N)
