Snooping

Ever since Jessica's falling out with Sarah, she had been off track a bit. She tried numerous times to get ahold of her, but no answer. Jessica came to the conclusion that she was blocked. It hurt a lot. They were best friends. Jessica meant no harm, but she had to remember it was a tough time for Sarah. Yet, when she thinks that, she thinks about how much harder she probably made it. Jessica knew Sarah wouldn't approve of Evan seeing Aspen, but she welcomed him in anyways. She just wanted to make things better, but Sarah only pushed her away.

Jessica was in her office at the apartment working from home. She had to catch up on some things and didn't feel like going to the office and being distracted. Danny was at work, so it was just her.

As she tried to work she just couldn't get Sarah off her mind. She worried about how she was, if she was settling in at Minnesota Alright, how the baby was. All these questions swam through her mind. She finally decided to call her sister, hoping she'd have answers.

"Hello, Jane?" Jessica says

"Hey Jess, what's up?"

"Nothing really, just working... you?"

"Cleaning, the usual."

"I have a question..." Jessica cuts her off

She sighs "if it's about Sarah- I don't want to be involved."

"Jane? Not wanting to be involved, Wow." Jessica says sarcastically.

"You know what- Bye."

"Wait! Jane, I'm sorry."

Jane huffs "What's your question?"

"How is she?"

"She's Fine. She has an apartment, she's just fine."

Jessica sighs with relief "I was worried... has she said anything about me."

"Jessica-"

"Jane..."

"She doesn't want to talk to you. That's all she's said. Just give it Time, Alright?"

Jessica closes her eyes "Fine."

"Listen, I have to go, the baby is awake. I'll talk to you later."

Once the phone call was over Jessica slammed her phone onto the desk and clenched her fist. She was so angry with herself, she didn't know what to do.

November-

"Here's a toast, to my wonderful wife... who is so talented in many ways. Congrats on your new book, baby."

"Cheers!" Everyone exclaims as they clink their glasses.

Danny wraps his arms around Jessica and gives her a kiss.

Just today her new photography book was on the shelves. It was a big deal, she couldn't believe it. Some of Danny and Jessica's friends all got together to celebrate at a bar down the street from their apartment.

"Congrats, Jessica. I'm so proud." Her friend Erin says giving her a tight hug

"Thank you..." Jessica smiles

"The book, the images, just... amazing!" Her co worker heather says

Jessica was so overwhelmed with all the compliments. It made her so happy that so many people loved the book.

"Danny, he's featured in a few." Jessica giggles

"I look pretty amazing in those." He jokes

"Mhm..."

"Let me get you another drink, Jessica. It's on me!" Her friend josh says

"Oh goodness, thanks!" She smiles

They had been out all night celebrating and drinking. Come morning time both Jessica and Danny woke up with pounding headaches.

Jessica rolled over to Danny who was naked under the sheets. She was as well. She giggled and sat up taking a sip of water.

"Morning, sunshine." She says as Danny rolls over and groans.

"Uhhh, I'm soooo hung over."

Jessica cups his cheeks and gives him a kiss. "Come on, go make some coffee while I shower and we will conquer these hangovers together!" She says getting out of bed.

Danny sits up and rubs his eyes. "Okay, be quick."

"I'll try."

Jessica runs into the bathroom and Danny slowly gets out of bed.

He walks into the kitchen and prepares the coffee. As he waits he goes over to his phone that was charging next to Jessica's. Not realizing it he accidentally picks up Jessica's which was identical to his. When the screensaver pops up he sees a long paragraph from David. Danny decided to read a little bit of it.

Hey jess, Congrats again. I hope you had a great night celebrating. Listen, I found some of those chapters you gave me a while back to Left Behind. I know you don't want to publish it because of privacy, but I wanted to give them back. I re-read them and I understand now, why you don't want to publish. I'm sorry, again. Let me know when you want to get them.

"Left Behind?" Danny says to himself

Then, Jessica walks into the kitchen with a towel on. She clears her throat when she sees Danny looking through her phone.

"Someone call?" She asks

"Huh? No." He says putting it down.

Jessica smirks and takes the phone. Then, she sees that he read David's message.

"How sweet that he congratulated me." She says, reading the text, hoping Danny didn't question Left Behind.

"Jess, I didn't mean to snoop."

"Oh, you're fine. We are married, no secrets." She says

"Okay, then what is Left Behind?" He asks bluntly

Jessica swallowed then shook her head. She got so nervous, Danny didn't know about the book. She couldn't lie, she couldn't let him know what it was either.

"Just a little novel. Nothing special."

"How does privacy come into play?"

Jessica shrugs her shoulders

"I don't know, he's weird. You made coffee!" She smiles

Danny shakes it off. He didn't put much thought into it. He walks over to the coffee machine and pours her a cup.

"Let's tackle these hangovers." She exclaims

A few days later Jessica left the house to get some groceries. Danny stayed behind to watch the game. During halftime Danny started to think about Left Behind. It had been on his mind for some reason. He knew Jessica was shy about her work, but he was dying to know what the 'novel' was. Danny hadn't brought it up, but he decided to figure out what it was for himself.

He got up from the couch and went into Jessica's office.

Everything was organized neatly in cabinets and folders. He went through hoping to find a written version, but nothing.

Then, he noticed Jessica's laptop, unlocked. Danny really didn't want to go through but he did. Sooner than later he came across some files. It took a while for him to find a document labeled Chapter 5, Baby, Left Behind.

Danny's hands shook as he tapped on the document.

Then, he began to read.

She didn't know what to do. Her father, he had just died. She was at his own funeral. She knew that she was saying goodbye to him, but had no idea her body was saying goodbye to her innocent baby....

As Danny continued to read he started to put pieces together. He kept reading and reading until he realized that this wasn't just some novel, this was Jessica's life. It killed him reading it, because he knew everything in here was true. It was all so raw and seemed so real. What he was reading was the day Jessica lost their baby, the emotional roller coaster she went through, the loneliness, the pain, the heartache. Reading it was just as painful for him. He never knew exactly what happened the day she lost their son. Now, he did. He didn't know how to react.
