New York Isn't Home
"George, why can't you do all your laundry at school? You bring all of these clothes home for me to clean!" Dorthy whines going through all of George's dirty clothes.
College was out for the year and George as home for the summer.
He shrugs her shoulders "Well, I thought you loved me?" He says
"Do your own laundry!" She says throwing him the pile of clothes
He chuckles and hugs his mother. "You know you missed me." He says
"I did, now go!" She says pointing to the laundry room.
"Wait, Mom, how do I work this thing?" He says
Dorthy rolls her eyes and goes to the laundry room. "You know what, I'll do it." She giggles
"Thanks ma!"
*doorbell rings*
"Go answer that for me, love." She says
"Sure"
George walks through the living room and to the front door. He looks out the window and sees an unfamiliar SUV. He shrugs his shoulders and opens it.
"Holy shit, Mom! it's Jessica!" He says
Dorthy stops what she's doing. Jessica wasn't suppose to come into town for another two weeks.
"Hey" She says
"Hey! I've missed you. You look great." He says hugging his sister.
Dorthy runs into the living room and looks at Jessica. She looked so drained, emotionally and physically.
"Honey?"
"Hey, Mom" She says
Dorthy runs up and gives her a hug. "What are you doing here so early? I'm thrilled to see you, don't get me wrong-"
"I quit my job" She says suddenly
George and Dorthy go wide eyed. They look at each other then back at Jessica.
"You quit your job?"
"Can I come in?" She says
"Yes, Of course. Come in and sit. You look tired. Let's talk in the living room."

Dorthy let's Jessica sit down and she makes her some tea. George and Jessica caught up a bit but waited to bring up the job situation until Dorthy got back.
"Jessica, why would you quit your job? You love that job!" Dorthy says sitting down next to her on the couch.
"No, I don't love it. I can't work there anymore. I can't be in New York, Mom."
Dorthy nods her head and breathes. This was a lot for her to take in. Jessica had a very well paying job and she threw it away. She didn't understand. Her first thought that Jessica did this all out of anger and would regret it.
She takes her daughter's hand and closes her eyes. "Jessie, this job was important to you. What made you all of a sudden want to quit and leave?"
"I've been wanting to leave for a while. I've been doing lots of thinking. When I have this baby, I don't want to bring her up in New York. I was cleaning my apartment one day and it really hit me, where would I put the nursery? New York isn't a place for a child to grow up. And then my job, I'm miserable everyday I go. There are people that I just can't stand. So, two days ago I told corporate I was leaving. I went home, packed up everything, put it in my car, and drove here."
Dorthy widened her eyes "You drove here? Jessica are you crazy!" Dorthy raises her voice
"Damn, Jessica this is a lot." George says
Jessica rubs her back and sighs "It's over now. I'm here. I'm going to talk to the realtor and see if I can get back into the lake house, but until then can I stay here?"
Dorthy sees that Jessica was in discomfort so she rubs her back and nods. "Of course. I just wish you would have told us. George and I would have come out and help you move. What's going on with your apartment?"
"I left a lot. Desks, tables, stands, beds, dressers, and some plates. I told my landlord to sell it all with the apartment. I rented it so I don't have to worry about it."
Dorthy was angry that she didn't know any of this was going on. She was upset with herself for leaving Jessica as well. Obviously Jessica wasn't ready to be on her own. Jessica was a determined girl. When she put her mind to something she did it. This was just a lot for her to do alone, while pregnant.
"So that SUV of yours is packed with all your stuff?" George says
She nods then yawns "Yeah... I'll unpack it all later. Is it okay if I lay down for a bit? I'm very tired." She says letting her body fall onto the couch.
Dorthy stands up and gets a blanket to put over her. "Of course... you just rest. Damn Jessica, I don't know why you do this to yourself." She says
"I had to." She mumbles as she falls asleep
Dorthy rolls her eyes and looks at George who was just as stunned.
"George, why don't you help me take all those boxes into the garage?" Dorthy whispers
George gets up and they go outside to help her unload everything.
"Why is Jessica so crazy?" George says carrying boxes of plates into the garage.
"She's not crazy. She's just stubborn. She can never decide what she wants. But I'm glad she came here. We've been waiting for this."
"What do you mean, 'we've been waiting for this?"
"Your sisters and I knew she'd come back here. She's all alone in New York. New York isn't home."
George shrugs his shoulders. "It's weird seeing her pregnant. There is literally a baby inside her, mom!"
"Yes George, I know."
"Wow"

A few days later-
"So how are you settling in? Is it nice living at home again?" Sarah says
Jessica bounces Aspen on her leg and nods. "Yeah. I have to wait until June to move back into the lake house. I can't kick these people out, they've already payed." Jessica sighs
"You'll have time to decorate the nursery and all that fun stuff. Right?"
She nods "I wouldn't know where to start. I don't even know what a baby really needs. Of course the basics, but there is so much." Jessica says with discouragement
"Don't worry Jess, we will help. Whatever you need!"
"Do you think I'm crazy?"
"For what?"
"Quitting NY mag and just moving over night?"
"Maybe, a bit. You need to be careful, you're pregnant, remember?"
She sighs "I just had to leave. And Sam! God, I hate him."
Jessica already told Sarah the whole story about Sam. She's the only one who knew him.
"Don't work yourself up. It's done and over with. The question is what now? What are you going to do for a job?"
Jessica shrugs her shoulders and sighs. "I'm still getting income from my books and David's company. For now, I guess I'll be jobless. Maybe I can come up with a new book? I don't know."
Jessica never really asked herself what would happen after she left New York. She'd never have another job like the one she had. Especially in Minnesota. It scared her thinking about it. She had a baby on the way and didn't have a job anymore.
Jessica rubs her temples "I'm crazy, Sarah. What am I going to do?" She cries
"It will be fine. You'll figure something out."
Then, Jessica gasps
"Oh my god, what?" Sarah says
"My doctor! I don't have a OBGYN anymore! She was such a great doctor.... I had an appointment today, too. I totally forgot." She puts her hand on her stomach and looks back up at Sarah with a concerned look.
"We can find you a doctor too. Just relax." She says
Jessica nods
"See, this is why you need to plan things like this out." Sarah says with a chuckle
