Church and State

Sarah's POV-

Jessica's sisters had come over to Sarah's new apartment for lunch. The three of them were always together. Jessica, Ann and Jane were like sisters to Sarah. They loved having Sarah near by.

"We have to figure out how to throw Jessica a baby shower. Before you know it she won't be able to travel. I don't think I can afford another trip to New York." Ann says

Jane nods in agreement "It would be hard to throw a party out there. Especially since all of her family and Danny's is here."

"Do you think she wants a shower?" Sarah says

"No, I don't think she does." Ann says with no hesitation

"Should we do this?" Jane asks

"If she doesn't want one, we don't want her to be uncomfortable."

"I think we should." Ann says

Sarah and Ann shrug their shoulders

"So how is this going to work?" Sarah asks

"Kali is having a birthday party at the end of the month. I'll ask Jessica to try to come. If she comes, we throw it a few days after the party."

"I'm so excited! This will be a lot of fun. Pink will be everywhere. We need to make this extra special for Jessica. No doubt about it." Jane says

"It's Crazy... Jessica is having a baby." Ann says to herself

They both nod "I wish Danny was here for her, it breaks my heart."

Jessica's POV-

May-

Jessica was in her office working when she got a call from Ann.

"Hello?"

"Hey Jess, it's me, Ann."

"Yes, I know. What's up?" She says with a giggle

"Well, I'm writing invitations for Kali's birthday party. Should I send you one?" Ann says

"Of course! When is it?"

"The end of the month, May twenty-third."

"I'll look into tickets!" Jessica says enthusiastically

"Great! Oh, I can't wait. She'll be so excited that aunt Jessie is coming."

"I can't wait. I guess I'll see everyone then."

"Yeah!"

May 6th-

Jessica woke up one morning not wanting to do anything. This is how it had been the last eight years ever since her father died on this exact day. Even though it was a sad day, it was also the day that Jessica and Danny decided to get married.

It was hard to go through days like this thinking about how much had changed. It was heart aching. She tried to make the best out of the day, even though it seemed impossible. She was tired of having bad days. That's all her life had consisted of the last few months.

Jessica decided that staying home and not going to work wouldn't be good for her. She needed to get out and keep her mind off things.

Immediately when Jessica got to work Sam was the first to greet her. She sensed her day was already not going to be good.

"Jessica, can I talk to you about this article?" He says chasing after her into her office

"What about the article, Sam?" She says forcefully

She throws her things onto her desk and turns to him.

He stands there and shakes his heads. "Would it kill you to just be the least bit decent? Ever since I've been here you make me feel like shit. You're being a jerk."

Jessica starts to laugh "I don't have time for this, Sam. Ask your question or leave."

"Fine, here's my question. Why can't you drop the past and just move on? I know I've fucked up a lot but that's because I love you... I let me emotions take over."

Jessica pounds on her desk. "Don't say you love me."

He clears his throat.

"I'm rotten to you because I don't want you here. I never asked for you to be hired."

"I get you've been through a lot, but don't take it out on me. I'm trying to be the good guy but it's really hard."

"Leave, get out." She snaps, pointing to the door.

He shakes his head and leaves. He slams the door behind him.

Jessica didn't know why, but she just didn't want anything to do with Sam. Sam only meant well. In the workplace Jessica had been treating Sam unfairly. Everyone was noticing it. Jessica didn't realize the extent of her rudeness, not knowing it could get her in trouble.

Sam had been so angry that he left for the day. That took lots of weight off Jessica's shoulders. The day went on, and it was terrible to say the least. She was tired, uncomfortable, and moody. Everyone at the office was being short with her. They all came to love sam and knew Jessica didn't like him. They all sided against her.

Grace walks into Jessica's office nervously at the end of the day.

"Jessica, it's corporate." She's says

Jessica sat there, a bit shocked that they'd call. Corporate was the head of the magazine company. She only ran her department so she had her own boss. When they called, it was never good.

"What line?" She asks picking up the phone

"Six"

Jessica takes a deep breath and answers

"Jessica Lange"

"Jessica, it's me, Derek. I'm going to need you to leave for the day and come up to our office. We need to speak with you regarding some things." He says

"Alright, should I leave now?" She asks

"Yes, please."

"Okay, thank you." She says hanging up

Jessica got this bad feeling in her stomach. She was scared to leave. Luckily, Derek's office was only a few flights up so she didn't have to drive around the city to get to him.

She grabbed her purse and left her office.

"Heather, I'll be back. Keep an eye on things?" She asks

"K" She responds in a snarky tone

Jessica shakes it off and gets onto the elevator to leave.

When she gets onto Derek's floor she felt like she was going to get sick. She always felt this way when she visited him. He was such a higher power, he scared her.

"I have a meeting with Derek, Jessica Lange is my name." She says

"He's waiting for you in his office, go right ahead in." The secretary says

Jessica fixes herself then slowly walks into the office. As she walks past a few doors, she sees Sam sitting outside his office. She didn't make eye contact with him once she saw Sam. She walked past and ignored him. She knew what this was about.

"Jessica, hello. Please sit." He says

Jessica smiles and sits down. He looks her up and down.

"I didn't expect you to be this far along." He says

She nods "I have a few more months to go."

"Anyways, I've been getting some complaints." He says, cutting to the chase.

"Complaints? About what?" She says widening her eyes

"You, Jessica. Your staff, Sam Shepard being one, has come to me today complaining of harassment, unfair behavior from you, and the list goes on. He's had a few witnesses back him up. Listen Jessica, I get that-"

"That fucker" She interrupts

Derek widens his eyes, he didn't need anymore more prof of Jessica and her behavior towards Sam.

"Jessica-"

"No, I'm not going to listen to this."

"You need to leave your life at home. Keep your problems with Sam out of the work place and just act more professional, Jessica. I know you, and this isn't you. You are great at what you do and I'd hate to see you lose it over something like this."

Jessica was silent for a few moments. She was so angry and hurt. She realized now that how she had been treating Sam was wrong, but she had a right not to like him. Jessica felt like sam just took this job to spite her.

"I'm sorry about what has happened these last few months, I get that it's been hard."

"You don't get it. But we aren't here to talk about this, are we? My personal life? Church and state, right?" She snaps. Jessica did not want to talk about Danny. She as tired of the 'Sorry' and 'I get it'. She had had enough.

"You know what, Derek. If I did lose my job, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I hate it, I really do. I liked the position I had a year ago but now, I hate it all."

Derek was shocked to hear Jessica say these things. He knew it was the anger talking, but no matter what Jessica would never say things like this.

"Excuse me?" He says raising his eye brows.

"I'm sorry, Derek, but I am resigning. I can't do this anymore. I can't be here. I need to leave." She says standing up

"Wait, Jessica, don't do this. You'll regret it. You will never have a job like this one, ever again. Just think, please. How will you support your child, huh?" He says

She goes to the door and turns to him. She takes a deep breath, thinks things over one last time, then shakes her head.

"I am done."
