Chapter 21
"Why are you here, Farah?"
Is'haaq looked at her. Examined her more like.
She looked happy. She laughed as Storm chewed on her hair and hummed as she played with him but she wasn't really happy. When she didn't realise he was looking, her eyes would stare unblinking into somewhere only she knew. And as soon as she felt his eyes on her, she smiled brightly at him as if she hadn't been sad only a second ago.
"What do you mean? I just made you cum in the most extraordinary way so I don't understand your confusion."
"I made you cum twice before that." Is'haaq remarked candidly.
"Good point." She brushed him away and went back to playing with Storm.
"You just came back from your honeymoon. You really shouldn't be here." He wouldn't drop it. he couldn't.
She ignored him, happily scratching Storm behind his ears. He knelt down before her, easing Storm off her lap. "Please talk to me. I know you and I know something's up."
"Maybe he's just crap at sex and that's why I come here."
Is'haaq puffed. "That's not it. You would never have been with him as long as you were if he was bad at sex." He pulled her off the couch and onto his lap, settling onto the floor. "Please just talk to me. You've been brushing this away for 7 months now. I know there's more to it."
Farah shrugged, nestling herself into his chest.
"Does he hurt you?"
She shook her head.
"Does he not love you?"
She shook her head once more.
"Do you love him?"
She reeled back, glaring at him. "Of course I love him!"
"Then what?"
She looked down at her toes, wriggling them and curling them as she tried to think of the words.
"It's me, Farah. I'll never judge you." He reassured her.
"I've had two miscarriages with him already." She continued to look down, unable to look him in the eye. He could do nothing more wrap her up in his arms and try to squeeze her pain away.
"Why doesn't my body work, Is'haaq? I just want a baby and it won't give me one." Her words were muffled into his shoulder as tears leaked down her face and onto his t-shirt.
"I'm sorry, Farah." What else could he say? Nothing would ever make her feel better. "Is that why you keep coming back? Does he blame you?"
"He doesn't even know about the second one." She looked up at him- pitiful and alone.
"When did it happen?" he wiped her tears away, before bringing her close to him once more.
"A few days before I came to see you for the first time. I just wanted to feel..."
He waited for her to think of the words.
"If I had to fail him, I wanted to control it. It was better than..."
"You're not a failure, Farah. Don't ever think that you're a failure. Your babies just weren't ready for the world. It wasn't you because I know that you would have loved those babies more than anything in this world. You would have died for them if you had to and that not a failure."
She wiped her eyes before turning to look at him. "I would have died for our baby too."
He kissed the crown of her head before burying his face in her hair. "I know."
They mourned together one last time for a baby that had barely even been but had taken root in their hearts none the less.
