First Day

Kali didn't like to get up in the morning just like any other student. At least it was summer, so the sun that shone through her window woke her up. Kali silently unlocked her phone to see the time.

6:49 am.

In eleven minutes her alarm would go off so she turned around and closed her eyes again. She liked these moments. Kali may be tired but she couldn't sleep so she enjoyed laying there and closing her eyes. After a few minutes she heard her mother leaving the house, the engine of the car and she was gone.

Two more minutes left.

...

"If you love somebody

Better tell them while they're here 'cause

They just may run away from you..."

"Okay."

"You'll never know quite when, well

Then again it just depends on

How long of time is left for you"

"OKAY," Kali exclaimed annoyed though she didn't turn off the song. Instead she connected her phone to the speakers and turned up the volume. Then she sighed.

"I can do that, let's go." She took a shower, brushed her hair and ate breakfast while listening to music. It helped her looking forward to the day. As it was half past seven Kali dressed in shorts and a blue top. With her school bag she left the door exactly as Maya pulled up in front of her house. The blue colour reflected the sun so much that it blended Kali.

"Good morning!" She greeted her best friend and got into the car.

"Arrrr you readey??" Maya imitated a moderator before a concert starts and Kali cheered.

"It is so warm, I shouldn't have chosen my running shoes. I am already sweating," she said groaning after she stopped. Maya looked at her sympathetic.

She told Kali, "My mum wouldn't let me wear anything else then sandals. She got a feeling for temperature."

"My mum is already gone when I get up," Kali explained. "And my dad gets up at eight so I am alone in the morning."

"Isn't that pretty relaxed?"

"It is," Kali agreed. "I wouldn't say I am not a morning person but if I would have to talk to people, that is a whole different story."

They arrived at their school, Cartney High School. A light yellow building with around 1000 students of every class. The red roof reflected the sun and almost all windows were closed.

"The ninth-graders come in a week, right?" Kali asked whereat Maya nodded.

She shrugged, "I heard though that some people were coming to us to finish their school here, I don't know if it's true or not." She pulled in a parking lot and the two friends got out.

"My first lesson is English so I gotta go, see you in the break," Maya said and rushed upstairs since English classrooms were on the 5th floor. Kali took her sweet time, Biology would be on the 1st floor so she didn't have to rush. She sat down in the last row and prepared her side of the two men desk.

Two minutes before the class started, the classroom was almost full now, a girl came up to Kali. Her name was Emma and she was in the same Arts class as Kali last year.

"Hi Kali," she greeted and Kali smiled.

"Hi Emma, AP Biology, too?"

"Yeah," she pointed on the seat next to her. "Will Maya come or may I sit next to you?" Kali shook her head and pulled the chair back.

"No, she's in a different class. Go ahead." With a thankfull expression Emma sat down.

"I was scared about my classmates this year, at least one course will be nice," she admitted whispering as the teacher came in. Kali smiled at Emma.

"I had the teacher already last year, she is very friendly and fair," she told her seat mate who looked relieved. It was true, Kali was already in AP Biology last year with the same teacher, Mrs Johnson. She came in with two boys and as Kali saw the first one she took a sharp breath that made Emma look at her curiously. She immediately looked down on the file in front of her. Kali was breathing fast.

That was unexpected. What is he doing here? Oh, I'm so stupid. Of course he is here to finish his school, to graduate on the same school as me. That will be kinda awkward, did he forgive me for what I've done?

She slowly looked up to see his face. Memories came rushing back to her but she dismissed them, didn't want to think of them. The boy had short light brown hair and was tall, at least 6'2 maybe even 6'3. He looked around the class with his green eyes and as he saw Kali he stopped for a moment. And then he smiled.

He looks the same as the last time I've seen him.

Kali sat there with her mouth a bit open and took in the view she had from her old childhood friend but slowly she looked into his eyes. The honesty and obvious happiness from seeing her made it impossible to not smile back so her lips curled up and she smiled shyly back at him. Her heart stopped for a moment but she didn't even notice it, she was so mesmerized by his appearance.

"Okay, class, I think you already know how things will be," Mrs Johnson started the lesson. "I will be your tutor this year since all of you got different schedules, depends on which courses you chose. It's the same as last year. My name is Mrs Johnson and I am your AP Biology teacher. I hope, I will see some of you in my other classes, too." She smiled and Kali was one of the students that smiled back.

"I am sure you already noticed our two additions to our class, say hi to them," she continued and pointed towards the boys. "You may introduce yourself."

He stepped forward a bit and waved at the class, the smile still on his face and he often looked at Kali. "Hi guys, my name is Aiden. I come from Abarota High School but we moved in this city so I will finish the school here." He stepped back to make room for the other boy. Kali noticed his airiness as he casually put his hands in his dark pants and she only looked at the other boy as he started to talk. All the time his black hair was covering the blue eyes but now that he looked up Kali noticed the intense colour of them.

"Hey, I'm Damien," his voice was as dark as the whole appearance. He seemed to be the opposite of Aiden who was accessible.

"Thank you, guys. Now, sit down so I can start telling you the topics of this year." Mrs Johnson already started to write on the black board. Aiden chose the seat in front of Kali and used the first chance to turn around.

Here goes my chance to see the front.

"Hi," he whispered smiling. Kali first only saw the sparkling dark green and almost forgot to answer but she caught herself.

"Hi," she said softly and motioned for him to turn around so she can focus on the class. He silently laughed and did as she told. People, including Emma, were curiously eyeing the exchange between those two but nobody asked her about it.

"We will have a big project this year," Mrs Johnson explained. "Since you will be busy with homeworks and learning for the exams I thought I help you out. The project will be one third of your grade but you have time until the end of this semester-"

He seems to be over it but what do I do if he asks me about it? What am I gonna answer? And I still have to apologize, right? This will be so uncomfortable and awkward, I don't want to. Go away Aiden, you're making my life complicated!

"-this way I will barely give you homework. You can also divide your time the way you want to. When you have upcoming tests, focus on the tests. If you don't, work on the project."

But she still felt very comfortable around him. The way he smiled made her relax immediately and Kali couldn't help but smile at the thought of him. They have been friends for a reason after all and she really liked him.

"It doesn't matter to me if you are two or three people but if you want to do it alone come to me. Just give me an end result. I will send an email with the topics and you choose one. In two weeks I want everyone to pick partners and a topic!"

After the lesson ended Kali wanted to go to Maya quickly but Aiden caught up to her.

"I didn't know you were on this school," he said and Kali smiled.

"I am here since 9th grade," she answered. "But why are you here? You moved away so what happened?"

"My parents wanted to go back to the roots so here I am, having to change the school for my last year but I think it will be worth it," he explained smiling. His easygoing attitude towards everything and warm undertone made Kali very comfortable talking to him. She didn't know but she missed that a lot. She missed him a lot.

"So, about the project. What do you think of this idea?" He asked.

Kali stopped walking for a moment to look at him before she went on.

"What project?"

Aiden looked at her surprised. "The one Mrs Johnson was talking about. One third of our grade? Remember?"

"Ah, right, sorry." Kali put a strand of her hair behind her ear to cover up her embarrassment.

She was just mentioning it, I am so stupid. What else would he talk about?

They arrived at the door where Maya waited. Her eyes widened as she saw the two childhood friends.

"Kali!" She exclaimed teasing. "You replaced me very quickly and with a guy, I can't believe it! You couldn't wait, huh" Kali laughed and hugged her.

"He is my childhood friend Aiden, we were on the same elementary school until 6th grade," she introduced him.

"Nice to meet you," Maya greeted him friendly. He smiled back and Maya turned to Kali with sparkling green eyes that were much brighter than Aiden's dark ones. Kali sent her a warning glance and barely shook her head, don't.

"What classes do you guys have next?" She asked to change the topic before Maya could do something stupid. She trusted her more than herself but Kali knew that Maya sometimes knew better what was the best for her and would push her even though Kali didn't want to. This wasn't always comfortable.

Once Kali didn't feel well in class and Maya set up a trap so that the teacher would think Kali would throw paper balls at him. He sent her to the principal and she got suspended for a day that she rested at home. Her sickness could have become easily serious, as the doctor explained to her the day off, so it was good she could rest. It still wasn't comfortable for Kali.

"Psychology 3," Aiden replied.

"AP Biology 2," was Maya's answer. Kali looked at her own schedule disappointed.

"AP Psychology 2. So we are separated again," She glanced at Aiden for a second before she met Maya's eyes. They looked as disappointed as she felt.

Maya joked, "The teachers probably didn't like us chatting the whole class." Aiden laughed and she looked at him. "You shouldn't underestimate us, we were talking all the time but we thought they never noticed, maybe they did notice after all." She sighed. "I have to go to the second floor, you guys too?" Kali nodded while Aiden shook his head.

"I don't know, my schedule says room 403."

"It's on the fourth floor," Kali explained to him.

"Thanks," he said and left to find his classroom. Kali turned to Maya.

"Is he the one you were telling me about?" She asked and Kali nodded. Then she sighed.

"What should I do?" Maya never saw Kali this helpless about other people.

"He seems like a nice guy," Maya tried to reassure her. "I am sure he already forgave you, look at how he happy he is. Would he be this friendly to you if he would still think about it?"

Kali looked in the direction Aiden went off earlier.

"I guess not."
