Chapter Three: "A woman of principles"

"Theo...James...Theo...James..." The main desk attendant muttered as she went through the list of new kids in her hand. "Sorry. No Theo James."

"That has to be a mistake," Theo argued. "Could you check once again?"

She didn't seem too pleased but went ahead and looked at the paper again.

"Theo James?" A voice called out from behind him.

"Yes?" He turned around. In front of him stood a woman, whose posture itself told him that she wasn't a force to be reckoned with.

"I'm Mrs Smith, the Dean of the school. The list that Patricia is looking at is of the new kids in the year below yours. You're the only new in one in your grade. Please come in." She turned around and entered the room behind her. Theo followed and shut the door behind him as the Dean sat down on her chair. "Your father called me earlier this morning. He wanted me to keep an eye on you to make sure you're fine. He did ask me not to tell you...but...you look like a smart kid, so if there is anything you need help with, you know where to find me."

Theo nodded. His father was never really part of his life, but he had hoped for his sister's sake and his own, that maybe after his mom's death, his so-called father would look into their lives. Turns out that work is work and not even kids with your own blood could change that.

"Now, about your sc-." The Dean began as a bald man barged into the room.

"I want Grace out of my class!" He exclaimed, his hands shaking in anger.

"Mr Norbert, I'm with a student." She replied, her eyes calm as she gestured Mr Norbert to take the seat beside Theo. Norbert sat down and began tapping his feet impatiently.

"I don't mind waiting," Theo muttered. Norbert looked like he was going to strangle one of them; Theo doubted it would be the person who had his job in her hands.

"It's fine." Mrs Smith replied as she clicked enter on her computer. The printer beside her immediately printed out a sheet. "This is your schedule and behind that is the map of the school. If you have any problems, you can ask Patricia."

Theo nodded as he got up to leave. He didn't reach the door before Norbert began his complaints.

"She filled my shoes with permanent glue! PERMANENT GLUE!" The man yelled.

Theo smiled wondering what this man did that made a student want to do this. He walked out of the office into the corridor. He walked to his locker and threw his bag into it, taking only his laptop.

"She's in so much trouble." A group of guys snickered as they walked past him.

"Yeah, right. The Dean loves her. She ain't going to do shit."

Theo slammed the locker shut and turned to walk in the other direction.

"Hey!" A voice yelled from behind him. Theo turned to look in reflex. A scrawny kid with glasses was standing near his locker. He nodded towards Theo. "You."

"What's up," Theo asked as he walked back to his locker.

"You should really lock. People are crazy around here." He muttered, removing his bag from his back. He had a lock for each zip of his bag. "I have an extra here."

He removed a lock and placed it in Theo's hand. "Lock up. The password is 7890."

Theo contemplated his reply as he locked his locker. "Thanks, I guess. I'll get you the lock back tomorrow."

"I'm Ahjay Subramaniam." He introduced holding his hand out.

"Theo," Theo replied, avoiding his last name on purpose, as he shook Ahjay's hand.

"Well, Theo, what period do you have first?" Ahjay asked peeking at his schedule. "Ahh. Math. This should be fun."

"Math isn't really fun for me," Theo admitted as he followed him to the class.

"This class will be," Ahjay replied turning around and walking backwards. "There is this girl called Lara in this class. Let's just say that she is a woman of principles and the teachers don't usually follow them. Trust me it's going to be fun."

Trust Ahjay. It is going to fun.
