Two in one (Chapter 13)
My head hurt. I wasn't in my bed this one was far fluffier. It was uncomfortable. I'd rather be on the floor. A thin green blanket was on me. The fact that it was green made my spine jump. I quickly grabbed my hair. The cheap dye was still in it. I got out of the bed. I looked down at my body. The hoodie was gone but my long sleeve shirt was still there. I must have been wearing it for a while. I smelled horrible. If someone across town took a deep breath in they would faint. Sadly this isn't the worst I've smelled.
I could hear people from the other room. They were arguing about who could drink the darkest coffee. There were two people. The TV was on. No three. Someone was watching the TV. Eraserhead, Mic, and Hitoshi.
Ah, crap the fact that I'm here means they know I've been living on my own.
Should I pay it cool or disappear?
There was a mirror in the room so I slowly moved over to it. I looked like a ragged doll. My black/brown hair dissolved. My normal paleness was intense. I leaned in and looked at my eyes. They were bloodshot. My contacts looked like they were losing their abilities to hide my dual-colored eyes'. Green and Blue shining through. It must have been a couple of days sleeping in these things. This was bad. If I blinked and they fell out they would know. I needed to leave.
I wasn't completely dying on the inside I could do it. I don't live that far from here. I slid open the window. Footsteps were coming towards the door. I had a moment of panic. I could easily hide but I just stood there. I felt guilty leaving. The door slammed open exposing me standing one leg out the window.
My body was shaking so hard it was raddling the window.
Eraserhead looked like he wanted to say something but all that came out was a simple hey.
"Hey..." I stood there probably looking like a guilty ghost.
"You look bad," Hitoshi said
I didn't respond to him.
"You were pretty sick but this doesn't explain why your eyes are red." Aizawa stepped closer body tense.
I leaned out the window more. "It alerted you when the window opened, didn't it?"
"Kid, how about you come back inside and we can talk." Eraserhead stepped forward.
"No thanks. I'm not dumb. The fact that I'm here means the system found me. I don't want to go back into the system." All three of them didn't know what to say. "I've seen you eyeing me the past two weeks. You are awful at hiding it."
"We aren't here to put you in the system."
"Ren listen to dad."
My head whipped to look at Hitoshi. My eyes went wide. I looked straight into Eraserhead eye's, "I knew you were a sucker for strays" I looked over at Mic and Hitoshi. "But not this much."
"That not why..."
"You probably already adopted me. I'm not running away. I just need some time. Okay?" I was sitting backwards on the window.
"Dude you can't fly! This is the top floor!"
He was trying to get me to respond to him.
I leaned back.
"KID!"
I tucked my wings diving down. Halfway down I spread them open slowing my fall. I still crashed. No broken bones but it was jarring.
I could hear Eraser jumping out the window using his capture tape.
"Get back here!"
"NOPE!"
A murderous cough escaped me. It took me far longer to recover than I liked.
"I can hear you wheezing from here! Problem child!" Eraserhead was fuming.
I took a sharp left heading in the opposite direction of the beach. I seized my moment when I saw a trashcan tipped on its side. I slide into it. I was wheezing and it was loud.
Clam down.
I need to calm down.
I took a deep breath in.
"Kid! Come out!" Eraserhead ran past me. I didn't waste any time and backtracked. I lost Eraser.
Ha! They can't catch me. No one can.
I let out a high-pitched whistle. I was able to call five birds.
"Guy's I need help," I explained my situation.
The birds set up a system. A bird in every direction with one leading the way. The bird leading me screeched to turn left but then he turned right. That was a close call. Not every bird is as smart as each other. Let me tell you now seagulls WILL and they DO lie to you.
I ran into the abandoned Hotel, jumping through a window. I scaled to my room at the top. The birds flew in following me.
"Thanks guys!" They stayed for a while and told me they wanted to keep watch.
I loved my Hotel. It was huge and I could make new gadgets here. The best part was no one could keep me here. It was open. I slumped down onto my bet-up bed. This bed is way better than that thing I just sunk into.
One thing that I had a limitless number of are pillows. I spent an entire paycheck on pillows once. I have no regrets. I have a big long one and one that looks like a shark.
My favorite one was is called a pillow pet. I felt so guilty when I bought it, but the advertisement was stuck in my head for weeks. I got the biggest one. It was a big fat cat. There wasn't a spot in my room that didn't have a pillow on it.
There was a bathroom in this room but the water didn't work. One bathroom worked but it was a couple of floors down.
I took out my contacts and headed to the room. I took a shower getting all dye out of my hair. Of course, it was a cold shower. The heating to this place was long gone.
I wanted to go on patrol tonight. I've gone every night until I started going to UA. Crime rates were going up and the news people were starting to talk.
"HA! They totally adopted me. The worst possible outcome. Nothing worse could have happened." I was ranting to myself. "Noooooooo? Really? You've been trying to be an average student! Look at that it worked so well that the teacher adopted you because it makes you more pathetic."
I've grown too soft. There are so many ties to lead me back to the Vigilante. One, countless injuries I get. Two, my jobs.
"Oh look at that, whoever REn SuZuki is he just missed two days of work and came back with a limp! Nothing to worry about here."
If they haven't fired me already they will now. They are thinking they got the hard-working Ren Suzuki. Not this broken thing.
"I'm a bird who can't even fly." This time I whispered it seeing the tears form down my face.
No one would want this broken-down body. All but two. Two people. Master, and LOV. LOV wanted my skills. Master wants his slaves.
A bird next to me started singing. It was baiting me to sing along. I gave in and started humming.
~~
My cold was gone within a couple of days. Within those two days, I did as much vigilante work as I could. A couple of scrapes here and there. A dark bruise on my torso, but that was about it. I had to crack down on the crime rate.
I didn't want them to but the animals started helping me. More and more of them are asking for instructions. It's getting hard to control. I don't want them to come but they do.
"Help!"
I rushed down kicking a thug.
Two hours later I did the same thing.
How in the world can I go back? I ran away. Like I always do. It's a simple thing I've learned to do, hit and run. Hit, run. Easy as that.
I was laying on a roof looking up into the stars. It was peaceful. No crimes have happened. The news of the Phantom started going around again.
"You're not being very sneaky." I huffed out.
"We're not trying to be," Eraser walked up to me, Hawks next to him.
"Are you going to try to get me today?" I wasn't in the mood. "Let's call a trues tonight, ok?."
Both of them stood there not knowing what to do. They were very close. The closest they have ever been.
"You're talkative today." Hawks cautiously laid next to me.
I had my mask on so I wasn't worried about my face.
Eraserhead pulled out his sleeping bag doing the same as hawks, putting me in the middle. There wasn't a muscle in my body that wasn't tense. One movement and I'm gone.
"I can see a cat." Eraserhead pointed.
I jumped up onto my feet. Then slowly sat back down.
"Hey look at that it's a KFC bucket." Hawks pointed. Eraserhead said it looked more like an umbrella.
I couldn't see anything. I tried. I really tried.
"That one looks like a cup of coffee."
"Look another KCF bucket!"
"Those are the same stars bird head."
"Are not!" Hawks sat up looking at Eraser. I jumped backwards.
"What are you doing," I whispered at them.
"I'm looking at the sky on a peaceful night," Eraserhead said. His body was almost as tense as mine. "What can you see?"
I looked up at the stars no shapes formed. "What do you need?"
Both of them didn't respond.
"How would you earn someone's trust?" Eraserhead spoke.
I didn't respond.
"You don't use them for your own gain." Hawks voice was emotionless.
Eraser answered his question, "Time."
They were talking about me. "How do you trust someone?" I barely even spoke. I wanted them to hear it but desperately didn't. "If you're talking about Suzuki don't worry about it."
Eraser shot up, "WHERE IS MY SON!"
I jumped so hard I cleared half the roof. "He's fine. He wanted me to tell you he will come back soon."
"Whos Suzuki? You have another son? The other bird bain was lost.
"Yes, I do. He ran away three days ago. How does he know you?" He directed the question at me.
"I saved him a couple of years back. I took him in these past months." The shock on his face was laughable. The sweat on my palms dripped. "His trust issues are as bad as mine."
"Please take me to him."
"I can't do that."
"Why?" hawks added in.
"I don't want to move."
It was emotionally draining being the Phantom whenever I saw Eraser. He wanted to talk to me. Tell me that he would help me. It's kind of ironic that he just forcefully adopted the kid he's been chasing for three years. Now he's talking to that kid, thinking we are talking about his other kid. When in reality they are the same person.
"Don't worry about it, I'll kick him out tonight." I was walking on a tight rope. "I trust this kid with my life. He won't tell anyone anything. He's the only person in the world I trust. If you hurt him in any way we will both disappear." There was one thing about me. I was good at walking on a tight rope.
"You should come with him." At this point, we were all standing in our fighting stances.
"I'm beyond hope. He isn't."
I was about to go when hawks spoke up, "Why did you talk to us this time?"
"We all get lonely sometimes. Plus you guys are cool."
