"Roy."
His eyes slowly opened, the harsh light striking him through the uncurtained windows. He dreamt a dreamless sleep, still feeling unrested.
"Babe."
MacKenzie sat at the edge of the bed, already dressed. Her hair was long enough now for it to be pulled back. Her eyes looked saddened and tired. Not much sleep, Roy assumed.
She continued to stare at him.
"Did you know that you're fucking beautiful?" Roy exclaimed.
MacKenzie's eyebrows rose.
"Really? Am I really?" She thrusted a small piece of paper into Roy's face, and he sat up, dumbfounded. "Listen, I'm gonna be frank with you-"
"Kenz, what are you-" oh. It was that nurses phone number she slipped him getting into the car.
Roy found himself blushing, and MacKenzie noticed. Her eyes were beginning to well up with tears. She wasn't tired. She was crying.
"Kenzie, it was at the hospital. This chick gave me her number-"
"And you didn't throw it away? Like, you could have thrown it away. But you didn't."
"I'm sorry, MacKenzie. A lot was on my mind, considering. That was the least of my worries, throwing away a random chick's number."
"Yeah, but that means you talked to that random chick, right? Because someone wouldn't just go up to a stranger and give them their telephone number without talking."
"She was some nurse, Kenz."
"Some nurse. Nice. Like me, right? Some nurse."
"Babe. Babe." Roy ripped the paper up and put MacKenzie's hands in his.
"Why are you calling me babe all of a sudden?"
"I don't know...do you want me to stop?"
"I don't care."
"MacKenzie, you're overreacting. It's nothing, see? It's gone. I love you. And we're going to Langdon, remember?"
"I'm sorry," MacKenzie sniffed. "I got a phone call this morning about that whole thing. My aunt is definitely on her deathbed now."
"You're stressed. It's fine." Roy pulled her into him and held her against his chest. "Hey when we leavin', anyway?"
"As soon as we can. I can't believe we're really doing this."
"Which car are we taking?"
"I was thinking yours, so we can take turns driving?"
Roy could tell she was still trying to hold back tears.
"Hey," he whispered. "I love you."
"I'm sorry," she whimpered.
"Don't be. Lots of stuff is going on. It's understandable." He kissed her forehead tenderly.
There was a loud knock at the door and MacKenzie jumped.
"Dear god," she huffed.
"It's fine, I'll get it," Roy assured her, pulling himself out of bed. He threw on the closest shirt he could find. "You should take a nap or something." He closed the door behind him.
Roy slowly opened the front door, uncertain of who to expect knocking at ten in the morning. He was suddenly filled with resentment.
Nurse Beckie peered down at him and let out the most unhuman screech of pleasure and surprise.
"Roy Walker? Jesus Christ this day has barely started and I get to see the love of my life. Wait, where's MacKenzie? Did I go to the wrong house?"
"No, Beckie, you didn't get the wrong house. You've been here before," MacKenzie sighed from behind Roy.
Beckie enthusiastically let herself in, flinging herself onto the couch. She double took Roy again.
"You two are..."
MacKenzie raised an eyebrow.
"Oh you two are! MacKenzie our patient! Who would have known! And to think Rosalie was just talking about him all day after he left the hospital yesterday."
"Rosalie?"
"Intern. Looked at your boyfriend like he was a piece of meat. Sure loved getting her hands on him too!" She chuckled.
MacKenzie was clenching her teeth. She smiled. "Hands on him."
"I tell him who does this when you're at home? Like I'm sure you love putting your hands on Roy- you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm fond of Roy's progress. Now he has you. It's like, meant to be. Do you have coffee?"
"Mmm."
Roy found himself blushing again like an idiot. And felt like an idiot still wearing pajama pants and a button down shirt.
"I'm so upset," Beckie said.
"Because some chick had her hands on my boyfriend?" MacKenzie bitterly replied, pouring a cup of coffee with a shaking hand.
"What? What?" Beckie asked confusedly.
"Wow I love being talked about like I'm not in the room when I'm sitting right next to you," Roy mumbled, irritated.
"Oh you're fine, honey," Beckie crossed her legs.
"What?" MacKenzie scoffed.
"Fine," Roy smiled.
"I got laid off," Beckie frowned.
"Mmm," MacKenzie sat down next to her. "So you came here."
"I don't know what I possibly could have done wrong." Tears were coming. "I mean everything was just fine yesterday, and I came in for my morning shift and boom! Your services aren't needed anymore."
Beckie began crying. She unexpectedly grabbed Roy's arm in grief. He wanted to groan.
"I'm sorry to hear that," MacKenzie said.
"I don't know what to do. We're ladies, Kenz. We can't just work wherever we want. Who's gonna hire me?"
"Oh I know who'll hire you!" MacKenzie smiled. "I know a position that's hiring..."
"Huh?" Beckie sniffed.
"Yeah. This great family. Two great kids. Parents are out of town a lot. They just lost a caregiver. She's moving away I guess."
"I have NO experience with children. They won't. They won't."
"Come on. You've done rotations in the children's ward with me plenty of times."
"I mean you're right about that," Beckie agreed.
"It pays excellent," MacKenzie smiled. "Actually, do you want the number of the mother?"
"Do I!"
"Y'know she's right," Roy said.
"Oh my god Roy I forgot you were here," Beckie put her hands to her face.
"I'm sitting right next to you."
"Oh MacKenzie Lebow, I just knew you were my best friend. I knew I had to come to you today." She hugged her violently. MacKenzie made eye contact with Roy and he grinned.
"Let me go get that number for you," MacKenzie said.
"Take me there now take me there now."
"Calm down, we should call first. They're out of town a lot, like I said."
"It's the perfect job for you," Roy said quietly.
Beckie kissed Roy on the cheek.
"God it's like you two know me like the back of your hands!"
Yeah it was definitely time to go to Langdon.
