14. The Wall Enters
Jacob was just looking back at the events of that day with disbelief. Where was this place? He watched Leandro walk to jean and without saying anything terrorised the girl had dared take Jean's attention for longer than he saw fit. The girl paled and quickly took out a booklet with a pen out of her pocket and handed to Leandro who wrote something on it and handed it back to her. He gave her a sanction. The girl said bye to jean who was standing there watching shocked. As the girl sprinted away jean asked "Why did she leave?"
Leandro said "She must be busy. I gave her some cleaning up duty to do. She will be back once done." He then said "I wanted to talk to you more. There is not long left till I will have to go somewhere you won't go."
Jean asked "Where?"
Leandro said "The boys' arena."
Jean said "What happens there?"
Jacob cleated her throat "Jean. Come here. Sit in the shade."
Jean listened to her brother and went to sit next to him.
Leandro gave Jacob a smirk as he walked to sit on the right hand side to jean while her brother was on her left. "Ask Jacob what happens at the boys' arena."
Jean turned to Jacob "What happens at the boys arena?"
Jacob said "Flower pot. I don't think it matters. You go to do something else while I go to the boys arena next."
Jean turned to Leandro "What happens there?"
Leandro said "Well. This arena has a history."
Jacob said "Flower pot. It's like a sorority club."
Leandro said "No it's not. No where near. Come on Jacob."
Jean looked away "I want to get some more soda. Then tell me what it is.." She then stood up and walked away.
Jacob could see Leandro was pushing it. He gave him a forced smile and then said "Flower pot doesn't need to know. What is wrong with you? I told you she doesn't like fighting. She is curious. She always wants to know everything. Why did you have to tell her..."
Leandro said "You won't have to fight at the arena. I can exempt you. Every male student does take part in the try outs of the cage fighting. But I can cross out your name if it makes jean happy."
Jacob said "That's not the problem. Jean knows I can take anyone who challenges me..."
Leandro said "Well. That's debatable." He gave him a smile "You haven't beaten me.
Jacob said "Jean just doesn't like me fight. If someone challenges me then I won't say no. I don't mind fighting. But jean does."
Leandro said "Fighting is a usual occurrence here Jacob. She will see fighting around here. This is where we learn how to battle. We're fighters and risk takers. We thrive and survive here."
Jacob sighed and held his head in his hand as he looked down "You don't understand. She can handle watching fights ... But ..."
Leandro said "Problem solved then."
Jacob looked at Jacob "She doesn't like to see me fight."
Leandro said "I said. I can exempt you from fighting. I haven't put a gun to your head to fight. Have I?"
Jacob said "You did actually. When you first met me you all ganged up on me. That was before you knew I was related to jean but never mind... Right now, why do you insist on bringing up the cage fighting ... Look... I am telling you, I have to hide this from her.
Leandro spoke in an annoyed tone as though he was explaining a point for the tenth time "Like I said... I haven't asked you to fight in the arena and won't. You are exempt. Last time we boxed by the way, you were the one who initiated it. Not me."
Jacob said "You don't understand. It's not within my nature to say no to a fight in any contest. If I am challenged I will fight... But flower pot can't see me fight. I can't have that. Your school is the worst place I could end up in. This is a mess. I want a transfer."
Leandro said "Transfer will be denied instantly Jacob. This is a one way ticket ..."
Jacob said "To hell."
Leandro chuckled "Yes. To hell. You shouldn't buy a boarding pass if you can't handle the flight Jacob. You are in but you can't get out... Now. Listen here. I just met you and your sister but ... You said it yourself. She shoots guns. Any girl who can shoot a gun can handle watching you fight."
Jacob said "I never said she can't handle me fight. She doesn't like me fight."
Leandro said "Where is she now? How long does buying a can bottle of soda take?" He turned around. He saw Jean talking to Leo.
Jacob commented "What's the matter? He gets cleaning duty or push ups for talking to my sister?"
Leandro turned to Jacob "Neither. You get jail time for sarcasm."
Jacob said "What's jail time?"
Leandro said "You will see. Not now though. I will give it to you tomorrow morning. In football practice. I don't have time for this." He then turned to look at jean and Leo. He then put his hand at his lips and whistled. Leo immediately turned. He waved at his brother and then said something to jean. They both started walking to Leandro and Jacob.
Jacob said "So your brother gets nothing? No sanction?"
Leandro turned to him "No."
Jacob asked "Why not?"
Leandro stated "Because. He lives with me. That's a sanction within itself." He then gave him a cold stare "You talk too much and you are questioning me. Double jail time tomorrow."
Jacob remembered. He was warned not to ever comment on Leandro's family members. Leandro dealt with Leo privately and not publicly.
Jacob asked Leo as he got close "Aren't you meant to be on the field? You are running this session."
Leo shrugged "The session is technically over. The rest of them are not upto standard of recruitment onto the football team. Alfonso is just doing it all now."
Jacob asked "So if they are no good and you know they are not football material, why do you test them?"
Jean stood next to her brother and took a sip from her drink as she said "I asked that question. He said it's too entertaining too watch."
Leo said "I can't pass up. Can I?" He then turned to Leandro who was silently listening. "We have some good recruits. Now that this session is over, would you like to announce the next one or shall I?"
Leandro punched him in the arm "Take initiative. I put you in charge. Didn't I?"
Leo rubbed his arm "Alright." He then walked away.
Leandro asked "What did Leo talk to you about jean?"
Jean started looking around "Nothing."
Jacob said "Did he tell you stuff about Leandro." He then gave Leandro a victorious smile but seeing his serous face made him lose his smile quick.
Leandro said "Is that so?"
Jean shook her head "No. He was talking about Elena..."
Leandro gave her a look "Did he ask you to do something to bring Elena around?"
Jean sighed "It wasn't like that. He didn't ask me. He said he wished someone could help."
Leandro said "Someone as in you?"
Jean nodded "Yes."
Leandro said "Did you say yes? What does he want? I don't like anyone to ask you for favours..."
Jean said "I said yes. He wants me to teach him to play a song for her with a piano... I don't know where he wants to do it where they have piano. But that's what he wanted."
Leandro said "I will talk to him."
Jean said "I don't mind. Honest."
Leandro said "Alright. I will see you later jean. The next thing is at the boys' arena. See you around." He then patted Jacob on the back "You are coming. I will talk to my brother still. Let's go Jacob."
As Leandro walked away, Jacob followed and commented "Just a talk? Ha. I wonder what that talk is exactly."
Leandro turned to him sharply. "Triple jail time."
Jean watched the boys leave. There was something about Leandro that just didn't give way. When he was present it made her it hard for her to talk. She wanted to argue but couldn't. He was the dean, she found him nice and attractive. He was mean but he was caring. Others said he had a heart of stone but she didn't think it was true. The side of him she had seen at the club was what she liked to judge him with. He was sincere, honest and honourable. He had something in him that was rare. Something conservative. Something old school and something different she couldn't explain. There was something about him that made her overlook his threats and roughness. He left no room for arguments which made it hard to be around him.
Jean saw a group of girls approach her. One of them said "Hi. We are the Country Club committee of the school. Leandro asked us to show you the horse riding club. He said you can ride horses."
Jean nodded and went with them. The girls were in house of alpha so had to be high achievers Leandro didn't mind talking to her. She wished to tell Leandro she didn't like the strict meaningless hierarchy but maybe later. She knew to pick her battles. She knew what kind of school this was now. She had to join the crowd rather than questioning it. It was getting slightly easier to talk to Leandro now after the shock she had when he had talked to her about himself last night.
The girls were quite nice and did as she asked. It was almost robotic how they responded to her.
When she saw the section for horse riding she gasped "Wow. This is massive. I didn't know this section existed. It is right behind the cycling track and no one showed me this place when I had a tour."
The girls smiled. One said "So you like it?"
Jean said "It feels like home."
There were many horses walking around freely as girls were standing around watching them. They walked to the sign up desk.
Jean said her name and asked to sign up. She filled in a form and handed it in.
The girls doing the signing up looked up to jean and smiled. One of them cleared her throat "We can sign you up as a judge for competitions since you tick boxes for previous experience and own a ranch. But you can't ride a horse. It's too risky with your medical conditions we see on this form."
Jean said "I am fine. I can ride horses."
One of them said "We can't enrol you... unless we get approval from the management."
Jean thought carefully "Is approval from the dean Ok?"
They nodded. One said "Yes. That would be enough."
Jean turned to the welcoming committee. "Can I go see the dean?"
The girls agreed. One said "Sure. He is at the boys's arena."
Jean asked "About that. What do they do there? Isn't that just for boys to go to? Would they let us in?"
One explained "Well... We can watch but can't take part in anything they do there. We have a girls' arena too. We do dance battles there... You will see later... The boys do battles in the boys' arena."
Jean asked "They do dance battles the boys' arena. Do they?"
One of the girls said "No. They cage fight. They stand in a circle. Then They challenge each other. It's a fight that doesn't end until someone forfeits. It's kind of a chance to show off their strengths. Each year group compete against each other. It's compulsory for all boys to take part. But based on size they make smaller circles for smaller kids where they challenge each other."
Jean couldn't believe it. "All boys do it?Surely my brother wont do it. I know he won't." She whispered to herself. She didn't like the sound of this battle at all.
As Jean entered the arena with the girls she looked for Leandro so she could ask for a note from him. She walked to the front of the stands. She watched him in a circle. Her brother was there too. She cringed as she watched Alfonso challenge her brother just when she arrived. She wanted to cover her face. She looked away "I can't watch this." She then heard Leandro shout "The wall enters. Make room for the wall."
One of the girls who was with her said "He looks unphased.... He doesn't seem worried. You think he would have his backside kicked?"
Jean closed her eyes "No. Alfonso will get his back side kicked. You can kick a wall but your bones can get crushed, not the wall... Or so they always said."
