22 Play it cool
Damian POV
I took a deep breath as I stood in front of the door. For a second, I closed my eyes to collect myself. Hopefully this really was a good idea. It was worth a try, even if I was anything but sure it would work.
Slowly, I pushed the door open. There she was, and it took a lot of effort to keep my face neutral. I didn't want her to see the anger I was feeling. I would have loved to let it out. But now was the time to play it cool.
"Hey Lucy." I said quietly because she hadn't seemed to notice me yet.
Her head turned in my direction. The look in her eyes changed from surprise, to embarrassment, to anger and then to caution in the blink of an eye.
"Get out!" she said.
"Is that any way to talk to me? I just wanted to see how you were. I heard what happened." I replied and pulled the chair that was against the wall over to the bed.
I saw that one of her legs was obviously broken as well as an arm. Somehow it was satisfying that she was getting at least a little pain back after all she had done in the past year.
"Why don't you go to jail and check on your precious Savannah?" she asked, her voice dripping with disgust.
"Well... she's not my Savannah. Whatever it was, it's been over for a while. The more I thought about it... It was probably just a sense of obligation to Will that made me act the way I did. I have to admit that you were right about everything concerning her.
But now you're here... hurt and I'm sorry. I can't believe I was so blind. Even though I have to admit that I expected to hear from you about the house. After all, you were so obsessed with it." I replied and placed my legs crossed over onto the bed.
"Well, as the lawyer said, I don't have the money. But that will change. I'm going to take everything from her. That was just the beginning." Lucy mumbled.
"Is that still the reason? You're so eager to get revenge for something that wasn't her fault? Man, and you almost killed yourself for it? I knew you weren't the brightest candle on the cake, but wow... I didn't think you were really that stupid." I laughed coldly.
"I... you... what are you saying?" she asked, her voice unsure.
"Come on... Playing dumb? Not with me, sweetheart. I know exactly what you did. Brave decision. Too bad it won't work. Next time make sure she's in the country before you try it. Oh and by the way. The color on the house was a nice touch. A bit dramatic for my taste." I replied.
"She wasn't.. Oh damn! You're saying it was all for nothing? So much work for nothing? But... I prepared everything so well! I can't have failed,' she muttered with a red face.
"What exactly was the plan? Were you going to die like your brother just to make Savannah pay? Did you just lie under the car, cut the brake cable and hope for the best?" I asked, leaning forward so that I was closer to her face.
Reluctantly, I brushed some hair from her forehead while looking deep into her eyes. Again, I had to fight with myself. I wanted to gag.
"All you had to do was ask for my help, Lucy darling... Maybe your dream would have come true..." I said softly as I tried to make my voice sound seductive.
"You mean... You would have helped me? I wouldn't have had to fake everything myself... You, no. I had to do it. Will would have wanted her to pay. He would have understood why I had to do it." she mumbled.
"What exactly did you have to do? You could have just walked... to me." I encouraged.
"I had to change the video... I had to break the brakes. You weren't there for me... You should have been there for me, not for her. You should be my boyfriend now. Everything went wrong," she cried, just clearly enough for the microphone under my jacket.
"Thank you, Lucy... Thank you for being honest with me for the first time." I said and showed her that I had recorded our entire conversation.
And not a minute later, the police came into the room. They had been waiting in the next room with Savannah, listening to and recording everything Lucy said. I was proud, my plan had worked. She had actually been stupid enough to give herself away.
I left the rest to the police officers. I walked out of the room with a big smirk on my face. Savvy was already waiting for me. She immediately threw her arms around my neck. I lifted her up so that she could wrap her legs around me. Savvy buried her face against my neck and sniffled in relief.
"I'm sorry I had to say all that. I hope you know I didn't mean it and that you can forgive me, Cariño. I had to do it because I love you and I wanted to protect you," I explained to her as I held her like this.
"I know, D... I know. And I didn't take it personally. So there's nothing to forgive. I'm so grateful for you and I love you too. Hopefully it's finally over now." she said softly before covering my face with kisses.
"It is, Savvy... it is. Now there's only the future to think about." I replied and then gave her a proper kiss.
