Chapter One//Memories

Kendall~
Ever since we were little, my brother and I would always stay up talking all night about random things.  We talked about my mom, my dad, everything varying from vacations to crushes.
Every night for as long as I can remember, when we heard the back door open at night, we'd scurry down the stairs eager to say hi to our mother.
After she quit her teaching job out of frustration and stress, she was out of work options, and was forced to take a job at mcdonald's to provide for us. She'd take late night shifts as well, sometimes my mom would bring home fries and maybe even a shake for us.
We'd always made sure no one could hear us as we ran down the stairs, so we wouldn't wake our dad.
After we ate , every night I would offer my mother my bed to sleep in.  She slept on the couch every night for a long time, I cant even remember a time when my parents slept in the same bed. It's been like this for as long as I can remember.  However, she'd always deny my offer and I'd always feel a tiny piece of guilt inside me, even though I knew somewhere inside that her sleeping on the couch wasn't my fault.
I'd reluctantly walked up the stairs as my mom went to lay on the couch. I always knew something wasn't right with my family, but what I didn't know was it was only going to get much worse.

Maya~
While I looked around my room into the darkness that had always made me feel uneasy, I heard the front door open.  I quickly looked to the right of me where my nightstand stood, and read on my iPad that it was 1 am.  As I turned my head back to focus on my bedroom door I heard footsteps walking up the stairs.  When the footsteps got loud enough to hear as bright as day I quickly grab the edges of my bedsheet covers and moved them so I could see who was coming.  Just then, the doorknob began to turn very slowly and soon revealed my father.
" Maya why aren't you asleep yet?," my father said
"I wanted to wait for you to come home so you could tell me all about your day!" I stated
Ever since I was little I would do this with both my parents.  Whenever my mother got home from running errands I would ask her how it went, and since my father worked late lunches and dinners he would come home after midnight. I always worried about my parents.
My father was always hesitant to go into his shared bedroom with my mother and would always try to avoid it by watching sports after work in the living room.
"Is your mother asleep?", he'd ask.
"Yeah she is, but Ryan had another bad dream so he went to sleep with mom," I said.
"Okay, I'm going to go watch soccer, want to come watch?" he said.
    "Sure!" I'd say.
My father was very lenient with me, I never really did anything bad cause I was always afraid of disappointing my parents.
They weren't strict, however my older sister Nicole always gave them an attitude and my younger brother Ryan relied on my parents too much.  So, I've always tried to be their one good child; their good luck charm. I'd hope I'd always stay that way, but nothing can stay the same forever.
