Chapter 57
"That's rough," Violet said, walking into my room.
"We'll have to make sure we're alone when I catch fire," I said.
"Easier said than done," she frowned.
"You know, I think my next tests are just surveillance," I mused.
"Probably... maybe some writing prompts or more questioning," Violet sighed, sitting on the empty bed next to mine. Someone had set up emerald sheets and a black comforter on my bed, and there was a picture of Pansy and I on the small little table.
"I bet Dumbledore sent that," Violet smiled.
"He probably did," I laughed.
"Hey, wanna verse me in MW3?" she asked with a dark smirk.
"In what?" I asked.
"Modern Warfare 3...you know Call of Duty...Xbox?" she asked with raised eyebrows.
"Oh...Muggle stuff," I scrunched up my nose.
"Forget about your death eater life and come have some fun," she laughed, dragging me out of the door. We walked down to the rec room and I fingered the ring Draco gave me. I really wanted to talk to him...I barely spoke to him this morning...I didn't get to say goodbye or even kiss him.
"You look guilty," Violet said.
I shrugged and she sat down on the couch.
"Oh, I didn't introduce you to everyone! You see the person muttering to herself? That's Adriatic Trelawney," she said. The woman would have been beautiful if she didn't look so...insane.
"Oh my God, Sybill Trelawney is my Divination professor! Are they related?" I asked.
"I believe so," she nodded.
"Sisters?"
"I think they're cousins?"
"Interesting..." I nodded.
"That man over there is Gilderoy Lockhart, you know the famous author? He came here when I was about twelve...something about a Hogwarts accident. Anyway, he's here because he has no recollection of anything he's done," Violet sighed.
"That couple over there were tortured so badly that they went mentally ill. They're nothing but basically lifeless shells," she said sadly.
"Who are they?" I asked.
"Alice and Frank Longbottom," she said and my eyebrows shot up. That's why Neville was so mad about the brains addled with magic joke! That's exactly what happened to his parents.
"Who tortured them?" I asked.
"Bellatrix Lestrange...you know her?" Violet asked.
"You could say that."
"What about Neville? I know he attends Hogwarts," Violet said.
"I hate Gryffindor's," I said and she laughed.
"Completely understandable," she nodded.
"What about that guy?" I asked.
"He claims he sees dead people. They figured he just had imaginary friends when he was a little boy, but they did some tests and found out that he was actually serious. He's our age now," she said, and I stared at him with interest. I wonder if he actually does see dead people. He had silvery hair and light eyes that were fixed on the doorway, slightly narrowed. His skin was naturally tan and he was admittedly gorgeous. As if he felt my gaze, his eyes moved over to me and we locked eyes. I couldn't look away; I didn't want to. I started seeing tunnel vision, and all of a sudden, there were other people in the room. They were...ghostly and slightly grey and blue. One of them was Alex. He stared at me with a half-smile on his lips and a relaxed posture. The next person I saw was Clementine, and Lamoure soon after. Then came Barty. I put my hands to my mouth and felt tears form in my eyes.
"Leah," Barty smiled.
"Barty...Alex," I whispered, tears slipping onto my cheeks.
"Baby," Clementine said and Lamoure took her hand.
"Can't forget me," Cedric smiled. I covered my eyes and shook my head, feeling sobs rake through my body. I felt a hand on my shoulder and snapped my head up to see Alex standing there. I went to put my hand over his, but it just went right through him.
"It isn't your fault you know," he said, his voice a whisper, yet it was so real.
"Yes it is," I whispered, blinking through my tears.
"I loved the funeral by the way," he smiled. I let out an audible sob and he took my hand...as best as a ghost could. If that's what he is.
"Don't' cry, Leah. We're all better off now; happier. We're always with you...I've been waiting to talk to you. I just needed a doorway and that boy opened it. You don't belong here Leah, and if I can do anything I'll help you out," he promised.
"We all will," they said and I looked at all of them.
"Leah, I hope you know I have forgiven you. I love you sweetheart," Barty smiled.
"Barty, I'm so sorry!" I said, choking on a sob.
"I know, it was probably rough since I'm your favorite," he teased and I rolled my eyes at him.
"Love you, Barty," I smiled.
"Love you too, my lady," he winked.
Alex moved forward and kissed me lightly and lovingly and I felt it. He pulled away and I blinked, bringing myself back to the room, no longer seeing the ghosts.
"Leah!" Violet shouted, shaking me. I glanced at her and then looked over at the boy again. I wasn't crying; hadn't been crying. Was it a vision he planted in my head?
"You zoned out," Violet said.
"I'm so sorry," I sighed.
"Anyway, I was saying that his name is Thane and he looks very interested in you...I say go for it," Violet laughed.
"Oh my God, here he comes," Violet whispered. I looked up to see Thane just behind me and a smirk on his lips.
"Hi," he said, his smirk growing.
"Hi," I said in a daze.
"May I sit?" he asked with a gentlemanly charm to him.
"Oh, sure," I said, moving over slightly.
"My names Thane," he said and I felt Violet's obvious shock that he was over here.
"I'm Leah," I said.
"I know who you are," he laughed.
"They pulled a Hunger Games theme around here, 'the girl on fire'," he teased.
"Hah, right," I nodded. What the fuck are the Hunger Games?
"You're also Leah Riddle, and that makes you famous," he rolled his eyes with a smile.
"Well since you know me so well, why don't you tell me something about you?" I challenged.
"I'm completely normal and sane," he chuckled.
"Well that must be a lie," I gestured to the room.
"Well, I am sane. I just have a gift, I guess you could say. I call it more of a curse, but it depends," he shrugged.
"For seeing dead people," I said bluntly.
"Obviously. Who was he by the way?" Thane asked.
"Who?" I frowned.
"The black haired boy that kissed you," he smirked and I blushed.
"So you saw that?" I asked.
"I also heard everything," he said and I nodded.
"Who kissed you?" Violet asked in bewilderment.
"It's complicated," I sighed.
"Wait...you made her see dead people?" Violet asked, and Thane's gaze moved to her. It was a little less friendly, but not quite mean, either.
"Yes," he said shortly. Violet glanced at me with slight fear and gave him an uneasy smile.
"So who was he?" Thane smirked at me.
"His name was Alex," I frowned.
"Boyfriend?" Thane asked, lounging back.
"Fiancée," I corrected.
"How old are you?" Violet gasped.
"I'm fifteen, but it was an arranged marriage."
"Hm, yet you had feelings for each other," Thane asked with a glint in his eyes.
"Not before he was dead. Well, we did date for like...two days. It's a shit show of a story with a lot of backstabbing and cheating. Then he was murdered and I realized I cared more than I should. It was terrible," I sighed.
"Huh...well let me explain how that worked," Thane said, sitting up and facing me.
"Every time I see someone who had unfinished business with the dead, a doorway appears. Sometimes people need closure, other times they needed to just say something they never did while they were alive. Whatever the circumstance is, a doorway appears and depending on the person, I open it. Once I open it, I can channel the person's energy and draw them into a world somewhere in between our world and theirs. That's what I did for you, but I can see and hear everything unlike the people around us," he explained.
"Huh," I muttered.
"So...will the doorway ever appear again?" I asked.
"It could, but other times, if a dead person wants to deliver a message to someone alive, I might dream about it. If I know the person, I pass on the message," he shrugged. I nodded and leaned back, sinking into the couch.
"So Alex might send you a message?" I asked.
"Sure, it's possible," Thane nodded.
"Wow..." I whispered.
"Leah, you've got a visitor," Nicole cleared her throat and I got the feeling she was standing there for a while. I turned around and saw Draco and Severus standing behind the couch. I gasped and shot to my feet, throwing my arms around Draco.
"I didn't get a chance to say goodbye!" I said.
"I'm so sorry," I winced. He wrapped his arms around my waist and Violet was openly gawking at us.
"It's okay, they sort of dragged you out," Draco chuckled.
"Hey, no physical contact!" Demetri barked and I turned around with a glare.
"You shut up!" I snapped and he stepped back. I turned back around and hugged him again.
"I'm gonna die," I groaned dramatically.
"I brought you something," Draco said, laughing at me.
"Oh did you?" I raised one eyebrow, pulling back. He held out a journal and it had my name in it in gold lettering. I knew what this meant; I could communicate with my Slytherin's. I wrapped my arms around Draco's neck and kissed him with a smile.
"Thank you," I said.
"Your welcome," he chuckled.
"It's just a journal," Violet looked confused and I shared a look with Draco.
"Right," I said and we smiled. Thane was raising his eyebrows at me and I gave him a small smile.
"Why are all the cute blondes attracted to you?" Violet complained.
"What?" I laughed.
"Well there's Thane, and now there's this kid," she raised one eyebrow.
"Excuse me, I'm sexy, not cute," Thane said coolly and I started laughing.
"Okay, well then if you're sexy...Draco what in the world would that make you?" I asked and he smirked.
"There isn't a word in this world good enough to describe me," he winked and I laughed again.
"Miss Riddle," Severus sighed, shaking his head.
"Really Severus, are you going to call me 'Miss Riddle'?" I asked.
"Leah," he emphasized, "how would you like to break this news to your father?"
"Wait, me? I'm not telling him!"
"Oh yes you are because there's no way that I am," he scoffed.
"Oh be a man!" I whined.
"I don't want to be a dead man, thank you," he drawled.
"He'll kill me! Besides, I can't go tell him, I'm here," I said smugly.
"But you'll be leaving in four days and then you can tell him," Severus said with a smug smirk.
"I'll die!" I protested.
"Hey, at least I can still talk to you," Thane chuckled and I glared at him.
"I do not find you funny," I said.
"Oh that glare is terrifying," he said sarcastically.
"Would you like me to fight you?" I asked sweetly.
"Bring it, sweetheart," he smirked.
"Sweetheart?" I raised my eyebrows.
He winked in response.
"Back off," Draco snapped.
"Draco it's fine, he's insane," I said and Thane chuckled darkly.
"So are you, girl on fire."
"That's right and I will not hesitate to set you on fire," I threatened.
"Go ahead, I'm already smokin'," he smirked.
"Sure you are," I rolled my eyes.
"I never thought I'd see you hanging out with insane people," Draco said with a grin.
"Hey, I am in-"
"No!" Thane snapped.
"What?" I asked in shock.
"Never admit your insane while on trial," he hissed.
"I was joking," I raised one eyebrow.
"It doesn't matter, Leah. They'll keep you here forever," Thane said bitterly.
"Okay, well do not admit that then," Draco said firmly. I sighed and turned my attention back to Severus.
"Severus, please tell father for me," I begged.
"Absolutely not," he shook his head.
"Draco, when you are ready to leave, come find me," he said, and then walked out.
"I can't tell him, I can't," I shook my head.
"Oh, it won't be too bad," Draco said unconvincingly.
"It will though! He'll be so angry I got myself into this mess."
"Leah, it's not like we didn't expect this," he teased.
"Shut up," I rolled my eyes.
"Anyway, this is Violet and this is Thane," I introduced.
"Hi," Violet smiled and Thane just stared at him.
"I'm not opening your doorway," he finally said.
"Oh hush, don't be mean," I scolded. Thane raised his eyebrows at me and then pulled me over.
"Alright, I'm so kicking your ass in MW3," he said and I scoffed.
"Bring it!"
***
"That's not fair!" I complained.
"Oh yes it is," Thane smirked.
"Leah, you suck," Draco laughed.
"He cheated!" I protested.
"I did no such thing," Thane said with false innocence.
"You jammed my remote! I can tell when magic is used!" I scowled.
"I can't even do wandless magic," Thane lied.
"This is so unfair," I glared.
"Like I said, your glare doesn't work on me," he smirked.
"Maybe I'll just set you on fire," I said, making a flame appear in my palm.
"I'm almost afraid," he chuckled.
"Put that out," Draco hissed.
"Oh, we love making the people here angry," Violet laughed.
"It's the most exciting part," I rolled my eyes.
"You've only been here a day," Draco laughed.
"Yet I'm already bored," I sighed dramatically.
"We were having such great fun before Draco showed up," Thane said wickedly and I narrowed my eyes.
"Shut up, Thane," I snapped.
"I'm just telling the truth," he smirked.
"Stop making trouble," I warned. Thane laughed at me and Draco was staring at me with an annoyed look. I knew he was not very fond of Thane, but I can't help that; I'm stuck here with him. I kissed Draco with a smile and both Violet and Thane gagged dramatically.
"Oh get a room," Violet said dramatically, covering her eyes in false horror.
"Hey Violet," I said sweetly.
"Yes?" she asked just as sweetly.
"Shut up," I smiled and she laughed.
"It's getting late, Leah love," Draco sighed.
"So let me guess, you're leaving and I won't see you until my four days are up?" I asked sadly.
"Don't worry, I'll see you in four days. Once Thursday rolls around everything will be back to normal," he smiled and I nodded.
"Alright, tell everyone, especially Pansy, that I say hello!" I sighed and he smiled.
"Alright Leah... I'll see you soon," he said, walking out. I stared at the door for a while and then Violet nudged me.
"He was cute," she smiled.
"Yes," I nodded.
"Oh yes, adorable," Thane rolled his eyes.
"You scared him off," I teased and he laughed.
"Well Leah, I'm off to go to sleep. Curfew is in two minutes," he smirked, nodding to me and then walking out. Violet and I shared a look before walking out as well. I was admittedly exhausted.
