Chapter 2: Training

(ABOVE ARE THE TERRITORIES! I MADE THEM!)

They padded toward one of the biggest trees Leaf had ever seen. It was only a few tree-lengths to the left from the camp. "This is the Big Oak. It is the biggest tree in the forest." Rabbit flickered his tail proudly at the tall oak. Rabbit then taught him how to climb, and soon they were at the very top branch. Leaf nearly gasped. A beautiful sun shone on a decent amount of territory. The territory was mostly like a meadow with a small forest, and a lake.  It stopped shining at a river splitting SunClan territory with some kind of dark land. In the dark land was another river splitting half of the dark territory. Rabbit sat besides him watching. "See the shine of the sun?" Leaf nodded. "Every part the sun shines on is SunClan territory." Rabbit pointed his muzzle toward the river. "That river is the border between SunClan, ShadeClan, and RoseClan. Never cross it." "Okay." They hopped off the branches, and Rabbit then led him toward a big lake. Once they got there, Leaf saw bright blue water and fish in it. "This is the Lake of Fish. This is where we get our water supply. We also hunt fish in this lake too." Lastly Rabbit led him toward a forest filled with birch treees, the only part of the territory with trees besides the Big Oak. "This is the Birch Forest. This is mostly where we come to hunt. There are mice, birds, squirrels, and rabbits." Leaf looked at it with awe. "That's it for today, Leaf. Tommorow I'll teach you how to hunt!" Leaf felt excitement fill his body! He felt like a new cat. Rabbit and Leaf entered camp. Leaf was ammediatly greeted by Moon. "Want to share a squirrel with me by the fresh-kill pile?" She asked, flickering her tail toward a pile filled with prey. "Sure!" Moon grabbed the squirrel, and they sat next to each other sharing. A brown and white tom came by. "Hello Leaf and Moon!" He meowed, sitting besides them and grabbing a small bird. He looked at Leaf. "I'm Sparrow the medicine cat apprentice." He added shyly. Leaf smiled. "Hi Sparrow!" That night they ate together. Moon showed Leaf all the dens, and explained all the ranks. After that Leaf got himself comfortable with Moon, and he fell asleep in the apprentices' den. Leaf woke up the next morning to find Moon gone. He padded out of the apprentices' den, and saw it was a little past dawn. "Leaf! Come on!" A voice came to the entrance of the camp, and he recognized his mentor, also the deputy Rabbit. Leaf quickly gulped down a rabbit, and togetherness him and Rabbit walked out of camp. They went to the Birch Forest. Rabbit got into a crouch. "This is the hunters crouch." Leaf copied. "Yes, just like that. Keep your tail down. Make sure it's high enough not to swish the leaves though." Leaf did as told, keeping his tail a little off the ground. "Now when you see your prey when they don't notice you, then you leap. Make sure you're paws are ready to hit the ground when you leap." He nodded to Leaf. Leaf took all this in his head. "See if you can smell any prey." Whispered Rabbit. Leaf sniffed. He ammediatly smelled mouse! Keeping his crouch, he crept slowly toward the smell. Leaf saw the mouse chewing on a small nut. It didn't notice him at all, and kept munching. Leaf took this chance and pounced. The mouse tried to scurry away, but it was too late. Leaf's paws landed squarely on the mouse, crushing it. Leaf looked at the dead mouse proudly, and Rabbit came from behind a bush. "Good job!" He praised. Later Leaf came back proudly with his mouse and two birds, while Rabbit had caught a plump rabbit big enough to feed three hungry cats. Leaf was proud of himself.
